On Nationalism… – English Scots for YES
Many of you will have seen the comments of London’s Mayor Sadiq Khan over the weekend to Scottish Labour’s annual conference; many of you will share the outrage felt by our members, by supporters of Scottish independence, and indeed across the Scottish political spectrum at what we feel is a complet...

If retired people emigrate to Scotland hmm will their pension be pegged at the level it is when they leave the (rest of the) UK just as it is if someone emigrates to Australia, New Zealand etc?

durhamjen Sun 19-Mar-17 23:21:39

Not if Scotland is in the EU, Jalima.
We don't have to catch a plane or a ship, either and take ages to get there!

MaizieD Sun 19-Mar-17 23:22:07

I expect you all knew that anyway

Well, some of us did, Jalima.wink

And the Tudor's claim to to throne was pretty dubious, too...

But it all really goes to show what a nebulous concept 'nationality' is. Not only have our monarchs not been purebred any nationality in particular but neither have the people they governed.

Yes, that is so true.

Not only have our monarchs not been purebred any nationality in particular but neither have the people they governed.

As the OP is entitled English Scots for Yes
DH is very much a mixture of the countries of the United Kingdom and I am more Anglo-Saxon/French
Both mongrels smile

Jalima Sun 19-Mar-17 23:35:01

Not if Scotland is in the EU, Jalima.
But - would the pension increases be maintained for pensioners living in the EU after Brexit?
Has that been agreed?

durhamjen Sun 19-Mar-17 23:37:51

Nothing's been agreed, Jalima. Or if it has, May's not letting on.

Jalima Sun 19-Mar-17 23:52:16

Well, some of us did, Jalima.
I wasn't trying to teach grannies about eggs, but ....... wink

From James V1th/1st daughter Elizabeth's marriage too Frederick of Bohemia, the royal family had until George V1th consistently had German spouses. Prince Phillip is actually partly German so their German credentials are still pretty prominent!
The Tudor claim was very tenuous, coming as it did though Margaret Beaufort granddaughter of John of Gaunt son of Edward 111! The Beauforts were illegitimate but later legitimized, but unable to inherit the throne! A point presumably forgotten by Henry V11th!!

MaizieD Mon 20-Mar-17 08:52:34

They had mostly German spouses mainly because very few other countries were protestant. Look at the problems that being Roman Catholic caused Henrietta Maria (Chas 1), Catherine of Braganza (Chas 2) and Mary of Modena (Jas 2).

And, of course, being divided into lots of independent countries the Germanic states provided a wide choice of suitably 'royal' potential spouses.

This seems to have morphed into a history thread......and very interesting it is too.smile

nigglynellie Mon 20-Mar-17 11:21:30

It does roses! Possibly because that and English Literature were the only subjects I personally showed any aptitude for!! Everything else did and still does remain a mystery!!!

varian Mon 20-Mar-17 13:47:56

When I did Higher English, it is true that most of the literature we covered was by English authors - including Chaucer, Shakespeare, Francis Bacon, Alexander Pope, Jane Austen, the Brontes, Thackery, Dickens, etc, and a lot of poets from Palgrave's Golden Treasury.

But we also read a lot of Robert Burns, Robert Louis Stevenson, Walter Scott, etc.

Hardly anything from the 20th century.

Jalima Mon 20-Mar-17 14:25:01

We did sing a lot of Scottish songs at school, primary and high school - a choir of English girls warbling 'Speed Bonnie Boat' and 'My Love is Like a Red Red Rose' etc
We read Sir Walter Scott, Robert Louis Stevenson (but not much Burns, sorry) at school in England

Jalima Mon 20-Mar-17 14:26:52

The driving force was religion and the need to have a Protestant monarch on the throne

rosesarered Mon 20-Mar-17 14:30:45

No Burns ( that I remember) but certainly Scottish songs, Speed Bonnie boat,Mari's wedding, and Loch Lomond( by yon bonnie banks) and is Blow the wind Southerly a Scottish song?we also did Scottish dancing.

33days until ST George's Day. It is time for England to fly their flag with pride. Come on England where is your Dame Vera spirit ? At the very least a vase of red roses (for one day only Yorkshire) in the window and a length of bunting. YOU CAN DO IT !

nigglynellie Mon 20-Mar-17 14:55:37

Blow the wind southerly is an English folk song which comes from Nothumberland. Kathleen Ferrier sang it beautifully, such a tragedy her life was cut so short.
I remember reading Guy Mannering for A level literature, along with Chaucer (not the rude bits!) Shakespeare, Middlemarch and I think The Tennent of Wildfell Hall. It's so long ago my memory is slightly hazy!!
I'm sorting out my bunting as we speak!!!!

petra Mon 20-Mar-17 16:54:13

I think Theresa could have chosen a better day to give them the resignation letter grin it's a Wednesday!! hardly a party day. Now, do I have my party on the actual glorious day or leave it 'til the next Saturday, decisions decisions.

nigglynellie Mon 20-Mar-17 17:09:09

Any excuse for a party!!!

rosesarered Mon 20-Mar-17 19:50:22

Can I join you Petra..... is there going to be champagne??
I have bunting, and my name is red roses.grin

Fitzy54 Mon 20-Mar-17 21:38:14

All sounds good to me - though personally I might think of it more along the lines of a wake!

rosesarered Mon 20-Mar-17 21:40:16

Well, a riotous Irish wake perhaps, with lots of fun, drink and a fight or two.grin

Jalima Mon 20-Mar-17 23:30:41

That was at Cheltenham last week roses grin

We must fight back against nationalism wherever we find it. The SNP claim they are different because they have left wing policies. But now Jim Doson, a far-right millionaire, former BNP member, supporter of Trump and Putin, now plans to back Scottish separatism.

I don't think any Irish will be enthusiastic about your wake, roses. Most of them appear to be a) cross at being taken out of the EU against their will, and b) terrified at the implications for the continuation of the Good Friday Agreement and the prospect of renewal of unrest in the province.

I assume that you just didn't consider Irish sensibilities when you made that remark.
