I don't think any of us had visions of that Mair! If we had, a lot of us would have said 'no thankyou'! For certain our parents would! Lets face it, which one of us could possibly have seen how everything during the next forty years would pan out. Which one of us can tell what the next forty years will bring? Good? Bad?!

I was aware that there was likely to be more of a bond with Europe when I voted in the 1975 referendum and I could only see that as a benefit then and I have not changed my mind. The UK has benefitted with many of the laws and regulations which are common now across Europe. I dread to think what will happen to UK workers when many of these regulations are abandoned as the likes of Gove, Boris etc want.

I can assure you Mair that it is a phrase I wouldn't use about anyone (except for one person completely unknown to you or anyone on this forum). It smacks of thuggery and violence and internet trolls.

In those pre internet days we were extremely naive.

Forty years ago it seemed such a good ideas and we were all full of hope and enthusiasm. We now know differently and that we should have listened to Tony Benn. I think we were also tricked by our own government of the day who, although they couldn't have forseen the fall of communism or the reunification of Germany, had a pretty good idea of what they hoped the end game would be. The Heath government also knew that trying to sell this particular dream would never have been accepted by the British people at this time, so a benign version was proposed and voted upon which we accepted, hook, line and sinker! A lot of us respected and believed our politicians in those days, poor fools that we were!!!

You are splitting hairs simply to try to justify your rudeness to me, which I suggest was based not on what I said but about whom I said it, namely Merkel.

I suggest that if Teresa May got "a kicking" at the next election you'd be delighted and wouldn't criticise anyone using those words. Its very mild language, especially when speaking of a politician!

By the way, Mair, it's not at all certain that Merkel (CDU/CSU) will lose the election. What is likely that she will lead a differently 'coloured' coalition. Germany's voting system means that there isn't a binary choice.

It's not particularly what you say, Mair, it's the way that you say it. 'Getting a kicking' is quite different from 'being kicked out'. As I am sure you know.

Very true Nigglynellie. We certainly were tricked by the EU, it was never sold to us as a wannabe unitary state, yet all along this was the plan, and by stealth it has clawed more and more control for itself.

I would be very happy for the EU to return to being a trade organisation which we thought we had voted for in the first place. Of course we were duped, and had we known then what we know now, we wouldn't have voted to stay in the first place! However, if we really could have the relationship we thought we had I would certainly vote to be part of that.
