Has his halo slipped?

Is he really just the same as some of those other overpaid, rich celebrities who "do charity" on one hand and then take it directly away with the other by not paying his fair share of taxes?

I always thought that DB was one of the good guys and I am truly disappointed with what I have learned in the last few days.

Some ( a lot?) of Loaches work was written by others , Kes, ( A Kestrel For A Knave, by ? Was it Keith Waterhouse? So you could say that others had brought social deprivation to the public attention before he filmed it.Thet doesn't mean he isn't a good director of course. But remember that his social films cover every era, some when Labour was in government and some when the Conservatives were.
In other words, there will always be an 'underclass' that need help, no matter who is in charge.

Anniebach Tue 14-Feb-17 10:12:41

Trisher, how can you leave politics out of the work of a political activist? The film was political, his speech was political.

Carry on your chat with Eleothan , no fear of you going into shock .

The party this man chose to join is this mans political views, you cannot say of a member of the Tory party who makes a political speech - leave his/her politics out of it

Jalima Tue 14-Feb-17 10:11:04

But trisher did say Ken Loach was a hero - in her eyes, so therefore 'her hero'.
Others may consider David Beckham to be 'their hero'

Neither qualify as 'heroes' by my calculations so it is a personal opinion
I would choose Dr David Nott, he is a hero imo.

I can't see the problem myself

And, as pointed out on another thread today, some posts are tltr, particularly long lists.

smile
I hope YSWIM!

trisher Tue 14-Feb-17 10:03:15

It wasn't to taunt you Anniebach just to see if as usual you would focus on one small detail and ignore the bigger picture and you did.
As for wealth, he is probably comfortable but certainly not wealthy and nowhere near the amount he could have earned had he chosen to make more commercial films.
I asked you to leave politics out of it and you didn't so I replied to your post asking what you found offensive about his speech. The only thing appears to be that he isn't in government. I would argue anyway that the job of artists, filmmakers and other creative people is to point out the inadequacies of any government no matter what its political persuasion. If their chosen political party is one that will never hold power then perhaps that is an advantage they are more likely to see the flaws in those who do.
Eleothanif Anniebach was to post something that wasn't sneering and actual acknowledged any of my arguments I would probably suffer from shock. She regards me as someone who supports Jeremy Corbyn and therefore someone almost in league with the devil.

Anniebach Tue 14-Feb-17 08:51:27

Eleothan, do read the posts, Trisher claimed Loach as a hero.

She admitted she put that long ,list to taunt me .

She praises his political speech but tells me to leave politics out of the discussion

I acknowledge the writers and she was sarcastic.

Loach did not win best director or best film, I can't recall him winning a BAFTA before, never won an OSCAR

I said I enjoyed his film Kes, a list over fifty years of tv programmes just shows he has made tv programmes so must be a very wealthy man

My opinion is my opinion and it is not for you to tell me what I should or should not post .

I thought Trisher accusing me of being narrow minded was so funny

May I suggest you butt out and posts your opinions on the subject not on a poster

Eloethan Mon 13-Feb-17 23:43:04

anniebach You were recently bemoaning the fact that some Gransnetters are disrespectful and sneering of the opinions of others - and you complained that others had treated you in that way. But here you are again, referring sneeringly to "you hero" to trisher and being generally sarcastic, simplly because you don't agree with her. I I think it is debatable whether the entirety of Ken Loach's films - some of which have received awards - are appropriately described by you as "a list of nothing".

Trisher's opinion is her opinion and it is not for you to say it is wrong but only that you disagree with it.

Anniebach Mon 13-Feb-17 21:32:40

your opinion Trisher , wrong but you are entitled to it

trisher Mon 13-Feb-17 20:40:46

And Ken Loach has always acted Anniebach using his skills and talents to inform and to educate, and never selling out. But you seem unable to recognise or acknowledge anyone who doesn't support your narrow views. Such a pity.

Anniebach Mon 13-Feb-17 19:17:12

Nothing offensive about what he said but it was a political speech , and sorry but the film and his political doeech will not change a thing, unless you still believe Corbyn or the Respect party Suns the next election.

The only way to help people like Danial Blake is to stop believing it can be done by being in oposition , it cannot , speech after speech can be made - action speaks louder than words.

trisher Mon 13-Feb-17 18:49:49

I don't think he actually promoted any party last night Anniebach only spoke up for the poor and vulnerable who have suffered under this government. So perhaps if we have to discuss politics you could say what you find so offensive about that.

Anniebach Mon 13-Feb-17 18:42:48

But Trisher, ignore politics when your hero made a political speech last night and his film has been brought up quite a lot on political discussions on thus forum. So no sorry I will not move on from his political allegiance whilst he uses an evening celebrating arts and culture to make a political speech

trisher Mon 13-Feb-17 18:14:59

Try moving on from political parties Anniebach there's a whole world of arts and culture out there and discussing things without prejudgement because of who someone voted for is so much more interesting.
For example you picked on Z Cars, we could discuss how the BBC once nurtured and fostered talented individuals like Ken Loach and Mike Leigh through programmes like this , how it no longer does so and what effect that might have.

