Anti-Trump Demonstration Today

Today, I participated in the Women's March to The American Embassy in London in protest against Trump's attitude to women and to his proposed plans.
There were thousands of woman( and some men, babies in slings and pushchairs, marching children, even dogs on leads), all using the only method left to us to express our solidarity. It was cold, the sun shone, drums beat and people chatted, shared case histories, laughed, sand, cheered to each helicopter flying overhead and marched until they could move no more.
The police were wonderful and it was peaceful all round, full of goodwill.
There were hundreds of pink pussycat hats, original handmade placards and slogans, even a huge vagina in cardboard. My favourite was a placard( in background of one of the photos attached) stating thus:
A woman needs Trump
Like a fish needs climate change.

My DH, who was with me, thinks that the march, especially one in a foreign country, is a feel good moment for the participants but otherwise useless. Trump is now president and such marches, DH thinks, will do nothing to change the course of his government.

I disagree.

What do Gransnetters think?

Anya Sat 21-Jan-17 22:56:09

Bloody hell! Who is this person? Yuk!

stillaliveandkicking Sat 21-Jan-17 22:50:30

On this very medium there was someone who said that she was all for it if postmen wore shorts as long as they had a nice pair of legs. Bloody hypocritical don't you think?

stillaliveandkicking Sat 21-Jan-17 22:43:16

what cause? what did he really do? he did what most men do. its not exactly the vote is it? Im no apologist but go home and tell your husband or boyfriend not to put his hand in your lap inappropriately, tell them not to speak to you in a "bloke" manner and guess what, not many women will have a partner.

Do things from birth then, teach your boys not to do this then.

I was very hopeful when I saw the amount of people getting out to make their point

Morgana Sat 21-Jan-17 22:35:22

For me the exciting thing about all these demos was the idea that women in many places on earth are voicing their opinions and standing up together. I am hopeful that this will promote our cause for real equality. Anyone else hopeful?

stillaliveandkicking Sat 21-Jan-17 22:21:31

Apologies Marmark you are 100 percent right! we did get a bit carried away and rather insulting to each other on this thread. Debating does tend to do that and I for one am very sorry if I got carried away.

Im also a fecking human too and not mother theresa grin and do swear, do get heated when i have a point! so stick that up your pipe and smoke it!

Dyffryn Sat 21-Jan-17 22:20:56

I am sorry if I called you a troll aliveandkicking. Gransnet is not for me. I think I will stick to bring a grandma and try and forget all what is bad with the world.

Ana Sat 21-Jan-17 22:19:57

I'm always amazed at how the aggressive and sarky regular posters seem to disappear during times like these! grin

(then it'll be back to complaining about being disagreed with again when it's all died down...hmm)

Jane10 Sat 21-Jan-17 22:19:47

Just a side issue, but I was interested to hear that Trump would have made more money just leaving the money he inherited from his father in the bank. His own business activities have led to a reduction in what he might have had. Not exactly a genius in business.

Marmark1 Sat 21-Jan-17 22:13:39

What a bleddy sample some of you are.Your actually parents and grandparents?Thank Christ there's not a lot like you.Ignorant arrogant selfish gits, you should be ashamed.Healthy debate is one thing, brow beating name calling tantrums because someone disagrees? Disgusting.
I'm not the cleverest or brightest person here, but I bet I'm nicer and have more REAL friends than some of you bleddy shower.

Jane10 Sat 21-Jan-17 22:13:10

confused Que?

stillaliveandkicking Sat 21-Jan-17 22:09:49

What do you think the EU was about then?

Jane10 Sat 21-Jan-17 22:06:06

Excellent point about Nazi Germany Rinouchka.
If nothing else the worldwide anti Trump rallies send a message to him and to those who voted for him.

stillaliveandkicking Sat 21-Jan-17 22:04:58

Here we go again.. passive aggressive.
Honestly Blue I don't really care what you do or think. It's pretty annoying that you have to go to such lengths to defend yourself.

Rinouchka Sat 21-Jan-17 22:04:32

Please let us conduct this thread in the civilised way that the march was conducted today.
I don't agree with my own DH but we don't insult each other on so disagreeing!
Was just interested in reading your takes on marches.

BlueBelle Sat 21-Jan-17 22:03:10

I said you 'come across as' I didn't say 'you are' quite different statements

Whose asked gransnet to delete you ?? Umm hadn't thought of that

Rinouchka Sat 21-Jan-17 21:59:28

Actually, London is across the pond( ana the Atlantic Ocean) in answer to saak

Have just returned to read this thread but am suffering from poor internet connection so will be brief:

DH does have a point about the efficacity of any post-event demonstration but if we accept his viewpoint, then any protest against any possible unacceptable actions or policies is useless.
How can this be true?

-->Nixon said himself that the anti-Vietnam demonstrations prevented him from nuking Vietnam. I remember this quite well.
-->I demonstrated in Paris, May 1968 as a teenager( so did DH). The demos led to De Gaulle's resignation and enormous changes in the education system there.

-->What if massive marches had been organised to protest in 1930s Germany against Nazi laws? How effective might they have been in altering history?

Anniebach Sat 21-Jan-17 21:58:36

The marches will not change Trump's views on women or anything else, Trump is president but he is not the Republican Party . Americans love being loved

stillaliveandkicking Sat 21-Jan-17 21:55:45

Not sure why you can't allow a single person to have their own views without trying to ask in a passive aggressive manner for grans-net to delete me?

stillaliveandkicking Sat 21-Jan-17 21:53:17

I have a feeling that Trump will stay in office for a while. Im allowed to support him if I wish. Im neither arrogant nor ignorant as you say. Slander isn't a nice thing to do to people that happen to have a different point of view to you is it.

Ana Sat 21-Jan-17 21:52:56

Well, I gave the first response to the OP and it was the same as yours, Jalima. Trump, and most Americans, don't give a damn what we in the UK think.

And of course the attacks on Elegran are ridiculous - I think there will be mass deletions either very soon or overnight.

stillaliveandkicking Sat 21-Jan-17 21:51:06

Oh dear, here we go. It was one word, it wasn't an "attack" how dramatic is that.
I called her a dick and I'm sure she will get over it.

I like being on this forum so not looking to be outed by you thanks Elgran.

Other than that, Im good.

BlueBelle Sat 21-Jan-17 21:49:50

Funnily enough Saak ( wherever you come from) you come across as the perfect Trump supporter Rude arrogant and probably ignorant as to how to discuss anything that is not in agreement with your ideas

I doubt if any of us need to worry as I ll be very surprised if Trump is around for very long He ll have all sorts of activities to explain away ....that's if he's not bumped off when he rolls off putins bed no one with a decent bone in their body would vote for him

Jalima Sat 21-Jan-17 21:47:25

I read the OP and posted before reading the rest of the thread
shock

My view does not mean that I am a supporter of Trump - merely that I think these protests are probably futile.
He knows he has been elected despite his attitude to women.
Let's hope his own wife and daughters can keep him in check.

The attacks on Elegran are uncalled for and nasty; it is possible to- disagree with people's views without calling them names

Elegran Sat 21-Jan-17 21:47:09

Or perhaps YOU could go on something more suited to your taste? There are lots of forums where everyone slags off everyone else, that is the norm. It kills discussion, of course, because it is such fun for the combatants being abrasive that the emphasis moves from talking about things and ideas to scoring points against each other.
