I hate loathe and detest Tories and always have. But right now I don't see anybody else who is able to step in and do anything about them, and Theresa May is a thousand times better than Call Me Dave and his school pals. Labour just now is totally disorganised and useless. I'm in Scotland and I vote SNP - at least they stick together and sing from the same hymn sheet - just like Labour used to do.
If they got a really good strong good leader then Labour could get back up there and be an Opposition. Because whoever is in power, you need an Opposition to make them toe the line!

DJ, this doesn't look like a very compassionate decision by the govt. I agree. But then again, at a cost of £3bn, maybe it wasn't seen as the best way of spending the limited cash available to fund benefits? If Labour was in power there would be things they want to do but felt they couldn't afford - every govt. has to care about money as well as people.

This is Tory governance hitting the poor.

A court decided that some of those getting PIP were being treated unfairly. So, instead of agreeing with what the court said, the DWP has changed the rules so they do not pay out any more. It doesn't care about people, just money.

Hmm

So what happened in Copeland on Thursday durhamjen, did Adam Hills expand on the crass comment?

durhamjen Sat 25-Feb-17 00:13:51

Another Last Leg quote. The last time a Tory won Copeland was when Hitler was just a man with a moustache.

daphnedill Sat 25-Feb-17 00:08:38

You are right. What is known as the Overton Window has moved towards the right over the last 15 or so years.

It's why democracy is not an entirely satisfactory form of government (even if it did operate in the UK).

"Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch."

Fitzy54 Sat 25-Feb-17 00:01:36

I guess, DJ, it means that the people in at least one constituency (formerly safe Labour) think that Tory governance is better than anything Labour - or any other party - are offering. Maybe they are wrong, but it seems to be indicative of the general view at the moment. Surely substantial democratic support has a great deal to do with how the Tories govern?

durhamjen Sat 25-Feb-17 00:01:17

Do you hope that Copeland's hospital services are saved? Do you hope they do not close down the maternity services and the A&E?

durhamjen Fri 24-Feb-17 23:59:49

No but there is a lot of truth behind the comedy. Theresa May does target the poor. Can you prove otherwise?

rosesarered Fri 24-Feb-17 23:56:25

The Last Leg is political comedy, not Gospel.

durhamjen Fri 24-Feb-17 23:51:39

Snoopers charter is unlawful, says EU law.
Another government crisis.

durhamjen Fri 24-Feb-17 23:47:38

What's that to do with how the Tories govern, roses?
I hope, for their sakes, it means that the hospital services are saved.

rosesarered Fri 24-Feb-17 23:39:48

Losing Copeland is a major defeat for Labour.

durhamjen Fri 24-Feb-17 23:26:00

Theresa May; the Copeland byelection result shows that the Tories govern for everyone.
The Last Leg; a storm called Theresa, that only targets the poor.

I think you are agreeing that Le Pen is lying (?) and comparing this to Brexit lies? Clearly some on the Brexit side did lie. No argument from me there. I'm not convinced that many people believed the lies, but I really don't know. I would badge what we are being currently told more as optimistic speculation rather then lies, but I do see where you are coming from.

durhamjen Fri 24-Feb-17 19:42:21

It doesn't matter what you believe, fitzy. It's what Le Pen says and her followers believe.
Look at how much we were lied to over Brexit, and still are being.

Fitzy54 Fri 24-Feb-17 19:33:45

Le Pen is taliking rubbish. TM hasn't put in place "drastic limitations" on immigration and the idea of "smart protectionism" is a million miles away from anything she has proposed - quite the opposite.

durhamjen Fri 24-Feb-17 19:30:47

David Davis has said the UK relies on immigrants more than Brexiteers said.
He said it in a Times interview, so the plebs who don't read the Times can't read it - or those who do not want to make Murdoch richer than he is.

Marine le Pen says May is running policies that she wants to run.

politicalscrapbook.net/2017/02/far-right-leader-marine-le-pen-praises-theresa-may-she-is-running-policies-i-want-to-run/
I wonder what May thinks about that.

durhamjen Fri 24-Feb-17 18:53:13

The police do deal with hate crime when it is reported. But the point is that students are no longer wanting to come here because of hate crime. Immigrants no longer wish to come because of xenophobia, and who can blame them?

Fitzy54 Fri 24-Feb-17 18:50:23

DJ, apologies re paragraphs. I was a bit rushed! Will try again to find the foodbanks threads. Re hate crime, it's really an issue for the police isn't it?

durhamjen Fri 24-Feb-17 18:40:27

I can't believe you can't find a thread on foodbanks, fitzy. Just search in the search box. At least 150 came up when I searched.

durhamjen Fri 24-Feb-17 18:24:54

Next time, fitzy, can you put some paragraphs in, please. It's difficult to take all that stream of consciousness in.
