Apologies if there is a new Trump thread, but the only one I could find had hit the magic 1000 posts mark.
Just seen this on Facebook. Makes excellent sense.

durhamjen Sun 16-Apr-17 20:04:24

And this is what he has tweeted about his tax returns today, as well as other things.

www.indy100.com/article/donald-trump-confused-twitter-rant-happy-easter-7686301

I still don't understand why he has so many folowers. I suppose it's a bit like Brexiteers not wanting to admit they were wrong.

varian Sun 16-Apr-17 17:39:36

There have been huge demonstrations in the US asking for Trump's tax returns, but his spokesperson, Kellyanne Conway still says "people don't care". They DO.

durhamjen Sun 16-Apr-17 17:34:35

Watching The Sum of all Fears at the moment. Not sure I should be.

whitewave Sun 16-Apr-17 13:11:55

Apparently it was MI6 who tipped off the CIA about Trump and Co, having contact with Russian Intelligence

Lewlew Sun 16-Apr-17 12:42:48

If he has borrowed a lot of money from Russian sources for his businesses over the years, especially since the crash in 2008, that might be why he will not release his tax returns. In the US you write off interest on business loans, so the sources would be on the supporting schedules attached to his returns.

Whilst it's not illegal to borrow money from Russian sources (no more than if from Chinese), it COULD affect the influence they'd have. He would not have borrowed by the Russian gov't, but from the oligarchs who wield much influence.

A writer in Forbes magazine said that was just silly... but with Trump's history of going bankrupt (the modern way to refinance), he may not have been able to borrow through regular channels. Money tightened up after the 2008 crash, especially with the collapse of Lehman Brothers.

But below is the article about the Russia issue.

www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/richard-dearlove-mi6-trump-russia-money-2008-financial-crisis-us-election-a7684341.html

The former head of MI6 has said Donald Trump borrowed money from Russia for his business during the 2008 financial crisis.

<snip>

Mr Dearlove alleged the money was used by Mr Trump to prop up his real estate empire, which was hit hard by the financial crisis. It is not illegal to borrow money from Russian entities but Mr Dearlove, who left government in 2004, did not provide any evidence to support his claim in the interview.

I suppose the Mexicans think it's a good thing, too. The diversion of World War 111 means that he hasn't built any wall.

durhamjen Sat 15-Apr-17 14:26:14

Another reason why trump wants a diversion.

Any Americans on here know about this group?

www.facebook.com/groups/814754475330754/?ref=group_cover

It appears to have been started by the Guardian.

It seems there's an election in Georgia which the Republicans could lose.

durhamjen Sat 15-Apr-17 14:13:58

130 demos about it today. That's why trump is pushing North Korea.

Ana Sat 15-Apr-17 14:13:35

You do flatter yourself! As for 'write things'...yes, links which probably come straight from your Inbox.

Strangely enough, I do post on threads other than News and Politics, but I wouldn't expect you to know that.

durhamjen Sat 15-Apr-17 14:12:18

About time this happened. I thought everyone in America had forgotten about trump's taxes.

durhamjen Sat 15-Apr-17 14:09:35

Pot kettle, Ana.
At least I write things, and don't just follow you around.

Ana Sat 15-Apr-17 13:43:05

I didn't criticise Guardian readers. I merely quoted what I remembered Private Eye calling the paper because at one time it was renowned for its typos.

You never miss the chance of a dig, do you durhamjen?

durhamjen Sat 15-Apr-17 13:38:32

www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/trump-military-strategy_us_58efe50ae4b0bb9638e2a291?section=us_politics

Does this mean the US military will not retaliate straight away if North Korea tests its weapons?

Trump is also going to give a speech at the NRA Association AGM at the end of the month. He obviously hopes to still be president then.

durhamjen Sat 15-Apr-17 13:31:54

Elegran, how do you know it was the auto-correct?
Petra was criticising Guardian readers, so Guardian readers can't read what they like without criticism, can they?
Ana joined in.

petra Sat 15-Apr-17 13:29:07

I have to laugh at durhamjens remark Re me not knowing who Gaudi is.
It's a standing joke in our family that we go to Barcelona so often. I've only been once this year so far but will be moving a friends boat to the marina there in a couple of months, and then we will visit with the family when we all go holiday to a resort near there.

Elegran Sat 15-Apr-17 13:27:50

Could anyone forget Trump? The choice of Moab as a name for the monster bomb is interesting. It is an acronym for Massive Ordinance Aerial Bomb or Mother Of All Bombs, but the word comes from Psalm 60. Unfortunately, Moab is the name of the foe that was to be totally annihilated and used as a despised footbath. I don't think that is quite what was meant.

"Thou hast given a banner to them that fear thee, that it may be displayed because of the truth. That thy beloved may be delivered; save with thy right hand, and hear me. God hath spoken in his holiness; I will rejoice, I will divide Shechem, and mete out the valley of Succoth. 7Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine; Ephraim also is the strength of mine head; Judah is my lawgiver; Moab is my washpot; over Edom will I cast out my shoe: Philistia, triumph thou because of me. Who will bring me into the strong city? who will lead me into Edom?"

Elegran Sat 15-Apr-17 13:13:24

Read whatever paper you like, dj. without criticism, but don't post sarcastically that you are not surprised at Petra's ignorance of the name of a famous architect when it was the auto-correct that typed his name instead of Guardian/Grauniad or whatever. That is an uncalled-for personal remark, and you have been on GN long enough to know not to do that.

AlieOxon Sat 15-Apr-17 13:10:57

Have we forgotten about trump?

durhamjen Sat 15-Apr-17 13:06:37

A new GN rule. Guardian readers on GN can get criticised, but not criticise those who criticise them?
I'll have to try and remember that - or not.

Elegran Sat 15-Apr-17 13:01:08

It suits Barcelona,

Galen Sat 15-Apr-17 12:58:08

Don't like his work. Prefer medieval cathedrals

Elegran Sat 15-Apr-17 12:10:26

I am surprised too - that you want a specific reply saying "Oh yes!, Him! Gaudi!" and assume that without it petra(and by extension everyone else) has never heard of him. Perhaps everyone was just ignoring both the typo and your reference to the architect?

durhamjen Fri 14-Apr-17 21:14:00

So you don't know who Gaudi is either.
Not surprised.

Ana Fri 14-Apr-17 21:07:27

It used to be the 'Grauniad' in Private Eye - wonder if it still is. May have to have a look.
