Melania and equality

Certain pictures and 'stories' about Donald and Melania Trump are appearing repeatedly on Twitter. It's interesting to compare interpretations.

This one, where Donald gets out of the limo and goes up the steps to meet the Obamas while Melania gets out of the far side of the vehicle and walks up by herself has provoked a lot of discussion reaction.

The most common interpretation is that Donald is a boor/ungentlemanly for not waiting for Melania and walking up the steps with her. I suspect this is based on the premise that he's a boor anyway and, besides, people hate him.

Another interpretation is that he is more of a gender egalitarian than we think because he was behaving just as he would have done if Melania were a man.

The latter interpretation made me wonder if Theresa May 'waits for' Philip May in similar circumstances or whether he just 'follows' in due course?

A bit of compassion wouldn't go amiss I think.....

MaizieD Sat 28-Jan-17 19:35:13

I didn't think that the sainted Guardian went in for offensive cartoons.....but it obviously does.Don'te us all the guff about Gillray, very few will know that it's based on anything ,who see it.But it's alright you see, because it's a Tory MP and Donald Trump( the same sainted rules don't apply to them.)!

What on earth are you on about roses?

"The same posters who found Mair's comment about black skin 'disgusting' and 'deeply offensive' seem quite happy to make sexist comments about Melania Trump and question her intelligence (I think one poster even questioned her claim to have earned a degree at all)."

If it doesn't matter, why say that, Ana? Yes, you can be very intelligent without a degree, but why did she say she had one when she hadn't?

When I mentioned about Melania posing nude on Trump's plane, it wasn't to do with her posing nude, was it? It was to do with publicity. You can't pose nude in a magazine and then have people assuming you don't like publicity. The whole point of posing in Trump's plane in the nude was to court publicity. It was for a world-wide magazine. So now she's the president's wife, we aren't supposed to criticise her?

Oh yes, I forgot, it was compassion last year. Now it's divisive politics and post truth.

rosesarered Sat 28-Jan-17 19:29:27

Women putting other women down is a very strange thing IMHO.
Notice that it is only about women who have different politics/ are married to somebody with different politics/ are married to somebody that isn't liked/envy of their looks/ envy of their money. What other reasons could there possibly be, for dissing a woman like Melania Trump?

Ana Sat 28-Jan-17 19:26:26

x posts roses.

I think 'compassion' is a bit old-hat now though. 'Divisive politics' is the new buzz-phrase apparently.

Ana Sat 28-Jan-17 19:23:12

Does it really matter, though? Why are so many so keen to put her down?

It's hardly a crime to exaggerate one's qualifications when in the public eye. Or even on websites such as GN!

rosesarered Sat 28-Jan-17 19:19:54

We will be onto 'compassion' soon grin the new buzzword beloved by some.

rosesarered Sat 28-Jan-17 19:18:48

What does it matter? You can be very intelligent without a degree, there are all sorts of reasons not to have been able to attend a University, and many reasons to drop out.You need to be reasonably intelligent to even get as far as going to Uni!
Even if she was dim, so what,?

trisher Sat 28-Jan-17 19:09:52

Ana
Melania Trump and question her intelligence (I think one poster even questioned her claim to have earned a degree at all).
Check her bio here
www.biography.com/people/melania-trump-812016
Says Although she attended the University of Ljubljana, she dropped out after one year to pursue her modeling career. (Since 2006 she had previously claimed she had earned a degree in architecture and design from the university.)
So no degree after all!

Ana Sat 28-Jan-17 18:47:57

Still waiting, MaizieD.

rosesarered Sat 28-Jan-17 18:35:47

....what violent language?

rosesarered Sat 28-Jan-17 18:33:29

Ana Sat 28-Jan-17 18:29:29

Do remind us MaizieD what 'violent language' you're referring to.

MaizieD Sat 28-Jan-17 18:27:00

Well I never! All this sanctimony from the posters who defended the use of violent language.

MaizieD Sat 28-Jan-17 18:25:27

I've seen the Steve Bell cartoon several times on twitter in the past few days.

It's derived from a late 18th/early 19th century 'cartoon' (Gillray, I think) commenting on the marriage of the Duke of York and a German princess. I can't quite remember the context of it but no doubt it was something to do with a dubious commercial exchange. Though the position of the female's shoes is not the same as in the original. Which did make me blink...

I don't quite understand where the mysogyny comes from. It's message seems perfectly obvious.

Ana Sat 28-Jan-17 18:22:35

And as this thread has shown, there seem to be plenty on here who would find that cartoon funny.

The same posters who found Mair's comment about black skin 'disgusting' and 'deeply offensive' seem quite happy to make sexist comments about Melania Trump and question her intelligence (I think one poster even questioned her claim to have earned a degree at all).

Now we have nudge, nudge comments about nude photoshoots...and all from women who scream 'misogyny' at any journalist who dares to even comment on a women's clothes!

POGS Sat 28-Jan-17 18:11:25

If we are now onto the subject of nudity.

I raised this point on the Theresa May thread but I am not surprised it did not get a response .

Did anybody see the cartoon by the Guardian Cartoonist Steve Bell?

It is being called misogynist but I call it crude as well. It is a cartoon about Theresa May meeting Trump. It shows two pairs of feet, one pair a women's wearing leopard skin kitten heels, the other pair is males with orange tinted skin and bear foot , they are in bed in a compromising position. That is putting it politely, view it for yourselves it is one of the most offensive cartoons I think I have seen against politicians.

No doubt some people of a certain ilk will find it funny but if that is the level the Guardian has come to show their dislike of Theresa May and Trump then I do truly despair.

Take a look for yourselves!.

rosesarered Sat 28-Jan-17 18:06:00

Well done POGS for highlighting this fact, nice to see people standing up for fairness
( even if some tell them to let it drop!)

whitewave Sat 28-Jan-17 18:05:23

Sometimes a sense of humour helps. But we neither of us were dis cusing the contents of the deleted post which is what I thought should be dropped.

rosesarered Sat 28-Jan-17 18:04:34

Let us see if GNHQ reinstate the post by Mair because it certainly should be.It is not racist in any way.

POGS Sat 28-Jan-17 17:50:55

grin "oh pogs! That is a delightful post."

Thank you but I wasn't the one who professed " I know when to let things drop." was I!

You asked a question I gave you a reply , plain and simple whitewave.

Ana Sat 28-Jan-17 17:42:13

ofgs

MaizieD Sat 28-Jan-17 17:39:07

Nothing wrong with nude photoshoots, jen wink

Ana Sat 28-Jan-17 17:02:51

This thread is getting worse...
