There is an article in (that should not be named) today's paper monica that talks of the ultra right having taken over the twitter network. I wouldn't know not being a follower. I would guess that the political debate on there is very robust.
Quite interesting though and I would guess a topic for the grans in the near future about how the world order is changing.
I don't think the main point of nightowl's post is that there is nastiness per se, but that any attempt at real political discussion is consistently turned into a way of making personal attacks on Jeremy Corbyn. I certainly agree with that. I have stopped posting on these threads because I am so fed up with the lack of real political debate. I don't think Corbyn is perfect but I haven't seen any other viable alternative being proposed just the same negative things being repeated. It isn't nasty, it's just boring.
nightowl There are a huge range of threads on Gransnet and most of us, ignore some, merely follow others and participate actively in yet others. We all have our likes and dislikes.
I see very little nastiness on the political threads, heated debate, yes, some members with deeply entrenched views, yes, but if you want to see political nastiness go to almost any other mainstream political thread and what you read there, the insults, invective, personal attacks, makes us appear like a convocation of kittens playing with knitting wool.
I suspect that some members have perhaps not been in situations that involved robust arguments about views and opinions between people who are generally good colleagues/family and tend to see any strong exchange of opinions as a sign of personal animosity when it is nothing of the sort.(DH is one like that).
There has been no attack on posters only criticism of politicians, expected on a political thread surely, more so on a political thread which asks which politician is a hypocrite.
This thread is not about support or entertainment nightowl there are loads of threads for that on the forum.Neither is there much 'nastiness' compared to some political threads.
Had to trawl back a bit to see Maizie but found it, apologies, it was to nightowl and not you.
Bit puzzled by your post on 1st Jan naming me, roses as to my knowledge (and after a quick search) I haven't posted on this thread.
Yet another thread that started out with some interesting posts has been turned into a thread attacking Jeremy Corbyn, with a few diehard posters (myself included) feeling a need to try to put a different view. There are those who put well argued criticisms of Corbyn (which I respect - I don't think he's God), those who put the same old not-well-argued criticisms, those who just use the opportunity to make personal attacks on other posters, and generally a lot of unpleasantness. I think it's very sad that a bunch of older (mainly) women, with a lot of life experience between us, can generate such nastiness.
I'm happy to leave you to it. Thank goodness I am well enough to be able to do other things. If I were frail, or in poor health, I would certainly not be looking to gransnet for my support or entertainment. I'm off to muck out a horse; at least she makes sense.
You are right there, so much tosh out there, and gullible people suck it up.Better to stick to articles from a reputable source, and even then come at it with a questioning mind.
That is a matter you can raise as and when they are ever offered up Eloethan by a 'right winger' but if you wish to believe in the links provided without question then that is your prerogative.
I am coming at this with a serious point of view that a handful of posters really do believe some posters are to be considered knowledgeable and trust in what they write and the links they provide.
This is a bone of contention for me and has been for a while with the rise of utter b----y tosh , the anonymous ''experts' who are being 'touted' as worthy of listening to, who are they?
Each to his/her own but it has nothing to do with a posters politics it is a general problem that cannot be defined as belonging to the left or right of politics particularly .
Obviously Political Spin is alive and kicking but some sites/bloggers go beyond that at times and it is up to the individual I suppose to elect to believe them or not.
Whereas all the linked articles provided by right wing posters are absolutely neutral of course.
That's why I never read any of djens links..... just know they will turn out to be left wing publications or Socialist bloggers with an axe to grind.
Never called him an expert, POGS. It's called Skwalkbox because his name is S K Walker. If you remember that, you'll probably get the spelling right.
Lots of other experts; they don't all need to be, particularly as people don't like experts.
Flipping heck so this is the 'Expert/Guru' you put links up to, in this case Skwakbox, you would have us read , believe and take note of is it.
