I do not think we have been "assholes" - we have, as I said before, always been lukewarm about the "club" and been on the sidelines grumbling. That was never going to change; and was not an acceptable position.

(1001 Posts)Quoting breaking news in the Guardian. Davis is quoted as saying...
“The government is clear in its aims: a deal that works for every nation and region of the UK and indeed for all of Europe – a new, positive partnership between the UK and our friends and allies in the European Union.”
Feeling a bit in shock at those words, as at no time have I felt they are at all clear in their aims. The regions of the UK are disaparate with very different needs and fears. The nations of the UK have very different views of what is best for them, Scotland in particular being very forthright in stating their opposition to what is planned. Finally, what can he possibly mean by a deal that is good for all of Europe? Is he cynically saying EU members will be glad to see the back of us?
Didn't I read somewhere (probably another doctors waiting room paper) that France picked up most of the bill for the UK's rebate?
I have no problems with Germans Daphne, lovely people, my name is German. But you have to admit, Germany is sort of, well, in charge!
The richer the country the more they pay. Seems a fair way of dealing with it, except we moaned on and on until we achieved a rebate. What assholes we've been over the years.
Rigby you have now mentioned my post about the weather about 3 times, it must have really got to you for some reason, did you take a brolly just in case?As you like to say about your own posts 'it was just a jokey remark'.
How about stopping all the nonsense about 'old' people and how they voted and ooh how selfish they are etc.The age of any voter is neither here nor there, there were many 18 year olds no doubt who knew nothing much about the pros and cons of either remaining or leaving the EU, and had the Remain group won the vote nobody would be talking angrily about the choice of young people( or old people come to that.)
I understand that some people are worried about leaving, and how things will work out,
But casting around wildly for anyone to blame for the way the vote went is a waste of time.
No lucky not leave voters. I'm talking about the hard right Tory MPs - those that have for 40 years spent their time moaning on and on. They have their Brexit, but they aren't content with that, they now want to strip the Environment and workers of much of the rights achieved over the past 40 years. As John Major called them " the bastards"
Presumably there is a formula for working out the payments each country makes. I have never seen what it was but maybe if we knew it would make it easier for everyone to understand. I assumed it was done in a fair manner and so we as a country were relatively well off compared to other countries.
Do we have a good deal with the EU? - we are the second biggest net payer-in after Germany. Does that seem right?
It is sad that ww regards leave voters as "loons" - I certainly do not feel like that about the majority of voters on either side - they all had their reasons.
The European Parliament has mentioned the 48% ever since the vote. Verhafstadt has repeatedly said that the people who voted to remain must be remembered.
Love it, daphne.
Don't you also just love the name "The Great Repeal Bill"?
What century does Theresa May think she is living in?
It seems the only people recognising the 48% are the Europeans. We are being totally ignored, so must make ourselves heard.
The loons are lining up to rid themselves of so much that is valuable and good.
Well, people, I've come to this thread very late in the day but just wanted to say that I was totally amazed at how sad and bereft I felt on Wednesday when I saw that letter handed over. I actually felt that if someone had said the wrong thing to me at any given time I would've collapsed in a heap. I couldn't believe my reaction - how could we have cast ourselves adrift like this? I am so brassed off with the PM repeatedly talking about the 'will of the British people' - at least Donald Tusk was thoughtful enough to mention that nearly half the British people who voted didn't want to leave. I am proud to be part of the 48% who didn't want to leave. Never before has the political situation got to me so much - I have to turn away from the television each time Nigel Farage comes on - I know that had the vote gone against him in the same proportion as it did with the Remainers, he would've been shouting foul before you could say 'Jack Robinson'. David Davis on Question Time was a disgrace - couldn't string two coherent sentences together, and the UKIP woman sent a chill up my spine. Azie09 I'm horrified that that incident has happened in Stroud - a place that I love to bits. And Valerian you're right - it!s time for the Lib Dems to put the past behind them and start to prepare for battle - then perhaps I shall start to feel a little more optimistic!
I can never understand how anybody can be so selfish. The UK already has the best deal that any nation will ever get from the EU. Hopefully, a new generation will have the opportunity to return to the EU (sooner rather than later), but they won't get the same deal and millions will have been wasted on a totally pointless exercise, except to pander to some people's idea of "sovereignty". (Oh, and a few people who are already wealthy will get even wealthier!)
Oh and I forgot - the anti Brexit March thread - the usual suspects piled in almost before the OP had hit send. roses charmingly said she hoped the westher 'pissed it down'.
Azie well as you will have seen I don't always keep my cool but I find lies and misinformation difficult to keep cool about. The ageism that certain posters display on GN is truly astounding at times. Goady threads about precious snowflakes, the rudeness of some of the posts on the thread started by a DIL with kindly intentions. Post after post about youngsters today not knowing they are born and they want everything now. And the misogyny - don't get me started on that eg Why do young women complain about being whistled at, I thought it was a compliment when it happened to me - look at the judge/cricketer thread to see some posters contorting themselves into explaining why the judge was right. MN is much more my natural home but it stay on here a) because nellie told me to go
b) I have something to contribute and understand that facts and correct information are needed for a viewpoint to be valid and c) there are some posters who are a joy to discuss with - looks like you will be one of them.
That just about sums it up GillT57.

This is funny too......well, it would be if it wasn't so serious. Not brilliant at copying links, so hope it works!
Well at least Azie09 I can look my children in the eye and tell them I voted to remain, and I will support all efforts to ensure that the deal we get is the best we can. I have joined the Libdems to do this as Tim Farron has, I think, shown himself to be one of the more honest speaking of the mass of politicians, as has Heseltine incidentally, didn't think I would ever say that
. We all had our reasons for voting as we did, and it is regrettable that some, especially on GN, have chosen to sneer and belittle those who voted differently, can you imagine Nigel Farage being a good loser, and getting over it?No, neither can I!
Thank you Rigby46 . I'm not very new but I've spent a long time intimidated and/or infuriated by the politics threads and hugely impressed by posters like yourself. I don't know how some of you keep your cool, your chins up and despair at bay.
I'm glad you do though and I try to inform myself and understand the arguments. I can't have patience with those who think being older somehow gives you greater insight or privilege It is important to be aware of the world we are creating for the younger generation and I don't think that's just making sure they can buy a house. I think it's about creating a peaceful, just world, giving them a broad education and listening to their opinions.
If at some future date todays young will no doubt be able to lobby the government of the day to rejoin the EU. Maybe by then it'll be a better place and worth being a member of.
Well said, Gilly, I wholeheartedly agree. I find it incredible looking back that there weren't restrictions on the referendum, for example a minimum turnout, or that the result would only be valid if the difference between the 2 votes was more than the no. of people who didn't vote at all; after all, if the 4% who didn't vote had voted for remain, the result would have been reversed.
We didn't really win WW2 Rigby46. Germany's has.
