Could it be that there is antipathy to the educated, articulate liberalism associated with the, often affluent but not always, middle-classes? So people look to a Redeemer who looks strong and fights in their corner and such is the savvy of the Donald.
He is saying F... the Political elite, all you need is a Tycoon leader and you can be as rich as me.

Patronising attitude of the political elite the rich getting richer, at the expense of the poor? resentment, Them and us? could have something to do with it!

Exactly, whitewave. A similar change is happening in most of the western world.
In Europe, Brexit plus France, Germany and Hungary, and others, to say nothing of Russia.
Why? That's the big question. I once read that political movements go in waves - from liberal to autocratic, and back again.
It takes many years for the average person to catch up.
I wasn't surprised that Trump won, half expecting it. Grateful that we're in the older generation now and were lucky enough to experience the postwar years when people cared about eachother.

I think really rose and ana you sort of miss the point. It isn't the question of refusing to accept the democratic process. The question we are trying to answer is why is the post war democratic liberalism contract being rejected and why is the voter turning to authoritarian reactionary politics with all that implies.

exactly, all democtratic votes have to be respected, whether you like them or not.Losing with good grace seems to be a thing of the past.

Trouble is that democracy for some is only applicable when it works for you, and completely inexplicable and probably inappropriate when it doesn't!! Perhaps certain white people shouldn't have been allowed to vote in the U.S? That should have solved the problem, but sadly not democratic however you look at it!!!

Brexit and sovereignty issues are nothing like voters in the US choosing Trump as President.

I have a copy of the i in front of me.
58% of whites voted for Trump; 37% for Clinton.
8% of African Americans voted for Trump; 88% for Clinton
29% of Latinos voted for Trump; 65% for Clinton
29% of Asians voted for Trump; 65% for Clinton.

I think the voters saw racism in Trump.

niggly - she wasn't asking again per se- just comparing the reasons for those who voted Brexit and those who voted for Trump.

Whether you want to see it or not, there are massive parralels between the two votes- and the whole wild world has seen this and is discussing it. As so often- perhaps sometimes it is difficult to see things when you are just too close.

I am fully aware that you don't give a monkey's about what the rest of the world sees or thinks.

dj, how many more times do people on here who voted for Brexit have to explain themselves? We have on threads going back four months with one explanation on top of another, (yawn!) Is it, in reality, the fact that you and others just will not accept our reasons no matter how much we explain again and again and again and yet again?!! If you want to know our reasons I suggest you re visit these threads and you will find your answer then perhaps you can stop saying that no one has given a valid reasons for their democratic vote which they are (and this bit may surprise you!) actually allowed to demonstrate without fear or favour from anyone.