Anniebach Mon 13-Feb-17 16:13:28

Happy to amuse you Trisher, but I think you did it with pride for your hero.

So you agree with the politics of Respect Trisher, I assume you know the leader of Respect , George Galloway , campaigned with Farage during the Brexit campaign ?

No surprise, but to be fair Galloway, unlike his friend Corbyn, was honest about leaving the EU

Jalima Mon 13-Feb-17 15:27:49

hmm I still don't know

It's like the word 'Star' - at one time it meant a really well-known filmstar but then everyone well-known on tv or wherever was a 'star' so the more famous became 'superstars'.

Difficult.

I would call him a well-known and renowned film-maker
I would call David Beckham a world-famous ex-professional footballer, former England captain.

trisher Mon 13-Feb-17 15:14:09

As there appears to be no other term for people we admire Jalima I will stick to that term and as I have said I prefer someone whose achievements in their own field have been for something other than money.I have already said I regard the White Helmets as heroes but if we are looking for someone in our society I would much rather my DCs and DGCs looked up to someone like Ken Loach than someone like Beckham.
Anniebach your belittling is laughable and so predictable I included the TV list because I knew you would pick something out of it. Just wanted you to see that he has made far more than "a film".

Anniebach Mon 13-Feb-17 15:10:41

Off topic but there is a film released this week telling of the deaths of millions of Russians under Stalins communist rule ,they were starved to death, some ate their own babies, is the director a hero? Nop

Jalima Mon 13-Feb-17 15:02:34

It still doesn't make him a 'hero' though.
A film maker is not a hero.

well, he could be of course, had he shown outstanding courage such as that shown by doctors in Aleppo, the White Helmets, prisoners of war etc.

Anniebach Mon 13-Feb-17 15:01:30

Trisher, I did not make it personal, I have no time for those who cosy up to Galloway and I I thought Jeremy should be given the credit for his writing.

Oh Trisher, what a long list of nothing, you may care who was involved in z cars, I don't .

I have my God, you obviously have yours

trisher Mon 13-Feb-17 14:55:11

Oh Anniebach not political parties and who you know/knew again. Can you not accept anyone simply for the work they produce, the stance they have taken over social injustice and their adherence to matters of principle without making it personal?

We don't have to like someone to despise the fact that private emails were hacked and published after a blackmail attempt failed Day6.

I neither like nor dislike them, don't know them at all.

Beckham being laid bare ( more bare than he usually is given he likes posing in his grundies) is long overdue IMO

Well, that is what I referred to a 'Tall Poppy Syndrome' earlier on in the thread.
A speciality of the British when they think anyone gets too rich, too wellknown, too big for their football boots.

Build 'em up then knock 'em down and give them a kick whilst they're down there.

Anniebach Mon 13-Feb-17 13:12:21

Trisher, hardly a hero, he made a film but it was written by someone else , and sorry but I cannot respect anyone who joined George Gallaways Party . Did you enjoy his film about the communist who came to this country? Can't remember the name now

Kathy Come Home sas written over fifty years ago by Jeremy Stanford , he and his then wife Nell Dunn lived in s village near where I lived at the time. Even though he went to Eton etc he did have a social conscience

I think the Loach film I liked was Kes

Jalima Mon 13-Feb-17 13:09:49

Unless DB has aged very rapidly with all the worry about the emails Mawbroon, I think it was Ken Loach grin

Day6 Mon 13-Feb-17 12:57:53

Are we allowed to say we don't particularly like David Beckham and the Brand Beckham, consisting of VB and the children? I think the Beckham's typify everything that is wrong with modern society.

He was a footballer who is now past it so he models underpants and endorses products for shed loads of money.

When it became apparent she couldn't sing Posh Spice 'decided' she'd becime a designer, and with a coterie of fawning hangers-on in the right places, lo and behold she was flogging her stuff at astronomical prices quite soon afterwards.

Their children, at young ages decided they'd become models, photographers, singers, footballers, etc, etc, etc...In short they found careers in their chosen, high-profile, well paid spheres in their early teens, or younger. If it doesn't work out they gain easy access into something else high profile and lucrative.

The Beckham's PR team have gone into overdrive promoting this family at every turn. The Beckham parents have become celebrity " royalty " and of course the Knighthood was part of the plan.

No wonder he is peeved.

Of course the worship of celebrity isn't their fault, and it wasn't nice for Beckham to have his email account hacked. However, I am not surprised by the revelations, but I do feel there just might be a God given Golden balls, Mr Nice Guy®© tm etc, might have blown it.

I really am sick of the whole family and the way they've been able to manipulate the media for their own ends.

Beckham being laid bare ( more bare than he usually is given he likes posing in his grundies) is long overdue IMO.

Yes, Schadenfreude Central right here.

MawBroon Mon 13-Feb-17 12:44:27

Which was the one on the BAFTAS last night? grin

Jalima Mon 13-Feb-17 12:17:04

Apart from other more obvious differences between the two, before someone picks me up on that!
