Grandee or Political Has-Been?

"Grandee" is a term often used to described politicians who have semi-retired to the Lords or are CEOs or similar. Their opinions are venerated. But when is a Grandee really just a Political Has-Been? A lot of these Grandees have been involved in the referendums (Scotland & Brexit) and subsequent debates - e.g. Heseltine, Major, Blair.
Yesterday I heard Paddy Ashdown give reasons why people voted Brexit including "because they got out of bed on the wrong side" - how dismissive is that of the electorate? They disagreed with you Paddy - no need to be so patronising.
Therefore he's my nomination for Political Has-Been - any other nominations? grin

The BBC has got to have someone to interview I guess half the electorate is asking themselves who these people are, they don't seem to able to realise when their pet political idea has had its time. I wonder how many people stopped in the street would know who Paddy Ashdown is. To be powerless now must be horrid for all those listed so far.

At least Grandees have at some time been elected. It is people like Alastair Campbell that annoy me - megalomaniacs who want to run the country from a back room with no accountability. I am convinced that he, and his cohorts, cause 90% of the problems in the Labour party. He has now set up a group to try to overturn Brexit.

Whenever their "grandee" behaviours gets to me I just imagine them sitting on the loo with their trousers round their ankles. Brings everything into perspective.

Still impressed by Betty Boothroyd.

Jalima Fri 31-Mar-17 09:42:02

Sorry!! Typo - never-wozzer

Presumably a never-wozza is the female version.

Jalima Fri 31-Mar-17 09:40:05

absent unfortunately he has had much influence for a never-wozza (great term)!

MawBroon Fri 31-Mar-17 09:05:29

Could Farage be described as a "Has never been"??

Anniebach Fri 31-Mar-17 09:00:34

Oh yes, a dead sheep , thank you. Brown has passion, this lack of passion could be the reason many have lost interest in politicians , Cammeron is guilty of starting this with his pre scripted PMQ's , well rehearsed jokes.

I want passion

TerriBull Fri 31-Mar-17 08:59:28

I loved Dennis Healey's "being criticised by Geoffrey Howe is like being savaged by a dead sheep" it was a blinder grin Although on opposite sides of the house, I believe they were mates, I like to think of them both having a chortle about Dennis' levity over lunch and a glass or two wine

Rigby46 Fri 31-Mar-17 08:43:27

ab it was even better than that - savaged by a DEAD sheep. Agree about Brown being a big beast - perfect description in a positive way IMO

Anniebach Fri 31-Mar-17 08:40:01

thinking about this last night Dennis Healy's put down of Jeffrey Howe, - it's like being savaged by a sheep,- came to mind.

There is no passion in MP's now ,

Jalima one can only sympathise with NormanTebbit, and in many ways admire his resilience, but he was a major political figure and remains an old school Thatcherite through and through, and those guys have very much had their day.

absent Thu 30-Mar-17 23:29:55

Teetime Nigel Farage is a not a grandee or a has-been; he's a never wozzer.

Anniebach Thu 30-Mar-17 23:17:12

Nothing wrong with calling labour politicians big beasts, the media have called them this for many a year.

Mandelson is no way a big beast, neither is Blair.

Brown is , we have very few now , no fire in them,

Jezza is not s has been , if you mean Corbyn Fitzy, he is a never was and a never will be.

Jalima Thu 30-Mar-17 22:49:51

Sorry, don't include Norman Tebbit, he has had much to deal with and consequently never achieved what he could have done.

Fitzy54 Thu 30-Mar-17 22:47:49

I think poor Jezza has become a Has-Been before making it as a Big Beast or Grandee. On the Tory side Norman Tebbit, and without a doubt Paddy for the LDs. Everyone in UKIP, including the party itself.

Jalima Thu 30-Mar-17 22:37:14

3/10 Oh dear! You haven't been paying too much attention to what these 'big beasts' of the party have had to say. Perhaps their view won't sway your decision too much?

Well, it was ages ago.

Jalima Thu 30-Mar-17 22:33:37

Yes, a lot of older ex-politicians have the experience but sometimes the same old faces are trotted out for their opinions time after time.
Now, is Nigel Farage a has-been or not? Mission accomplished therefore opinion not needed any more.

Ginny42 Thu 30-Mar-17 22:15:50

Worrying that I'm the same age as these 'has beens'! I do think some of them are worth listening to otherwise, why would anyone listen to us?

Jalima Thu 30-Mar-17 22:09:21

I always think of the term 'grandee' applying after the age of about 80!

'Big beast' - someone with power and influence, although I got told off when I called a Labour politician a Big Beast on here grin
because someone said I was being nasty (daft). Tories are often referred to as 'Big Beasts' too in the media.

Has-been - someone who just won't go away.

dbDB77 Thu 30-Mar-17 21:48:51

Yes Annie - John Prescott is certainly a Big Beast grin - but I think Peter Mandelson will become a Grandee - too effete for Big Beast status.
On the female side I think Shirley Williams is a Grandee and Margaret Beckett will become one if/when she moves from the Commons to the Lords - but can Grandees have caravans? hmm

Anniebach Thu 30-Mar-17 13:33:29

I got them all correct in the Guardie link , but did receive emails from those who were supporting a candidate so suppose I cheated

Anniebach Thu 30-Mar-17 13:25:06

Labour grandees?

Always been Tory grandees . Labours big beasts

mostlyharmless Thu 30-Mar-17 12:09:35

Bring back "Spitting Image". Lots of good material out there nowadays!

POGS Thu 30-Mar-17 12:05:19

www.theguardian.com/politics/2015/aug/19/who-are-these-labour-grandees-backing-labour-leadership-quiz

If it's good enough for the Guardian to name Labour Party Grandees then it's good enough for me to use the term grandee in connection with All political parties.

Paddy Ashdown
John Prescott
Peter Mandelson
Baron George Foulkes
