Apologies if there is a new Trump thread, but the only one I could find had hit the magic 1000 posts mark.
Just seen this on Facebook. Makes excellent sense.

My rule of thumb is to divide all Express headlines by 10. Sometimes difficult when it is just hyperbolic adjectives but it's a knack quickly learned grin

Several UK newspapers have been, quite knowingly, printing lies for years. So we should have had plenty of practice spotting them.
e.g. The Express seems to run a shock-horrow weather story very frequently. 2 days of sun is forecast and it's going to be a soaring/sizzling/heatwave etc.
And then there was our esteemed Foreign Secretary, when he was a newspaper journalist, making up stories about straight bananas. sad

I think sometimes when facts are presented in opposition to what people prefer to believe they are simply dismissed.

GracesGranMK2 Thu 23-Feb-17 16:08:52

I really don't think people will accept the twisting of truth and the throwing out of verbal emoticons in exchange for truth for long but the question is what damage this can do while we get to that point. It certainly hasn't just been the trampling trump doing it; we saw it on both sides in the referendum and people chose to believe obvious exaggerations and down-right lies so there is no reason to believe that those who want the 'ping' society in the US with everything solved or explained in an instant won't choose to go along with the ideas presented in this way.

It is up to us to look at reliable sources, fact check and question the verbal diarrhoea.

whitewave Thu 23-Feb-17 13:22:33

It isn't just trumpty it is his advisors as well in their publications like Brietbart.

Iam64 Thu 23-Feb-17 13:18:54

Roses, it's true we have always had to be well informed and we valuation information from the news media but Trump takes this to an unprecedented level. Fake news, alternative facts, give us a break.

daphnedill Thu 23-Feb-17 12:22:52

I don't agree. What we now have is on a completely different scale.

rosesarered Thu 23-Feb-17 12:15:21

Lies, half lies, half truths, being economical with the truth, post truth......all just the same things, and we have always had to be careful about what we believe, and to evaluate and analyse.

TriciaF Thu 23-Feb-17 11:39:42

re evaluating media reports, husband found this link:

It could be a spoof?

whitewave Thu 23-Feb-17 10:15:25

See trumpty dumpy is considering re-opening Guantanamo. Probably so he can set up all the torture he's so keen on. The first one I'd send there is Milo Yiannopolous. We certainly do not want him back here. Perhaps a touch of water boarding would knock some sense into him.

daphnedill Thu 23-Feb-17 10:06:21

I think it would be a start...of turning us into brainwashed zombies.

It's more important than ever that people learn to evaluate and analyse the information they're being fed.

rosesarered Thu 23-Feb-17 09:25:12

Good one Alie! grin

rosesarered Thu 23-Feb-17 09:24:21

Do we think that if the media stopped talking about 'post truth' as a buzzword, that would be a start?

AlieOxon Thu 23-Feb-17 09:21:46

"trumped up" - deliberately done or created to make someone appear to be guilty of a crime

Re Hilary Clinton accusations.....

GracesGranMK2 Thu 23-Feb-17 08:33:50

Three ways to tackle post-truth politics

35.00 The Apathy Triangle
Someone might not act because they believe what you’re asking for is too difficult, won’t matter, or it won’t work. So if we want to counterpost-truth politics, we need to break down the apathy triangle: the perception that it doesn't matter if we live in a post-truth world, it's too hard to fix, or that our solutions won't work.

I think, if we want a properly democratic society, we have to understand this.

When I was a small boy, the word trump referred to the breaking of wind. Parents called it 'a fart'. Things haven't changed much have they?

Ginny42 Wed 22-Feb-17 20:23:41

Yes, apparently Milania was mocked for saying the Lord's prayer at a meeting in Florida, for not having an American accent. I read this in Hansard in the debate re: State visit. I forget which MP reported it and said it was awful that she was being subjected to such racism. Well, I agree, but she's married to one of the biggest racists I've ever heard.

Welshwife Wed 22-Feb-17 20:08:14

Seems the wife starts some meetings with a prayer. I found it quite a revalation!

AlieOxon Wed 22-Feb-17 19:20:13

That's odd, I hadn't noticed trump being Christian at all...

Welshwife Wed 22-Feb-17 18:27:58

We have a family member who very seriously believes that Trump has been sent by God to save the world. She posts all sorts of articles from publications praising him and how Christian he is and we should not worry as it will all gradually become clear. She also posts anything she can find which is in anyway anti Muslim.
Does anyone have any knowledge about a publication - Jews-news - often the articles are from that. She also posts anything she comes across anti Obama - so much is his fault!

Norah Wed 22-Feb-17 18:00:23

Watching the news not involving brexit, Trump TV is fascinating.

Jalima Wed 22-Feb-17 11:47:13

Being POTUS is not the same as selecting an Apprentice and firing unsuitable candidates.

Elegran Wed 22-Feb-17 10:15:21

Hire and fire!

Judthepud2 Wed 22-Feb-17 10:11:45

No Alie, it is called being a dictator!

AlieOxon Wed 22-Feb-17 09:33:01

i guess it's easy if you are the big cheese, to just get rid of anyone who disagrees - and it won't matter what they feel about you. You don't have to be liked.

This isn't being a politician, though!
