Fidel Castro has died. 59 years in power

daphnedill Wed 30-Nov-16 10:41:39

You seem to be a socialist who doesn't tolerate other people's views, annie.

Communism doesn't necessarily imply driving people from their country, firing squads, internment camps (Guantanamo Bay is in Cuba, but isn't controlled by Cubans) and control of the media.

Have a good day!

How did a discussion about HMG's attitude to Castro become one about your beliefs Annie? I asked why you think HMG hasn't responded to the death of Castro and you tell me you are a socialist. How is that relevant? Could it be you know I am right and are trying to change the subject?

daphnedill Wed 30-Nov-16 10:34:33

In the UK, only a few hundred thousand voters' votes ever matter. Mine never has.

I doubt if there is a country in the world which has unlimited freedom of expression. The UK doesn't.

PS. North Korea calls itself a democracy. A democracy is a system of government which aims to rule for the benefit of all its citizens, as opposed to a privileged few. It doesn't necessarily mean that people get a say in how that system operates.

My socialism does not include driving thousands of people from their country, firing squads, interment camps , control of the media,

This is the difference between socialism and communism , and I Tricia am a socialist

trisher Wed 30-Nov-16 10:17:12

What other reason would you give Annie? Human rights? The Chinese, the Saudis and in the past Pinochet have all been entertained by HMG over the years so it isn't that. Oh I know it's those dangerous socialist ideas of free education and free health care they wouldn't want those spreading about would they?

Seems rather a large number of countries are in the US's pocket

World leaders responses to Castro's death. Ours isn't among them. Nothing to do with human rights just because we are in the US's pocket.

Rosesarered, you have caused me a panic attack grin

Jalima grin perhaps one or two may send a wreath? If so, hope it won't say 'from all of us on Gransnet' [hmm

Anniebach Tue 29-Nov-16 20:42:27

I thought campaigning was banned in Cuba m is this correct!

Jalima Tue 29-Nov-16 20:29:03

I would probably have voted for him if I hadn't managed to escape because I would be frightened not to in case I or a member of my family was killed.

That is their form of democracy but not mine.

Who is going to the funeral then? I mean, out of Gransnetters?

durhamjen Tue 29-Nov-16 20:26:29

Cuba is a democracy. They vote, and if the person they are voting for does not get 50% of the vote, they choose someone else to vote for.
It also has a written constitution, which is more than we have.
It's written into it that all residents have free healthcare and education.

Anniebach Tue 29-Nov-16 20:16:27

Thatcher was the choice of voters , it's called democracy Daphne , Castro was never voted into power , he was a dictator, end of

Jalima Tue 29-Nov-16 20:16:17

Ed Miliband and seven other Labour Shadow Cabinet ministers attended Thatcher's funeral. Did they represent you?

confused
British MPs attending the funeral of a British Prime Minister is slightly different to attending the funeral of a foreign dictator.

Jalima Tue 29-Nov-16 20:13:17

How do we know?

It is the percentage of the population killed, incarcerated, tortured, not the numbers as the population is tiny compared to that of Russia.

daphnedill Tue 29-Nov-16 19:57:06

Castro was never in the same league as Stalin or Kim Jong-un.

Anniebach Tue 29-Nov-16 19:55:20

Or Castro ?

daphnedill Tue 29-Nov-16 19:51:59

Pre-war Germany was not like North Korea. Hitler was able to succeed and hold power because he exploited people's prejudices. Don't forget that there were a considerable number of British who thought his 'disciplinary' measures were a positive force against 'liberal elitism'. Hitler was never a dictator in the way Stalin was or Kim Jong-un is.

Anniebach Tue 29-Nov-16 19:40:37

I am so cross, just read an email , Emily Thorberry will attend the funeral to represent the Labour Party, noooooo, she is representing Corbyn and those who praise the dictatorship, she is not representing me .

nigglynellie Tue 29-Nov-16 19:31:14

Obviously only for Aryans Jalima, but it worked with the masses who lapped it up oblivious to, or ignoring the sinister overtones that soon unfolded into the appalling disaster with which we are all familiar. Yes VW's as well as autobahns, no wonder the people after all the suffering and deprivation they'd endured through and after WW1 lapped it up. For the duration, so long as you clapped and cheered in the right place/time, wept, again appropriately, marched, joined in enthusiastically when commanded, all would be well! Such is the way of Dictators! Bit like North Korea really!!

Jalima Tue 29-Nov-16 18:17:31

And still driving Volkswagens on those autobahns.

Jalima Tue 29-Nov-16 18:16:33

Well, of course, Hitler started the production of The People's Car.

To provide the design for this “people's car,” Hitler called in the Austrian automotive engineer Ferdinand Porsche. In 1938, at a Nazi rally, the Fuhrer declared: “It is for the broad masses that this car has been built. Its purpose is to answer their transportation needs, and it is intended to give them joy.”

Presumably joy for Aryan people only.

daphnedill Tue 29-Nov-16 18:00:55

That sounds a bit like Adam in the Garden of Eden, niggly.
