Ever wondered why the UK is so anxious to keep Scotland in the 'family of nations?' Well, here is one very good reason -

An oil exploration firm has reported a major discovery west of Shetland.

Surveys by Hurricane Energy indicate that the Lancaster and Halifax oil fields are actually a single entity featuring a column of oil a kilometre deep.

A billion barrels of oil could be contained within the well, making it the largest undeveloped discovery in the North Sea, according to Hurricane.

Chief executive Dr Robert Trice said: "This is a highly significant moment for Hurricane and I am delighted that the Halifax well results support the company's view that its substantial Lancaster discovery has been extended to include the Halifax licence.

"We believe that the greater Lancaster area is a single hydrocarbon accumulation, making it the largest undeveloped discovery on the UK Continental Shelf.

"These are exciting times for Hurricane

Hurricane reportedly needs to raise around £318m to develop the discovery and aims to begin extracting oil in 2019.

Meanwhile, oil has begun to flow from Maersk's Flyndre field, which straddles the UK and Norwegian sectors of the North Sea.

Production is estimated to peak at around 10,000 barrels of oil per day and the field is expected to be productive until at least 2023.

Everyone knows that the price of oil has plummeted and that Scotland's oil reserves are hardly worth having, so I'm sure that can't be the reason. The UK government won't be giving it a thought!

I think it'll take a bit more than six years worth of oil to build a thriving long term economy!! I too doubt the government have given it any thought at all

It would be nice, because for all some of us say in frustration, we really don't want to lose you, not after all these years through thick and thin, and you have some of the best scenery in the UK!!! We really don't want you to become a foreign country!!?

I know DJ because in September 2014 we were given the chance to vote and the Majority voted to stay in the U.K

I'm pleased to hear it grannypiper. At least stay until after Brexit, then if you feel you want to go, then ok, we will regretfully say goodbye and wish you well.

That was then; this is now, grannypiper. From what I understand, lots have changed their minds since the Brexit vote.

The Scottish parliament vote is on now, on 130.
Amendment for 16-17 year olds and EU members to be allowed to vote, and approved the motion for a second referendum.

How ridiculous EU members being allowed to vote when Scots living in England, Ireland, Wales not given a vote. Anyway a second referendum will not be allowed to happen.

I agree magpie23, I guess that's being done to try and skew the vote! whereas Scots living in the rest of the UK might just be happy with the status quo, and we can't allow that can we!! Bit blatant really!! As you say though, I doubt there will be another referendum so soon after the ' once in a generation' one of 2014! Scottish generations are obviously a lot shorter than the rest of the world!! Wonder if there is another one whether it will be declared to be the same?!! If so would we believe it?!!

you said it Magpie ! Of course Scots living in other parts of the UK should be able to vote ( and ludicrous that EU members should have any say in it at all) says it all about the SNP, they are scared to death of losing.

EU members living in Scotland and paying tax and rates have just as much right as English people living in Scotland to vote. I think it was a labour party amendment.
Other parties had amendments, too, and had votes on them. Unfortunately the members were not swayed by the debates.
Perhaps those who do not vote for the SNP ought to get their act together.

By the way, I hope that when our parliament building has been updated, we have the same voting system as there is in Holyrood. So much more sensible.

No Djen they don't have the right, they are not UK citizens, they are being allowed which is a different thing altogether to a right.
Can you imagine this same scenario in Spain?I think not.
Why would EU citizens even want to get involved with this.Scotland is not going to be able to stay in the EU.
Why aren't Scots living in other parts of the UK allowed to vote?Oh yes, they like other countries in the UK and would vote to stay part of it, so the SNP can't have that, can they?

They do have their act together, but the SNP aided and abetted by the Greens will always win out ( I can see it changing though, a few years down the road)

The Scottish Green Party have behaved dishonestly and dishonourably today in supporting the SNP.

In his keynote speech to his party's conference in October 2015, Scottish Greens leader Patrick Harvie said: "The question of independence may well be put again, but let's say that the people of Scotland are in charge of that. We propose a citizens' initiative so that it is the public who say when they are ready for that question to be put, not political parties carving up a deal behind closed doors."

Every recent opinion poll has shown conclusively that the people of Scotland, or at least a substantial majority, are totally opposed to another independence referendum any time soon.

The Scottish Green Party have reneged on their manifesto and stitched up a deal with the SNP "behind closed doors" - this is absolutely disgraceful!!!

Scottish Green Party voted that way to give the people of Scotland - i.e., the people who live in Scotland - the right to vote on their future, rather than leaving it with Theresa May to say what will happen to them. She obviously wants her own dictatorial way everywhere else, and will get it.

If as you say, varian, the Scots would reject it, then there is no problem.
May gave the reason for now not being the time the fact that in a couple of years time they would know what they were voting for.
Shouldn't we all be given that choice?

If you are maikng the point durhamjen that TM is being inconsistent, I agree.

I think all of the people of the UK should be given another say on brexit when we actually know what the proposed deal is.
