Brexit all done and dusted?

As an arch REMOANER I for one (of many) will not simply roll over and say that is that. As things progress at the very least parliament must ensure that the country does not Brexit in a bad way because of "The Will of the People". So many lies were told by both side at the time of referendum that when the full facts come to light a re-think should be considered.

I have yet to hear a sound reason for voting LEAVE. Of course the EU is far from perfect but we are better trying to change it from within than sniping from outside. A general election or second referendum before the point of absolute no return.

I happen to be visiting Brussels on an educational trip after Easter so until then I will put up and shut up unless really provoked.

The Govts. pre- referendum stance was to remain. TM made a number of new appointments, including the appointment to senior posts of Brexiteers, but my guess is that most of even the post referendum ministers had been remain voters. I think the main problem since the vote has been the pre-negotiation stance of the EU to the effect that the UK must accept all the EU pillars with no caveats plus a contribution, or there would be no deal at all. That may be changing, and as it does it's no surprise to me that the govt. also shows signs of distancing itself from a rock hard Brexit. If both sides are prepared to compromise, we will hopefully salvage something useful out of all this. But I don't see any likelihood of another vote.

The online design magazine Dezeen has just announced the winner of its competition to design a post-brexit passport.

London based Scottish designer Ian Macfarlane has won with this design which looks to me as if, by some horrible accident, he had ruined his beautiful EU / UK passport by spilling something dark and nasty onto half of it.

An apt metaphor for the nasty accident which may ruin the UK???

BTW I think that even if the government were to tell Brexiteers that the evidence shows that it's a big mistake they:

a) wouldn't believe them
and
b) would howl for it to go ahead anyway

But they seem to have taken no loss of Free Movement very calmly.
And potential loss of Parliamentary sovereignty. Out of the EU 'dictatorship' frying pan into the tory 'dictatorship' fire without batting an eyelid...

I think we should separate Civil Servants and MPs here. I agree that MPs should have voted in the interests of the country but poor old civil servants (i.e 'government officials) have to do what they are told, however much they might disagree. I wrote the last post on my tablet, never an easy job, otherwise I might have distinguished between the two in my 'admiration' comment grin

They are not delegates and are supposed to act in the best interests of the COUNTRY and not just to follow an ill conceived poll and result based on lies told.

FarNorth Fri 14-Apr-17 09:27:48

And they could be not ploughing ahead with the most extreme hard Brexit possible.

whitewave Fri 14-Apr-17 08:55:54

What they should be doing is telling the great British public the consequences now that they are coming to understand what will happen.

MaizieD Fri 14-Apr-17 08:51:45

I think that most Civil Servants (i.e givernment officials) and most MPs (as evidenced by the A50 debate) knew it was a mistake. In an odd way I quite admire their determination to do their professional duty to give the public what it appears to want. confused

Btw, roses and others, when you see a new thread title and you think " How boring", the polite thing to do is ignore it.

Nobody, except the Brits, makes a decision about a constitutional decision that, of course, affects future generations, on the basis of a one-off plebiscite. It's not the same as voting in one party or another for four years; it goes to the heart of the way the country works – now and in the future. That referendum was probably one of the stupidest and most damaging things any Brit politician has ever done. Congratulations Mr Cameron!

whitewave Fri 14-Apr-17 08:23:19

Pity they didn't listen last year isn't it. A lot of egos were at stake, and look at the disastrous result.

Let's hope therefore that they ensure that they can do everything possible to mitigate the potential disaster.

I don't care what colour passports are but I am in an invidious position. My passport has expired. A passport is my only form of photo ID as I don't drive and I am legally supposed to carry a form of photo ID all the time. I don't actually cart my passport around with me but do need it for various official purposes, such as changes to my bank accounts.

I don't know what British passports cost these days but I doubt if the price has been reduced in the last ten years. Presumably, if I order a new one, it will be an EU passport because the UK is still part of the EU until withdrawal negotiations are completed in the next two years. Would an EU passport continue to be valid after that time or would I have to buy yet another new [British] one?

Next year, I can apply for New Zealand citizenship, assuming I can afford to, so that would solve the problem. In the interim…

Never mind. I looked it up.

thatbags Sun 02-Apr-17 22:13:23

What's a blimp?

Deedaa Sun 02-Apr-17 21:34:40

Don't worry paddyann at least we'll be able to sink beneath the waves clutching our blue passports! Now there's something I've been losing sleep over (Not) !!!

daphnedill Sun 02-Apr-17 18:54:00

Just been reading George Orwell's "The Lion and the Unicorn", which was written in 1940.

The first line is "As I write, highly civilized human beings are flying overhead, trying to kill me".

I'm amazed how relevant his writing is today and how little some attitudes have not changed. I feel the current government would feel comfortable amongst Blimps.

daphnedill Sun 02-Apr-17 18:46:51

It certainly is paddyann grin.

I think I'll dig out some of my old books about the origins of WW1.

The trouble is that while these dimwits rattle their sabres in Whitehall or in retirement, it's real soldiers who will be sent out to fight the wars.

whitewave Sun 02-Apr-17 18:29:42

grin paddy

paddyann Sun 02-Apr-17 18:27:55

War with Spain,Scotland and NI going their own way ....yes its all going swimmingly well this Brexit lark....lol.

daphnedill Sun 02-Apr-17 18:26:39

Cognitive dissonance rules, eh Ana?

Maybe not, MB, but the other ones will be full up soon and the fallout from Brexit isn't going to go away. It really isn't all done and dusted, whatever Leavers like to think. Negotiations haven't even started, so we haven't even seen the damage yet.

I think it's fascinating to watch the manoeuvring.

MawBroon Sun 02-Apr-17 18:21:36

Is there really the need/demand/"stomach" for another Brexit thread?
Until things start happening, we are still not much further than "talks about talks" all of which amounts to little more than conjecture.

Ana Sun 02-Apr-17 18:07:29

I still won'g be 'gagging' for anything - horrible word!

daphnedill Sun 02-Apr-17 17:54:07

You reckon Ana? We'll see!

"You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time."

Izabella Sun 02-Apr-17 17:22:47

Yawn ..........