In his own words:-
'I’m in my 50s (don’t want to have to remember to update this on an annual basis!), male, married with grown-up kids, politically-engaged (member of the Labour and Co-operative Parties) and increasingly socialist as I see the world around me getting less just and more exploitative. I have a knack for analysis, or so I’m told.'
In that case I have as much faith in him as I do Tom Pride / Pride's Purge and The Canary blogs/sites you put links up to and others.
Post Truth/ Fake News / Political Spin you can see what danger lurks on social media. It could be true but personally I will take little regard in future other than to raise or ask for better information or challenge what is said.
If you can be bothered waiting POGS.... I couldn't care less what happens to him, but it sounds suspect.
POGS, like me you are going to have to wait until OLAF looks at the allegations.

It could be true rosesared but given the 'strength' of the claim and the desire to put a person in prison for 5 years it is only fair to ask for 'concrete evidence' one would think.
Sounds more like wild speculation masquerading as facts once again, and probably taken from some dodgy source POGS
interested to see what djen says though.....
' Last year '.
[so funny]
Not an 'Inquisition' at all. If a poster, such as yourself, provides links then it is not unreasonable to know to whom/what organisation we are being asked to read the words of to make an informed judgement surely. 'Fake News' is now a known fact and I don't think I am being over cautious. I did not agree nor disagree with your wanting Nigel Farage to spend 5 years in prison for fraud but I do want to be able to assess if this story and your link is built on a sound basis as it is pretty deflamatory isn't it, or don't you think so, I may be wrong.
12.36 post.
'I think I've asked you before, not sure, but is the link you have provided again to 'Skawkbox' (with a k )the same organisation as CNBC 'Squwakbox' (with a q)?'
If your links are not connected to CNBC who do you think is behind the links you put forward? -
I mentioned I agree with this comment made on the link you provided re Nigel Farage :-
'I’m confused. Where’s the proof that those emails relate to Farage?'
'Enjoyed many of your articles, but the evidence for this one seems to be missing. I see no reference to Farage in the documents you provide. In fact, are you even sure they’re related to a dodgy citizenship request? My German is non-existent so I could be missing something.'
'The article claims, and I quote “The ongoing police case puts beyond doubt the question of whether Nigel Farage made an application for a German passport.” Well, no, it doesn’t. I read German and a) there is nothing in the documents cited in the article linking Farrago to the case (indeed he is not mentioned at all) and b) in this most Europhile of countries, were this to be the case, it would be all over the German news. Which, believe me, it is not. All the two emails confirm is that a case was opened on the 30th September 2016 (which could actually be someone’s budgie being stolen), and that a query is being forwarded from the Press and PR department (which could also be about budgie rustling) to another division – PK24 – of the Hamburg police. You claim “The evidence for the content of the formal police complaint was in the conversations with the source. That can’t be rendered photographically and a condition of the conversation was anonymity for the source”. So, effectively, we have to take your word for it, and the documents you cited prove absolutely nothing whatsoever. Until you actually link the case number to a document with Farage’s name on it, I will feel free to ignore this . PS I am not a Kipper, but false news will do our cause in debunking UKIP no good whatsoever.'

Your later link said this in part:-
'The address belongs to a relative of Mr Farage’s wife, Kirsten. Don’t be confused if it comes up as the address of a school – it is the registered office address of a swimming school (the school and pool is at Sachsenweg 78 in Hamburg), registered to the address of the owner.'
So is the owner of the 'swimming school' 'swimming pool' without doubt a cousin of Mrs. Farage and now ' presumably ' implicated in the , as you imply, fraudulent application?.
That is definitely a point you have stated I am interested in understanding a little better.
Have I missed your replies, apologies if I have.
What is it not an answer to?
Is this an inquisition?
You'll have to ask your question again if that wasn't what you asked. Last year is too long ago to remember anything else. I am sure that's what you asked about.
Not an answer durhamjen.
If it's about skwawkbox, it's obviously a different one to the one you mentioned, POGS.
I think you could have found that out yourself instead of waiting for days.
