Labour now

What these people have to say about Labour as it is now struck cords with me.

Peter Hurst (@peterleohurst)
'Blue labour types' right about 1thing: many trad Labour voters more conservative than many third wayers/centrists care to acknowledge.
2. That conservatism with a small 'c' includes things like loving the royal family and being proud of being British. Social dems might not
3. win via 'riding the tiger of nationalism' but they wont win via the old 'New' Labour formulation either. The 5 million voters lost
4. During the years 1997-2010 are not going to return to a party that is, in effect, the lib dems in drag Iain. prospectmagazine.co.uk/magazine/labou…

I have noticed that Westminster does appear to believe that the only function of the north is to reliably vote Labour. And we don't now.
For as long as UKIP, the Labour left and fringe batshittery is the only alternative to Lab up here the Tories will clean up.
'Why would working class people vote Tory'. Because they cant vote Labour and the alternative is UKIP. In a nutshell.
One of the striking things about the left is this shock at working class tories, and working class people who dont want their revolution.

The photo is Hurst's Twitter profile. What it says seems well put too.

Me too Ginny, gets more depressing with each week that passes doesn't it?

If McClusky is voted back in Corbyn still has strong union support. I cannot see a way of getting shot of Corbyn-Momentum, he will not stand down because he wants to break the party and form a militant movement ,

I really fear for the party, have done since I realised Corbyn had fooled me and is still fooling some.

Anniebach Sat 18-Mar-17 10:23:44

I am listening to Gordon Brown now, great passion and no sheets of written notes

GracesGranMK2 Sat 18-Mar-17 10:29:04

Do try out 'in my opinion' AB. I felt Rebecca Long-Bailey did pretty well.

In my opinion she floundered on both Marr and Daily Politics . All she could advise was - look at a website

durhamjen Sat 18-Mar-17 12:54:24

I disagree, Annie. I think she did quite well on Daily Politics, considering she was sitting with three more experienced commentators, who all had laptops complete with figures in front of them.
I would have said look at a website in that situation.

On Andrew Marr she did well too, considering he kept interrupting her whenever she was trying to answer his questions.
She's only been a politician for nearly two years. I thought you would have more understanding for someone in her position.

rosesarered Sat 18-Mar-17 12:58:06

I thought she appeared weak and not very clued up.If she has only been a politician for two years she has no business being in the shadow cabinet. This shows that Corbyn is having to scrape the barrel.

GracesGranMK2 Sat 18-Mar-17 13:10:40

Just think - different people with different opinions - isn't that great.

durhamjen Sat 18-Mar-17 13:22:57

Keir Starmer has been a politician for the same length of time. Neither of them are at the bottom of the barrel. They are both extremely competent people who have had previous careers.

Fitzy54 Sat 18-Mar-17 13:24:31

i think she did well for a while but suffered in the end - she simply wasn't as well prepared as she needed to be. DJ I think you have criticised Marr in tha past. I have to say I'm a big fan of his interruptions - there is limited time and he does a pretty good job at forcing the politicians to answer the difficult questions rather than use up all the time in what can start to look like a party political broadcast! These people need to put under stress. As we saw, that's how they get found out.

durhamjen Sat 18-Mar-17 13:27:52

But he wasn't allowing her to answer the questions he had asked. He should at least do that. He interrupted far too soon in my opinion.

Jalima Sat 18-Mar-17 13:36:05

I am listening to Gordon Brown now, great passion and no sheets of written notes
He amazes me, he was never like that when he was in government, he always seemed to be dour and rather uninspiring.

Jalima Sat 18-Mar-17 13:38:09

The next election is in the bag for Theresa May, unless something catastrophic happens. Even if the tory party goes into further meltdown that we're seeing currently, I fear it will still be more appealing to the general public than the LP.
I'm not so sure, I think the Labour Party just need the right, inspiring leader who will appeal to the electorate without compromising their core principles.

Anniebach Sat 18-Mar-17 13:44:21

Hell bells, she is the shadow business secretary and didn't know a damn thing except what she kept repeating like a trained parrot , and she is McDonalds protege

Is it any wonder the labour front bench is such a weak oposition , most have only been MP's since 2015 , Corbyns yes people.

Anniebach Sat 18-Mar-17 13:47:03

Jalima , when he was in government we didn't see or hear him like that, we didn't hear his great sense of humour either , such a pity

Jalima Sat 18-Mar-17 13:47:06

They need to hurry up though!

petra Sat 18-Mar-17 14:05:30

I felt sorry for the poor misguided soul ( Rebecca long baily)
The term ' cannon fodder' springs to mind.

Fitzy54 Sat 18-Mar-17 16:39:16

I think they will need new policies not just a new leader. Even Milliband's policies were to far left for the electorate - the current list just won't get the votes.

rosesarered Sat 18-Mar-17 16:41:38

You would think they would realise that by now Fitzy but it doesn't seem to have sunk in.

Anniebach Sat 18-Mar-17 16:59:31

True Fitzy, I have given up hope of winning the next election, my concern is the number of labour seats we will lose . When we do lose I suppose we will read - Corbyn would have won but for the Tory press. For some if he shot someone the gun would be blamed

rosesarered Sat 18-Mar-17 17:03:43

Yes, the right wing press would have been aiming it.

Anniebach Sat 18-Mar-17 17:07:21

Most definitely Rosesarered

Ana Sat 18-Mar-17 17:10:34

And don't forget the completely right-wing-biased BBC (ha, ha!)...

Anniebach Sat 18-Mar-17 17:16:34

Yes Ana, that Laura ? had best emigrate

petra Sat 18-Mar-17 17:55:58

I always thought that Laura Kuenssberg was sooooo right wing. grin
