Re the polls - I think they may as well do away with polls, they have been so unpredictable lately - and that is their function - to predict.

If 7 out of 10 voted fir change how did she win the popular vote ?

Certainly wasn't surprised this morning, the people have spoken. 7 out of 10 Americans were not happy with the way there country was going.So they voted for change.Out of all the millions in America surely they could have found better candidates than them 2.

I have been watching interviews with the American voters on TV. I am amazed at how civilised the losers are. Boy could the British People learn something from them. The Americans appear to recognise the democratic process even if they don't like the result.

Dd1was in NY last week. Her connections are with bureaucrats and she said she feels we are coming to the end of an angry cycle and there is new feeling about. She said it is not going to be easy.

Best case scenario is that Trump gets well and truly bogged down in the complex system that is Washington.
Also. Easy to blithely say things like "i'll cut taxes" one minute and "I'll rebuild our infrastructure" the next. But as we know, rebuilding infrastructure is a series long, complex projects that take years to even get off the starting blocks, (lots of engineering design, planning etc has to take place) and if private finance was going to shell out to do it, that would have happened years ago.

To think we watched House of Cards and thought that was dystopian...

Happy Birthday Jane 10, my birthday too. I am sad for the world. I remember some years ago feeling really happy that my birthday commemorated the fall of the Berlin Wall, (Nov 9 1989), it would seem this birthday will commemorate far worse things.

Someone posted about waiting for the first murder as a result of this terrible result, well with a bit of luck it will be Trump. Also agree with Anya, I am out here staying in Cambodia for the winter as I have been for the 10 years and I have seen what devastation and povety a self obsessed, cruel, power and war hungry idiot can do. I. Also hope against hope that just maybe we will stay in EU because of this result. Do we want to cosy up to Trump and possibly Putin? Just saying

No we don't know what sort of president he will be (can take a good guess) but he's shown us what kind of person he is. No prejudgment there.

Aren't we getting a bit carried away - according to the posters on here there will be murder of ethnic minorities, children afraid to go to school, women losing their rights and he will start a nuclear war! Whilst Republicans have the majority in Congress, many of them did not want or support Trump - so he will not have free rein to do as he pleases. Unfortunately, white and black Americans have been killing each other for a long time, that won't change just because Trump is President. No I am not a Trump supporter but neither am I a Clinton supporter - I think she is devious and not to be trusted and I have heard her described by some Americans as a war monger.

The American people have decided, we should respect that. None of us can see into the future and he might turn out to be one of the best Presidents yet. To prejudge him, when your not even an American is, to me, a bit arrogant
