The cost of Brexit for us; the ordinary people

There have been headlines over the weekend, in response to the recent polling, on the lines of "Nobody voted for Brexit in order to become poorer" (though they were good at dsmissing warnings that they would as 'scaremongering') Richard Murphy takes us through 10 reasons why he thinks it is inevitable. If anyone has an authoritative source to counter his points I'd be happy to see it.

Fascinating. This is like watching a battle between the Daily Mail and The Guardian...

daphnedill Tue 03-Jan-17 09:21:42

I don't do tantrums and tears, roses.

I agree with you, ww. The 'Malthusian viewpoint' brought an ironic smile to my face.

whitewave Tue 03-Jan-17 09:20:11

My last comment on this subject(do I hear a hurrah?).

mair how concerned are you that Malthusian theory has been widely used to support facist theory?

grannypiper Tue 03-Jan-17 09:09:55

GracesGranmk2 What makes Mairs views on immigration extreme in your view ?

whitewave Tue 03-Jan-17 09:09:29

mair I have been watching your posts with some amusement, since your Malthusisasm post showed what a naughty rogue you are!!

To use Malthus to support your comment of banging down the hatches and an anti-immigration argument is indeed the very antithesis that Malthus theory is about, and to do so shows a lack of respect towards the grans on this site. But hey ho you are providing us with entertainment.

rosesarered Tue 03-Jan-17 09:06:37

I echo what you have just said POGS and it's quite obvious to all who read these pages that a trio of posters( I could name you, but you know who you are) have had their feathers well and truly ruffled by Mair and her logical and well put comments.
Bitchy little comments such as ' had a new dictionary for Christmas ' ( hmm, we could accuse one or two of that I think) show how desperation is setting in! Hilarious.
Now sad little emo faces are being employed.....what next, tantrums, tears?

Firecracker123 Tue 03-Jan-17 09:03:24

I think most personal insults have been aimed at Mair especially the Jo Cox one and troll remark. Some posters on here should be ashamed of themselves.

GracesGranMK2 Tue 03-Jan-17 08:14:55

Oh dear Mair - descent into personal insults means only one thing really doesn't it sad

Add to that your reticence to use the usual tools of debate - referencing and fact - including your suggestion that we find these facts for you, and all we have is the opinion of one person which, of course, you are entitled to. I did not think this was a few people out to coffee and hearing others opinions however, I thought it was a genuine debate about something that will affect all our lives. My mistake, obviously.

POGS Tue 03-Jan-17 01:17:52

I'm enjoying this.

Agree/disagree, like/dislike it makes no difference but at least Mair has put his/her (if we can still use those terms for heavens sake with political ruddy correctness these days ) opinions over in a way that challenges constructively and I personally have enjoyed reading his/her comments.

I think the post re his/her user name was diabolical as mentioned at the time but I note there was another 'implied' personal comment he/she is a 'troll' yesterday. Not good.

Mair Tue 03-Jan-17 00:11:55

Here I am challenging your views and your logic while not putting forward my own and yet you know what they are

I think its fairly clear from observing who you attack where your sympathies lie GG. I wouldn't describe your posts as 'challenging logic' either more endless demands for evidence (google is available to you)and unpleasant sneering at posters.

Perhaps I should have kept the Grumpy old bird award for you , but hey DD and Durham have shared it out now. tchgrin

My understanding is that bots are asexual.

bots ?? confused

durhamjen Mon 02-Jan-17 23:57:42

However, I'm sure we'll soon find out who he or she is.

durhamjen Mon 02-Jan-17 23:45:28

True republica supports capitalism.
Enza Ferreri has a very dubious facebook page called save the west - from Marxism and Islam, and shows the crusades as being against ISIS.
I think I'll stick with Fullfact, thank you very much, Mair.
By the way, there's only one person on here who has been so against Fullfact before.
He left.

GracesGranMK2 Mon 02-Jan-17 23:35:23

So many twists and turns Mair.

"... surveys regularly show that people consider immigration too high and want borders controlled , as does the Brexit vote."
Perhaps we could have some links to these surveys - how many 'people', what percentage, etc., etc. As for the referendum I keep being told that so many who voted 'leave' did not do so because of immigration but because of sovereignty, wanting the return of lost industries, etc. You seem to a special access into the reasoning behind the vote.

"We cannot be certain but I am pretty confident properly applied controls would!"
Well that's nice for you but it is not what I have heard from any party so far. They all seem to feel the need for immigration and the monitoring of boarders, which could have happened while we were in the EU, seems like a pat on the head in the direction of those who hold your sort of view as far as I can see.

"Your views are certainly not what you could call middle of the road.
Was that a typo GG or logical confusion again?"
No idea what you are talking about on this one.

"I would call my views moderate and I would call yours extreme."
How clever you are Mair. Here I am challenging your views and your logic while not putting forward my own and yet you know what they are.

Oh that finding the truth were so simple eh Durham?

Not such "full" facts.

Jalima Mon 02-Jan-17 23:03:36

lol

It makes no difference, it was probably a sexist question

durhamjen Mon 02-Jan-17 23:02:56

She hasn't complained about me calling her 'her', and she complains about most things I say.

Jalima Mon 02-Jan-17 22:59:42

Do we know that Mair is male then? (not that it makes any difference of course).
It's just that Mair is a female name.

GG
You have no way of knowing they reflect the views of the majority Mair and controlling borders would not necessarily make any difference to numbers;
Not so GG, surveys regularly show that people consider immigration too high and want borders controlled , as does the Brexit vote.

it might but we cannot be certain that it would.

We cannot be certain but I am pretty confident properly applied controls would!

Your views are certainly not what you could call middle of the road.
Was that a typo GG or logical confusion again?
I would call my views moderate and I would call yours extreme.
I will not presume to tell you what you would call your views! "Right" maybe? tchgrin

Mair Before my sister retired she was a social worker in Tower Hamlets. She tried many times to bring this subject ( TB in the Asian community) out in the open. She even tried to get a local campaign going to stop men spitting.
I'm sure some of you know how this went down, lead balloon doesn't come near.
