Oh dj I saw this, this morning it is devastating. What is Hunt doing. Brexit seems to be taking up everyone's energies and eyes are definitely off balls.

NHS winter crisis looms
(439 Posts)The NHS is struggling and winter is setting in.
Jeremy Hunt is asking for "efficiency savings" - in other words he is making cuts when demand is rising steeply as a result of our aging population. This means that every year the NHS needs a lot more money, to just maintain their service.
Over the last 6 years Trusts have been heavily pressured by Jeremy Hunt to cut beds - "increase bed occupancy" - to become "more efficient". So there are fewer beds in the system to cope with the inevitable rise in winter admissions.
Social care budgets have been heavily cut in England so there is less of a safety net for frail people living at home - so more likely to end up in hospital.
Noro virus outbreaks in hospitals are already up on the last few years - and that tends to close whole wards.
Today I read that 7% that is one in 14 English people are waiting for non-routine operations. Suspect there aren't going to be many beds available for those on the lists. Longest waiting list for 9 years

And is this a taste of things to come - flu closing school in Manchester? if there is a flu epidemic things are going to get really nasty. Best advice is, if you haven't had a flu jab yet, get one. They're about a tenner in a pharmacy near you, if you're not entitled to a free one!

Labour needs to get off its collective backside and start shouting about the state of the NHS. If the Blessèd Jeremy can't be arsed then now's the time for someone else to show some leadership FFS.
Too true Anya. How much worse do things have to get? The NHS is rapidly being dismantled and replaced by profit making companies, the elderly are being neglected, food banks in every town, many unable to afford a place to live. What a divided dysfunctional society we have become, and yet people apparently ok with this as Tory party 17% ahead in polls.
There was a very detailed analysis of why the NHS is struggling and included some suggestions. I read it on Twitter but don't know how to copy it to here. I think the Kings Fund did it but I might be wrong.
Bottom line -increasing population, increasing percentage of elderly people, need to develop other forms of effective care. Privatisation not mentioned.
I'm waiting for the outburst, too, Anya. Did anybody see the midday BBC News? Apparently Jon Ashworth was talking about the crisis. He's only been Shadow Health Secretary since October, so I guess he's till finding his feet in that role, although he's been around for a while.
For god's sake, another excuse to get at Corbyn!
The Labour party and Corbyn have been shouting it from the rooftops for ages.
Nobody bloody well listens.

Clive Betts, Labour MP.
Meg Hillier, Labour MP.
Sarah Wollaston, Tory MP.
Will May take any notice? Will she heck.
Far too interested in Brexit to notice what's happening to health and social care.
To be fair to him, Corbyn has been active on Twitter today signposting followers to Ashworth's BBC and LBC interviews. If Corbyn has indeed been shouting it from the rooftops, he needs to replace his PR team, because they're not doing a good job. I walked past a Daily Mail in the news stands this morning and the headline was that the so-called winter crisis is 'spin'. The DM has over two million readers, compared with a few hundred thousand Labour Party members. Labour needs to get its message through to the majority. At the moment it isn't.
No, they won't take any notice, because the Conservatives will walk an election. Corbyn & Co need to realise that they won't win just by being right (or righteous). They need to up their political game fast.
How many of you have written to your MPs about it?
How many of you have joined your local KONP to keep our NHS public?
How many of you have checked on your local STP and found out which A&Es are up for closure in the next reorganisation that can be seen from space?
Where is Jeremy Hunt?
Isthis the one Jane10 or is there a newer one?

Well, what chance has the NHS if even you think like that, Daphne?
What are the Libdems doing about it?
That's strange, daphnedill. The front page of today's DM that I saw was all about Foreign Aid - no mention of the NHS.
The lib Dems are not the official, oposition party ,they have nine MP's
If as you claim Jen - no one listens - ask why , and no use blaming the media for not reporting him shouting from the roof tops, he will not give interviews
jawing on Twitter will not reach the majority of voters
It's not to do with voting, Annie. It doesn't matter who is the official opposition. By the time of the next election we won't have a recognisable NHS.
People get mobilised on twitter. How do you think Trump ended up being voted president?
* djen* you say that May is too busy with Brexit to care about health ..... well, yes, she probably is! That's why there is a Health Minister and dept to deal with it.The NHS has been 'in crisis' for quite a while, for all sorts of reasons, but mainly because there are too many people making claims on it.
Corbyn shouting anything from the rooftops won't make a blind bit of difference.
Jen Trump did countless tv appearances , and it does matter if the official oposition are useless . Accept it Jen, he is hopeless and I am not getting at him, just stating a fact.
"At the same hearing, the Health Secretary signalled that he would back tax rises for the NHS in the long-term. But Jeremy Hunt also urged young people to save now to pay for their old age.
Mr Hunt said increasing spending on health and social care was a "sensible choice” he would support, if the economy is strong enough. "We are going to have to find a way of devoting a greater share of our national resources into health and social care without doubt,” he said. "
At the Lords Committee on health and social care funding.
Note the sense of urgency. This was 13th December.
Maybe I made a mistake about which paper it was, Ana, but I definitely read it. I'm not going back to check - sorry! Annoyingly, papers often have different headlines in the paper and online versions.
In any case, most of the mainstream media and even posters here on GN deny that it's a funding problem and try to blame other factors or deny that it's a problem at all. That's the point I was really making.
Rubbish, roses. There are not too many people, there is too little money.
It's a political choice made by this government and the coalition.

Two people died on trolleys; a woman had a heart attack after waiting for 35 hours to be seen; a man had an aneurysm and couldn't be saved.
All this could be going on at an A&E near you.
Hope you don't need to use one, roses.
Oh! Just another chance to have a go at Corbyn!! And when was the last time I 'had a go' DJ? Please inform me if you find anything recent
I'm having a go at the whole useless lot of them. DD is spot on as, if he is indeed 'shouting it from the rooftops', then it's drifting away on the ether.
His PR team need to bring him down to earth and turn the volume up, because I'm simply not hearing it, nor from the response to my post, is anyone else. And Annie's right to pull you up,and remind you that the LibDems are not the party of opposition, and besides their 'leader' is a wet fish too. ???
For gods sake, another excuse to have a go at Corbyn
He's the gift that keeps on giving
We know al that DJ as we do watch the news. But didn't see any comment from the so-called opposition. Useless bunch of .....
