The cost of Brexit for us; the ordinary people

There have been headlines over the weekend, in response to the recent polling, on the lines of "Nobody voted for Brexit in order to become poorer" (though they were good at dsmissing warnings that they would as 'scaremongering') Richard Murphy takes us through 10 reasons why he thinks it is inevitable. If anyone has an authoritative source to counter his points I'd be happy to see it.

Hopefully Merkel will get the kicking she richly deserves,

What a charmer you are, Mair.

Mair Sun 01-Jan-17 12:43:15

That's pretty rude Maizie.

I dont think its unreasonable to say any politician deserves to be kicked out for bad policies. Do you?

daphnedill Sun 01-Jan-17 12:54:01

In your opinion, Mair, which is all it is.

nigglynellie Sun 01-Jan-17 13:12:28

I would be very happy for the EU to return to being a trade organisation which we thought we had voted for in the first place. Of course we were duped, and had we known then what we know now, we wouldn't have voted to stay in the first place! However, if we really could have the relationship we thought we had I would certainly vote to be part of that.

Mair Sun 01-Jan-17 13:45:15

Very true Nigglynellie. We certainly were tricked by the EU, it was never sold to us as a wannabe unitary state, yet all along this was the plan, and by stealth it has clawed more and more control for itself.

MaizieD Sun 01-Jan-17 13:51:04

It's not particularly what you say, Mair, it's the way that you say it. 'Getting a kicking' is quite different from 'being kicked out'. As I am sure you know.

durhamjen Sun 01-Jan-17 13:54:03

I hope the EU uses some of the control you say it has and does something about this.

UKIP definitely costing us lots.

daphnedill Sun 01-Jan-17 14:01:19

I would still have voted to stay in 1975, even if I had had a crystal ball! grin wink

I was 20, studying foreign languages at university and hoped the world would become one big melting pot.

I remember all the fear mongers then, who claimed we wouldn't be able to eat British sausages. Last time I looked they're still on sale! And as for bendy bananas! grin grin

daphnedill Sun 01-Jan-17 14:05:14

By the way, Mair, it's not at all certain that Merkel (CDU/CSU) will lose the election. What is likely that she will lead a differently 'coloured' coalition. Germany's voting system means that there isn't a binary choice.

daphnedill Sun 01-Jan-17 14:10:12

dj, That link leads to 'Page not found'.

Mair Sun 01-Jan-17 14:10:17

Maizie
No its really not very different, and I hope that even if Merkel isnt 'kicked out' that she still at least 'gets a kicking' and loses most of her support.

You are splitting hairs simply to try to justify your rudeness to me, which I suggest was based not on what I said but about whom I said it, namely Merkel.

I suggest that if Teresa May got "a kicking" at the next election you'd be delighted and wouldn't criticise anyone using those words. Its very mild language, especially when speaking of a politician!

Mair Sun 01-Jan-17 14:11:29

Yes Daphne I agree. See my response to Maizie!

Mair Sun 01-Jan-17 14:14:52

I was 20, studying foreign languages at university and hoped the world would become one big melting pot.

LOL. Similar. I have now grown up and realise what a terrible ideal that was - Brave New World!grin

nigglynellie Sun 01-Jan-17 14:23:48

Forty years ago it seemed such a good ideas and we were all full of hope and enthusiasm. We now know differently and that we should have listened to Tony Benn. I think we were also tricked by our own government of the day who, although they couldn't have forseen the fall of communism or the reunification of Germany, had a pretty good idea of what they hoped the end game would be. The Heath government also knew that trying to sell this particular dream would never have been accepted by the British people at this time, so a benign version was proposed and voted upon which we accepted, hook, line and sinker! A lot of us respected and believed our politicians in those days, poor fools that we were!!!

Mair Sun 01-Jan-17 14:27:13

A lot of us respected and believed our politicians in those days, poor fools that we were!!!

In those pre internet days we were extremely naive.

MaizieD Sun 01-Jan-17 14:28:00

I can assure you Mair that it is a phrase I wouldn't use about anyone (except for one person completely unknown to you or anyone on this forum). It smacks of thuggery and violence and internet trolls.

daphnedill Sun 01-Jan-17 14:28:39

Is this link to the same story?

daphnedill Sun 01-Jan-17 14:31:29

You're contradicting yourself, Mair, and your attempt to ridicule me has failed dismally.

The claim was that people wouldn't have voted to stay in the Common Market in 1975. I would.

PS. Did you get a copy of the UKIP Troll handbook for Christmas?

daphnedill Sun 01-Jan-17 14:32:40

And did you choose the surname of Jo Cox's cowardly murderer as your username deliberately?

Mair Sun 01-Jan-17 14:36:00

Equally Maizie I wouldn't insult a poster by calling them, with heavy irony, a 'charmer'.

I think speaking bluntly about a politician is far less offensive.

Mair Sun 01-Jan-17 14:37:48

Daphne. I am not trying to ridicule you. I am simply saying that I too fell for the 'global melting pot' dream when young. Many young people do.

Welshwife Sun 01-Jan-17 14:41:04

I was aware that there was likely to be more of a bond with Europe when I voted in the 1975 referendum and I could only see that as a benefit then and I have not changed my mind. The UK has benefitted with many of the laws and regulations which are common now across Europe. I dread to think what will happen to UK workers when many of these regulations are abandoned as the likes of Gove, Boris etc want.

Mair Sun 01-Jan-17 14:42:24

Daphne
No its a Welsh name and the pronunciation is quite different. Nothing to do with Cox's killer!shock
(What a nasty idea that anyone would dliberately choose a murderers name)

Mair Sun 01-Jan-17 14:47:30

Welshwife
But you're not telling me when you voted in the 70s that you realised the EE had ambitions to become a unitary state?

I recall even in the 90s when there was easing of freedom of movement regulations we were assured that in reality the effects wouldd be very limited

nigglynellie Sun 01-Jan-17 15:13:41

I don't think any of us had visions of that Mair! If we had, a lot of us would have said 'no thankyou'! For certain our parents would! Lets face it, which one of us could possibly have seen how everything during the next forty years would pan out. Which one of us can tell what the next forty years will bring? Good? Bad?!
