Melania and equality
(361 Posts)Certain pictures and 'stories' about Donald and Melania Trump are appearing repeatedly on Twitter. It's interesting to compare interpretations.
This one, where Donald gets out of the limo and goes up the steps to meet the Obamas while Melania gets out of the far side of the vehicle and walks up by herself has provoked a lot of discussion reaction.
The most common interpretation is that Donald is a boor/ungentlemanly for not waiting for Melania and walking up the steps with her. I suspect this is based on the premise that he's a boor anyway and, besides, people hate him.
Another interpretation is that he is more of a gender egalitarian than we think because he was behaving just as he would have done if Melania were a man.
The latter interpretation made me wonder if Theresa May 'waits for' Philip May in similar circumstances or whether he just 'follows' in due course?
I am glad you spoke up, radical. And well said. There is always more than one interpretation of events. It's good to hear them all. Too often nowadays people are afraid to say what they really think because they are subjected to name-calling, disapproval and a 'ganging up' mentality from people who disagree.
It has been said repeatedly that the Brexit vote and the election of Trump happened because people felt their reasonable concerns were simply not being listened to. Some people are still not listening. Theresa May is one of those who is. Trump? I dunno, but the Democrats certainly weren't.
I just hope that none of you who are objecting to comments about Melania Trump read the Daily Mail.
For those who think he has only said one thing about women, check this site

And this one's a doozy
"Why do people think it’s egotistical of you to say you could’ve gotten with Lady Di?” Stern asked him. “You could’ve gotten her, right? You could’ve nailed her.”
“I think I could have,” Trump said"
Not a misogynist then?
"Who cares".
She looks happy enough to me!
I may be wrong but I thought she said she wanted to put an end to UK getting militarily involved to "remake sovereign countries in our own image".
And Theresa May has almost copied one of his speeches when she says she wants the UK to stay out of other countries battles and concentrate on looking after our own borders.
I couldn't agree with you more radicalnan .
.....and having read (I was bored) some of his recent speeches I have noticed that the media (as per usual) are picking pieces out and joining them to other pieces, changing the entire context of the original speech.
Good post Radicalnan it's certainly getting out of hand, especially Melania sniping.
FFS stop picking over people you don't know, the woman's clothes, smiles, prayers, leave them alone. I have seen the Queen looking pretty bored and cheesed off at times and she has decades of experience to fall back on........
It is hard enough in marriages and family relationships to know what is going on. What business is it of ours what their relationship is?
They must have had huge security concerns to worry about..........
President Trump speaks the language of the working classes, the forgotten people, the old men who remember when labour had jobs...we are on the cusp of something new in the world and there is an expected clash of cultures, none of which is made better by people thinking that they know, what someone else is thinking.
The Clintons are a pair of stinkers, Obama bombed and droned people how family friendly do we think he is? His perfect family set up do we know that is real ? We don't.
What I believe is real, is that he was prepared to bully us prior to the referendum by saying, he would see to it that we were at 'the back of the queue' if we voted to leave. He was happy to interfere in our democracy when it suited him.
I don't know how Trump will pan out as a president, but plenty of other people whose business it is, think a change is needed and they made it.
If we continually rubbish everyone and pick over clothes and smiles and prayer faces, we are operating at the lowest level of intelligence possible and the fate of the world is worth a lot more than that.
As for Trump being a misogynist who says he is ? Madonna who has been flaunting her own tired pussy for money for as long as I care to remember............grrrrrrr what a start to the day this thread is.
People have complained about Melania being discussed as an adjunct to her husband.
To all intents and purposes that is all she is in the public domain. Presidents, who are expected to be men, are also expected to have wives who will act as hostess and be generally supportive of their husbands. Pretty or stylish is well regarded too. Some First Ladies – what a thoroughly silly expression that is – do rather more but that's not compulsory.

Well I dislike MT because she supported her husband in the racist lies and slurs about the place of Obsma's birth.
Am not sure about that Jalima but I will have my people call your people with the answer.
The thread has come full circle. It began was begun with a comparison of interpretations of the same happening. Two recent posts have done that too. See how easy it is?
I always have my lady-in-waiting standing by to receive such gifts. Surely it is something everyone does?
How long she has lived in America does make a difference in adjusting to customs
America is an amalgam of people from all over the world, that is why it has so many and varied customs.
I know people who left their countries generations ago but still carry out their social customs one of them being never going anywhere without bearing a gift (often food) - and if one is met on the 'front porch' so to speak, that is where one would hand it over.
Perhaps it was a nice box of
No, they were surprised at the fact that Michelle Obama, having been First Lady for eight years, didn't seem to know how to accept a gift graciously and it was quite awkward to watch.
Surely you didn't take Stansgran's joke about the queen's lady in waiting seriously...?
If people are surprised by such a trivial thing as a woman accepting a gift and not having a lady in waiting standing by , in all honesty, that is sad thatbags ,
Typically the DM are trying to make a big deal out of what they (the media) think is a bad choice of gift. Silly Billy's.
What would they expect TM to gift them? A new ipad and a carefully chosen handbag?
I had never heard of a Quaich before today and think that a Scottish friendship cup is an excellent choice of gift.
Who criticised Michelle, ab? Noticing someone having an awkward moment and being surprised by that, given her usual grace, is not criticism., it's noticing and being surprised. Are you saying one can't be surprised by something someone does whom one likes? and that one can't say so?
As the Quaich is an ancient Scottish artifact it will no doubt be welcomed by the President. The "box of cakes and sweet treats" are products from Checkers. No doubt Melania will pass them on to her "minions" if she doesn't want them herself.
if
And a quaich is the cup of friendship. When people don't 'get' really obvious stuff like this I begin to wonder of the obtuseness is deliberate.
No Ana, I thought the criticism of Michelle was unkind so just put forward what I saw as her side of the problem , she should have done the same as our dear queen my foot
A quaich is truly Scottish. So was Trump's mum. Quaichs have beauty, tradition and historic significance. Perfect gift.
