Saw this announced this evening ! This is to protect 4 year olds against online and social media sexual content .

All 4 of my grandchildren have access to technology in some form or another. Not unsupervised. I am struggling to understand why our 5 year old would benefit in any way shape or form. Am I missing the point?

I can clearly see the benefit for older secondary school children but I am almost positive my littlest ones would be totally uninterested and probably slightly confused. They believe in Santa and the Tooth Fairy - sex is a step too far.

Please give me an explanation .... I need to go and lie down in a darkened room!

caretaker well I rest my case. In now way is 'On Chesil Beach' funny. It is a tragic story about a couple who are traumatised by their wedding night due to ignorance.

I think that the underlying problem is that these are very sensitive issues and it is hard to hand that over to another person on behalf of our children. TBH I can think of teachers that I knew as a child and that I know now who I would not wish to be having these discussions with my children or GC.

I would imagine that this is one reason why parents might wish to retain the right for their children not to be involved in the lessons; and not just the ostrich syndrome or prudery.

Ideally this knowledge should be imparted by parents; but we all know that this does not always happen.

And of course there will be pupils from other cultures and/or religions which would not agree to this, although I take your point absolutely gillybob.

Surely it would be against the law for schools to refuse to allow parents to opt out (and anyway they'd just keep their children off for the day every time a lesson was due).
