The Netherlands fights back against populism

I was hugely relieved to see that voters in the Netherlands had not gone down the right wing populist path of Brexit and Trump. They have rejected Geert Wilders which means, I hope, that the EU stands strong. If only we had been so responsible and had not condemned ourselves to be left out in the cold.

A. You will be fine with your Turkish yarn Jalima they have had a ding dong with Holland but still like us, here in the UK ( and as you say, they are not yet, if ever, in the EU) so our supplies of Turkish Delight are safe too.grin

Jalima Fri 17-Mar-17 10:23:02

roses grin

Some of the yarn I use is from Turkey - as they are not in the EU will that affect the supply post-Brexit?

Yet again, a GN thread that implies that if you voted Leave, you have to be in favour of the extreme Right. It is very tiring to keep answering those who would have it so.

If I tried to imply that every Remainer is in favour of an integrated, ever-closer United States of Europe or a travelling companion of Goldman Sachs, I would no doubt, quite rightly, be howled down.

Yes, there are extreme Right people who voted Leave but we are not all extreme Right. The common factor is simply, as the voting paper said, do you want to be in or out of the EU.

Am starting to think that maybe even the craft threads have to include a 'Brexit' comment.hmm

whitewave Fri 17-Mar-17 07:53:19

It's a shame we couldn't have done the same before Brexit. We were unfortunately in totally short supply (and still are) of good leadership.

Eloethan Thu 16-Mar-17 23:43:35

Thank goodness.

durhamjen Thu 16-Mar-17 23:35:58

Pleased that the Green Party gained so many seats, too.

Jalima Thu 16-Mar-17 23:25:18

Post Number five
(are you bored yet?)

Rigby46 you posted but didn't give your opinion, I presume you are pleased [?]

Jalima Thu 16-Mar-17 23:22:43

or watching the news?

There, that's four more posts smile

Jalima Thu 16-Mar-17 23:21:21

why so few posts grin in that 19 minutes perhaps people were:
eating dinner?
washing up?
even having a wine?

Regarding the French elections, the polls may not be reliable.
Rinouchka the polls have proved less than reliable here too - in fact I am wondering what is the point of them.

I think thatbags could be right, there has been rather a media frenzy over him. He is quite noticeable and controversial politicians do attract attention.

There has been a lot going on in the Netherlands too, with the Turkish problems and the Dutch have probably decided that safe and steady is the best course.

Jalima Thu 16-Mar-17 23:14:27

I expect there's a lot of disappointed 'righties' on GN.
I shouldn't think there are a lot who would support Wilders shock
If any!

You could still be right of centre but not agree with anything at all that he says.

For anyone who wants to thank the Dutch.

Christinefrance Thu 16-Mar-17 21:49:28

That's my understanding daphnedil but things can be unpredictable. Hadn't heard about the spoiling of ballot papers Rinouchka, interesting.

Rinouchka Thu 16-Mar-17 20:54:35

Regarding the French elections, the polls may not be reliable. Here in SW France, many younger Socialist voters are disillusioned with their party, hate Marine Le Pen, detest Fillon, and dislike Macron because they see him as a traitor. Many of the people we know will vote for Jean- Luc Mélenchon in the first round, then spoil their ballot in the second round. Their intention is to prevent either of the second round candidates from getting the majority( 51 % of votes cast).

rosesarered Thu 16-Mar-17 20:47:10

I think you are right thatbags as probably happened with UKIP here.

thatbags Thu 16-Mar-17 20:45:02

I wonder if the media bigged up Wilders more than support for him warranted and that the Dutch election results simply show reality, i.e. that there was never a huge amount of support for his politics?

rosesarered Thu 16-Mar-17 20:41:33

.....another piece of daphnedil unpleasant comment more like. This is an opinion forum, so which bit of my post do you have a problem with this time I wonder, hmmm?

LumpySpacedPrincess Thu 16-Mar-17 20:29:37

Thank goodness, I don't think I could take another depressing election result.

daphnedill Thu 16-Mar-17 20:15:56

Christine All the polls are predicting that Le Pen will narrowly win the first round, but without an overall majority. This will almost certainly be followed by a second round with Le Pen and Macron. Even if Fillon makes it to the second round (unlikely), the polls predict that the candidate who isn't Le Pen will win.

Unless you know differently...

daphnedill Thu 16-Mar-17 20:12:52

Aha! Another evidence-free rosesareredism, projecting your wishes on other people.

daphnedill Thu 16-Mar-17 20:11:17

rigby There have been a number of comments on GN about the EU falling apart, especially after the Dutch, French and German elections. Well, it's one down - the German election won't produce an anti-EU government and it's not looking good for Le Pen. Never mind! I'm sure they'll suck it up.

rosesarered Thu 16-Mar-17 19:56:37

....and we can't be on GN all day either! grin

Ana Thu 16-Mar-17 19:55:04

Blimey Rigby, the thread's only been up for an hour! How many posts to you expect? This isn't MN...

rosesarered Thu 16-Mar-17 19:53:23

I don't think it means the EU will be stronger at all, just that it won't fall apart just at the moment.
