I've just discovered Dan Jarvis MP.

daphnedill Mon 28-Nov-16 16:39:38

Do you mean the video? I despaired too, when I saw it. There's a whole collection of them.

Anya Mon 28-Nov-16 16:39:06

DD PC or not, I suspect you might be right.

Anya Mon 28-Nov-16 16:36:32

I despair ?

daphnedill Mon 28-Nov-16 16:22:37

What Dan Jarvis is up against in Barnsley...

Hmmmm...

daphnedill Mon 28-Nov-16 16:01:42

I think Jarvis needs a bit more political experience and I wonder if Corbyn will provide it. The other potential leader (or, at least, senior figure) is Keir Starmer. I think Starmer is brighter than Jarvis and a better strategist. I'd love to see him up against May at PMQs - maybe he could even wear his barrister's wig wink.

No need to accuse me of not understanding! I do understand that people are fearful, but I honestly think there's a great deal of paranoia. Many of the places which voted Leave, which people have said are full of 'fearful' people, have very low numbers of immigrants. Essex is one of those places. South Essex has been a hotbed of right-wing populism for decades, even voting for BNP councillors at one stage, but there aren't that many immigrants in Essex, especially in the coastal towns. There is no rational reason to be fearful.

I do understand people in old industrial towns, where small enclaves have been taken over by (mainly Asian) immigrants. I expect there's a certain amount of racism, but I can understand how people (especially the elderly) feel when a whole area no longer seems like home. I can also understand places like Boston in Lincolnshire, where the number of low-skilled agricultural jobs has meant a huge influx of Eastern European immigrants. The same thing happened in the past in towns such as Thetford, Hoddesdon and parts of Bedford (all in the East). Immigrants aren't actually taking jobs, because the locals weren't taking the jobs.

I'm going to very non-PC here and suggest it's a working class thing. Areas where there are much higher numbers of immigrants, but educated/professional immigrants (such as Cambridge and London), don't seem to have the same attitude. My suspicion is that immigrants are scapegoated for the woes of the working classes, who have been neglected by successive governments.

He was the poster boy on MN during the last leadership election and people were sorry he decided not to stand

Anya Mon 28-Nov-16 15:47:33

Interesting point Annie

Xenophobia means fear off strangers or 'foreigners' not hatred, though I think many use the word 'Islamophobia' incorrectly to indicate hatred of.

whitewave Mon 28-Nov-16 15:38:18

My mother has been talking about him as potential leader for a couple of years now. I haven't read too much about him to be honest. I know that he declined the leadership bid because of personal reasons, but that's it.

janeainsworth Mon 28-Nov-16 15:36:54

I've been impressed with Lisa Nandy MP

Anniebach Mon 28-Nov-16 15:12:00

Daphne, Jarvis was speaking of the Labour party countrywide , you just don't see to understand - people are fearful

Anniebach Mon 28-Nov-16 15:09:53

Daphne, try this - people fear more immigrants , fearful not racist. How is labour going to get their votes by saying 'nothing we can do about immigration you have the accept it and our great leader supports immigration, he will build thousands of houses and dozens of hospitals and schools, it will take years though , meanwhile you eill have to put up and shut up '

daphnedill Mon 28-Nov-16 14:49:22

All very well, but which immigration could the government curb?

Over half of immigration is from outside the EU - the government could cut it to zero, if it wanted to.

Rachel Reeves, who also represents a Northern constituency, was saying the same thing a few weeks ago.

Interestingly, only 0.1% of all new migrants go to Barnsley, the constituency Jarvis represents, so it's not likely to be true that 'immigrants are taking our jobs' nor is the existing culture being overwhelmed. Something else is behind their concern about immigration.

Anya Mon 28-Nov-16 14:48:46

No Annie hmm

Anniebach Mon 28-Nov-16 14:09:50

It is true, so true

petra Mon 28-Nov-16 13:53:21

In the Daily Mail today he said that Labour faces devistating loses if it doesn't face the UKIP threat and back curbs on immigration. He said: the ukip fox is In the labour henhouse.
Probably not true, though, it was in the DM smile

Anniebach Mon 28-Nov-16 09:28:24

You mean labour PM's leave the party Anya?

daphnedill Mon 28-Nov-16 09:14:19

He's an ex para and has been touted as a future Labour Party leader. He didn't stand last time for personal reasons. I think he had just got remarried after his first wife had died.

I've also been impressed with Debbie Abrahams. I know Momentum don't like her because she's a Fabian. Whenever I've heard her speak, she sounds as though she knows what she's talking about - well, she should do, because she's worked n youth training and healthcare.

Maggiemaybe Mon 28-Nov-16 09:13:36

TerriBull, I had a couple of pounds left in an online betting account blush when JC was elected, and splurged it on a 100 to 1 bet that Rachel Reeves would be the next PM.

Of course the rise of Theresa May has beggared that up for me, but I still think Rachel Reeves is one to watch.

Anya Mon 28-Nov-16 09:02:49

That the far left has taken over is obvious I agree Annie

But they have only taken over The Party, not the electorate. Luckily, even deselected MPs are free to stand under a different banner come the election, and hopefully many will.

Anniebach Mon 28-Nov-16 08:55:14

He will join Hilary Benn on the deselection list. McDonald was asked in an interview about this move by momentum to deselect Benn , he said leadership cannot interfere with local parties.

MP's may support Jarvis but the far left are now in control of the party .

TerriBull Mon 28-Nov-16 08:54:53

As well as him, I like Rachel Reeves.

Iam64 Mon 28-Nov-16 08:42:16

Yes, Dan Jarvis is a good Labour MP. There are some good younger women as well so maybe all is not lost.

Anya Mon 28-Nov-16 08:42:07

Just read the article about him in the Pie & Mash shop in the Times....you may have something there Bags - and he has that sort of 'lived-in' face', Man of the Peoplr look.

Anya Mon 28-Nov-16 08:36:55

Now of course I'm going to have to google him!
