Why has this thread been diverted to a discussion on film directors? It's off topic. We are discussing David Beckham, or so I thought...

Do you really think AB he isn't one of our greatest film directors? Who do you think is? And of course you need a book/script to make a film but obviously you need a director and I've seen some great books completely mangled by poor directors and insubstantial books made great by a talented script writer and director. I can't imagine for one minute why roses made the point that KL hadn't written the films he directed unless she really didn't understand that that is the norm. Is your real problem with KL that he is a JC supporter and so you can't see beyond that to give him the credit for a life time's work that has included some amazing films?

Ana, I so enjoyed David Lean films , with the exception of Dr Zhivargo, all that snow ! But they came from books which had been read almost world wide, without those books no great films

No, he didn't write the books, he did bring them to a wider audience it's true, But the actual writing ( and the message) was actually the property of the author.
I am not criticising any film director ( I would not call Loach one of our greatest btw)
But this thread is not about him, and I can't understand why we are still talking about him....except to say he is not a hero ( which I believe is what started this ).

I, Daniel Blake, wasn't based on a book. The script was written by Paul Laverty, and although I do appreciate that a director's work is significant the film isn't just 'Ken Loach's.

Yet he didn't win best director or best film. he won best British film but how many are made in a year. He has never won on Oscar , so yes a good director but not world class.

The writer is so important because there is the birth of the film . Think,of the films which would never been made if there had been no book or script. Passage to India, To Kill A Mocking Bird, The Birds, the list is endless and most started with the writer

<sigh> have you any idea at all about how many people see a film as opposed to how many would read the book it is based on? And have you any idea at all about the huge difference a particular director makes to a film? Have you never seen two versions of the same book filmed by two different directors and seen what a huge difference that makes? And as for roses comment that Loach didn't write the books his films were based on? Seriously? Honestly, in order to criticise someone who is one of our greatest film directors,but is left wing, you are willing to demonstrate such a complete lack of understanding of the role of a director?

But isn't that down to the writer, rather than the director?

Everyone and celebrities in particular should be aware that when they commit things to a computer and send them out they are immediately insecure and liable to be read by others. It happened, nobody is "injured". A rich young man feels cheated because he hasn't got a knighthood. I'm sure if he finds the right person and is willing to grease the wheels a bit he will get one.
rosesarered of course directors don't write the scripts and his films brought the stories to a wider public.
There may always be an underclass but the way that group of people is treated and who is included in that class varies considerably. But pointing out the inadequacies of a government of any political persuasion is what creative people do.
