I'm afraid that certain segments of our main stream press have been making up stories for many years. It's just the quantity now, and the fact that it can travel rapidly on platforms like Twitter. If someone has 1000 followers and they share something...

Paul Nuttall says he was at Hillsborough. Everybody else connected with Hillsborough doubts it, because he has never said so before, never helped, not even given as statement when they were asking everyone who was there to give statements.

For a while I didnt post much abut Trump becuase I couldn't work out fact from fiction.
Even now, as you say, if something is said often enough over the internet, there is a tendency to believe, by me and maybe others, that it has to be true.

It takes time I think to trust sources and where people get their sources.

Are we some people losing the ability to discern what is reliable information from a reputable source and what is "fake"? It seems that people are too ready to believe everything they read on the internet and I do not exclude myself, just as in the past "it was in the paper" had to mean something was true. Journalists have always shown instances of "not letting the facts get in the way of a good story" but now these things are "shared" and spread on social media with the result that if enough people say something, it "must be true".
The media have a responsibility not to disseminate lies/propaganda/fake news but we also need to refine our ability to sort the tosh from the facts.

But 'fake news' is a specific phenomenon. We've always had lies, misleading facts, spin, embellishment woven into and around events and th news stories based on them. Fake news is different in that the whole story is fake, there is not one grain of truth within it and it is got up to look real and genuine.

I think what we need to look at what would the good people of Stoke be getting if the voted for Nuttall. Would you wish that on them? Isn't a labour or liberal candidate a better bet? Rise above the leadership debate, and think what Stoke needs.

Yes I watched Seb Dance and Kate Hoey on the Daily Politics too, I rather liked the way Sir Nicholas Soames whilst being a Tory stood up for Kate Hoey's character and political career.

Seb Dance is of course the flavour of the month no doubt in 'some' circles as he is the Labour MEP who held up the piece of paper behind Farage when he was speaking in the EU Parliament saying 'He's lying to you'.

Hasn't Seb Dance called for Labours biggest Donor John Mills to be kicked out of the labour Party?

It will be interesting to see what the truth is behind the allegations he has made.

I wonder what he will do once his job is finished in the EU Parliament? Maybe he has friends in high places within Labour so perhaps he will be a candidate for any vacant constituency that might appear in London one day.

This thread began with a poll showing Paul Nuttall was 10% ahead of Labour. The poll was 182 people, done on facebook, and gave Ukip 35% and Labour 25%. So 64 votes for Ukip and 46 votes for Labour.
It was discussed in the Sun, Express, Breitbart, etc., as bad news for Labour.
It was actually run by Labour Leave paid for by John Mills. There is no indication that the poll was taken in Stoke Central, even.

Perhaps it might be worth watching the Daily Politics programme and listen to Kate Hoey speaking on the issue raised in your link to hear from the 'horses mouth'.
