On MN this technique is known as 'whataboutery' and is used in general by posters who cannot or do not want to address the actual issues bring debated and hope to derail the thread. It is well used on GN by a certain group of posters

In my view Steve Bannon is the one who should receive much closer attention. Apparently he is the closest to Trump and is the driver for all Trumps actions. The biggest worry as far as the rest of the world is concerned is the k owledge that Bannons belief that war is inevitable and indeed desirable as he sees war as the opportunity to change the world order to Americas advantage. He has written that war in the South China seas is desirable as is it inevitable in the Middle East.

WW did you see Gove being interviewed today. I feel he is a better journalist than politician. If you did (I am sorry this is a bit circuitous) he was talking about someone, and I think it was Steve Bannon, describing himself as being like a Thomas Cromwell to Trump. When the interviewer said that would make Trump a king Gove didn't gainsay him. The others round the table looked as if their jaws would hit the floor as they suddenly realised how Trump sees things. They did comment that if this was true he was more like Henry VIII than Elizabeth II. (I should have been listening more carefully - sorry)

It was just an aside and, as Rinouchka pointed out, look how Cromwell ended up. However, Henry VIII carried on being King for another seven years after he beheaded Cromwell

I have heard over the past few days justification of Trump's visit by people saying that we didn't object when the Chinese prime minister came. We did. There were massive crowds. People just have selective memories.
I'm not sure that posters said we didn't object or had forgotten that, just that the Chinese and others (eg Ceaușescu) came on State Visits and HM had to get on with it and keep smiling (that smile reserved for those occasions).
It's diplomacy, like it or not. Although why we had to be diplomatic towards Ceaușescu I don't know.

I would rather they came for a State Visit than we threatened war on them in the South China sea like Bannon is doing.

However, Henry V111th always regretted beheading Cromwell. A lesson there maybe?!!
