Trump. How could all those people vote for him?

They still might not vote him in as president.

I suppose one has to look upon the definitions of success and failure, and how it is perceived by others and/or oneself. I think it's important to understand the framework that such attributes are given.

Some people say Trump is not a good businessman. I've no idea, but when I read that I recalled this from I know not where: "Success is built upon a pile of failures". I keep saying that to Minibags as she is stressing about failing exams.

thatbags Sun 27-Nov-16 16:31:02

I think the American constitution allows for presidents to have business interests. What it prohibits is receipt of "emolument" from a foreign state without the permission of
Congress. The aim, I understand, is to prevent federal officials from being bought by hostile governments, not to force a businessman to give up his business interests if elected president.

And on The choice we face (What constitutes compromise? How is it possible to avoid it? Why should one not compromise?)

Another thing, how can Trump say he is avoiding conflict of interest by putting his businesses in a blind trust, run by his son, when he wants his son to be part of his team?
Trump had a meeting at Trump Towers with the Japanese prime minister. It was only when Japan released a picture of it that it was known that Trump's daughter and son in law were in the meeting.

Well he just settled that lawsuit. Yes, no admission of wrong-doing but we all know what a settlement means... hmm

Next election, we could have a Trump here. Scary thought.

This is much more worrying after Trump has been voted in. I wonder what he'll be told about it. All in China's mind, of course.

I've just read this, daphne.

We can but hope.

daphnedill Thu 17-Nov-16 21:46:14

No, dj, it was just some some sort of 'ordinary guy'. The fact that he was just ordinary was frightening.

durhamjen Thu 17-Nov-16 20:20:01

Who was it, daphne, leader of the KKK?

durhamjen Thu 17-Nov-16 20:18:58

This from the Human Rights Blog is quite uplifting.

Arrrrggghhh @ Sarah Palin. Is he going down the list of clown school alumni?

I was watching some interviews after the election and one person interviewed said that Trump's election would restore foreign countries' respect for America. This person said that other countries regarded Obama as a joke, but Trump would make America great again. WTF!!??

daphnedill Thu 17-Nov-16 19:49:29

Hmmm, suzied. The Americans could do worse than Clooney. At least he stood up to the Daily Mail and a bit of eye candy wouldn't go amiss after four years of Trump.

I seriously wonder what's wrong with American democracy when it comes to a choice between Clinton and Trump. I would have thought that they could have found somebody better out of a population of 300 million +.

JessM Thu 17-Nov-16 18:00:39

It is certainly a test of American democracy. All democracies have their flaws no doubt. But there has been no concerted attempt to fix some of the flaws in that of the USA.

durhamjen Thu 17-Nov-16 16:45:15

Trump's eldest son wants to go into politics. He is being given a job by Trump, not just his son-in-law.

Just seen on the news that Trump will be sending a lot more forces to Japan and paying the Japanese a lot more for it. Anyone any idea why? I thought he wanted to be friends with Putin and China, despite blaming China for the climate change farce that he thinks it is.

Elegran Thu 17-Nov-16 16:31:21

Let's hope that the checks and balances set up to curb extremism in a president work as they should - and as they worked to rein in Bush after 9/11. A good article on this at Way to stop Trump

gillybob Thu 17-Nov-16 11:39:16

Jalima - Kanye West thinks he's the Messiah, so President of US would be a massive step down for a man with an ego beyond compare. He's married to the an extremely substantial backside/bum/arse, call it what you will, it's an autonomous entity that's attached to a woman called Kim Kardashian

Fantastic description Terribull grin

I can't stand Carol Vorderman either Ana

AlieOxon Thu 17-Nov-16 11:33:35

apparently there is at least one law preventing him appointing close family....

suzied Thu 17-Nov-16 10:34:42

Bookies are offering odds on George Clooney being the next president.

whitewave Thu 17-Nov-16 10:30:48

I predicted that he would never get voted in, so I don't dare predict he won't last!!

JessM Thu 17-Nov-16 10:20:38

Trump has appointed his son in law to an important role and has asked for security clearance for two other close family members. This is what dictators do.
John Cary very forthright on climate change yesterday in big conference. I think Trump can expect massive climate change protests if he follows through on his ignorant remarks on the subject,
And in other news... there are rumours that the awful Sarah Palin (soccer mom extraordinare) is going to get a big job!
