Concerned that many of those starving millions in the horn of Africa and the Yemen are going to starve to death. Is this a sign of charity fatigue climate change or just political incompetence?

MawBroon Thu 16-Mar-17 21:08:01

You are not suggesting the diversionary tactic might have been deliberate, thatbags?
I don't know about "freaking out" but mental health is a sensitive issue and to suggest otherwise shows a lack of awareness. The days of dismissing someone's views in cavalier fashion by saying they are "barking" or "bonkers " are happily behind us (unless one is writing a Sun headline.)
I don't know whyAnkers can't just say "sorry, didn't mean mental health, meant emotional stress, or end of your tether" or whatever and no more need be said. hmm

Ana Thu 16-Mar-17 21:01:44

Nothing wrong at all with mentioning mental health issues.
But it does seem to be a bit pointed to do so when it's quite obvious which poster is being referred to.

norose4 Thu 16-Mar-17 20:59:27

Thanks MCEM I suppose it is inevitable, it seems so sad to me that personal egos become more important than the actual thread , especially with this particular topic & we are all of a certain age !! ,?. not a good example to set for our grandchildren

thatbags Thu 16-Mar-17 20:57:47

In short, just don't be derailed.

thatbags Thu 16-Mar-17 20:57:10

We might do better to ignore ridiculous diversionary tactics and carry on discussing the issue mentioned in the OP.

thatbags Thu 16-Mar-17 20:55:49

I don't think there need be any freaking out about the mention of mental health. I thought we were all supposed to be getting more accepting of mental illness as not essentially different from any other kind of illness, i.e. it's not something to blame anyone about, or to feel ashamed about. Lots of people have mental health issues. So what?

mcem Thu 16-Mar-17 20:46:51

This had happened so often.
A serious and thoughtful thread is derailed when someone starts blethering nonsense.
The topic under discussion is more important and more interesting than going off on tangents involving reporting and GN rules.

petra Thu 16-Mar-17 20:44:31

Norose4 Hardly 'squabbling' Ankers stated that some posters might not be in the best of mental health. So I take that that could mean anyone as no names were mentioned.

mcem Thu 16-Mar-17 20:42:00

'Twas ever thus - when same-old, same-old poster gets involved!

Jalima Thu 16-Mar-17 20:40:58

Luckygirl I agree with your post and that is a dilemma.

Colonialism is looked back on with such disgust and disdain now and things were not perfect in what was Southern Rhodesia - but it was known as the bread basket of Africa with its rich soils. The situation is far from that now, people are starving - except for Mugabe's henchmen and their families.
Zimbabwe, if run as it was, could be providing food to other areas of Africa which are suffering from drought.

However, it is the actions of the fundamentalists, the warmongers, the egomaniacs that prevent this happening.

norose4 Thu 16-Mar-17 20:40:08

Ps. I Forgot to add the word 'shameful '

norose4 Thu 16-Mar-17 20:29:58

I guess the very sad plight of the starving millions has taken a back seat to the squabbling match that is taking place on this thread ☹️

Jalima Thu 16-Mar-17 20:27:17

Unless of course you're referring to yourself?
I did wonder that actually, rather than an accusation

Ankers you don't have to say, of course, but perhaps it would be best to withdraw from any threads that may upset you further.

Ankers Thu 16-Mar-17 20:23:41

I have reported you Ana.
You have said nothing to back up your accusation.

Ana Thu 16-Mar-17 20:16:17

There is certainly no withdrawal, Ankers.

Exactly, Petra. And there was another occasion when she was obieone.

If you really feel you have to come back after a... shall we say...break, Ankers it might be wiser to try to sound a bit different?

Ankers Thu 16-Mar-17 20:06:24

There is no withdrawal of accusation. So 18.43 applies.

petra Thu 16-Mar-17 19:59:34

I think you know exactly to what Ana refers to, Ankers. I think it was when you were soontobe.

Ana Thu 16-Mar-17 19:43:42

Yes, come on Ankers.

Why do you think you have the authority to tell us that we should be aware that some posters may have mental health issues...?

MawBroon Thu 16-Mar-17 19:32:09

Sorry to bang on like a terrier at a rabbit hole but it is not good enough to ignore this and hope nobody noticed Ankers said it. Surely we deserve an answer to "mental health-gate"

Luckygirl Thu 16-Mar-17 18:50:30

I will admit that at times I feel tempted to just turn away - not because I do not care, but because I feel overwhelmed by the complexities of getting the right sort of aid to the right places at the right time; by the impossibility of knowing which charities are using the money wisely; by the impossibility of eliminating the tribal atavistic instincts that being down misery on the most vulnerable....I could go on. Is it any wonder we feel powerless.

I do not even buy the argument that we are part of the problem by buying goods that have been made by people being paid a pittance - that pittance may be the difference between life and death for them and their families.

We could of course stop manufacturing and profiting from the arms trade.

Contraception is an important issue - but it goes hand in hand with education; and how can people be educated when their lives are lived in a battle zone?

It is all too sad to contemplate sometimes.

MawBroon Thu 16-Mar-17 18:46:47

Can you answer the question though please?
What prompted your comment on "mental health" and what qualifies you to suggest a diagnosis? confused

Ankers Thu 16-Mar-17 18:43:56

No I dont so I am going to have to speak to gransnet.
Unless you would care to withdraw the accusation.

Ana Thu 16-Mar-17 18:35:25

But apart from that, why do you think it's OK to tell us that we should consider whether another poster has or has not got mental health issues? I'ts offensive and intrusive IMO.

Ana Thu 16-Mar-17 18:33:05

Of course you do.

Ankers Thu 16-Mar-17 18:22:59

Who Ana?

Please do not decide to start to tell lies about me.

I think you need to provide details either on here, or to gransnet.

I havent the faintest idea who or what you are talking about.
