Who cares what colour their passport is?

I've just heard someone on the radio getting all excited about changing the passport colour "back"to dark blue and who said he felt "humiliated" using a "pink" one. Most people under 40 will not have had a blue passport. I quite like the burgundy one ( its not pink) but to be honest, I couldn't care less as long as I can find it and I can get through passport checks quickly. I can understand that the passport needs to be redesigned every so often for security reasons and because of Brexit but I can't understand why its costing £500 million to design a new one and I couldn't care less what colour is it.Is anyone getting excited about this?

My two children both benefited from being EU-citizens when they chose to study abroad. They travelled on their British passports. I suspect the last thing on their minds was the colour of their passports. I deeply regret that we have now decided that our young people will no longer qualify for the enriching and useful experience a study period abroad can be. It makes me angry when I hear people, particularly the older generation, stating that “I am British, not an EU-citizen”. Brexit will affect the young. It is their future.

My new passport arrived yesterday so I'm happy to be European for the next 10 years!
After that, if I choose to renew it (and I hope I will) then I'd prefer to have a Scottish one.

I'm just so sad that I won't have a passport showing that I am a citizen of the EU (and everything that goes with it). I'm not going to trot out the same old arguements, but I completely agree that all this 'I get my country/passport (etc) back' are simply fantasies about what Britain used to be like. So much will be lost for those perculiar dreams!

I totally agree with GracesGranMK2 and others who ask why we are even bothering to spend time debating what colour UK passports are.

I can see why people think national identity is important and that more should be done to ensure that immigration is controlled but there is too much nervousness about offedning people - like the dropping of the word "Easter" for Easter eggs.

I am from a minority religion and I don't always agree with Theresa may but the UK is a predominantly Christian country.

I say to Cadbury's, the National Trust and others - GET OVER IT!

Physically we will be part of their lives, they will have our looks, temprement, talents whether we are part of their lives or not.

We are forever part of them and in the generations yet to come we will still be there.

GracesGranMK2 Tue 04-Apr-17 14:35:57

I started agreeing with you but as for the Easter bit neither Cadbury's or the NT have anything to get over. The word Easter was just not on an advert - it is everywhere else. If I choose to call chocolate eggs just that you cannot tell me what to say - no one can thankfully as we are a free country whatever anyone likes to think.

No one was telling anyone they could not say 'Easter' Eggs. It didn't happen; it is an urban myth; it is fake news. Why don't people make themselves knowledgeable about what actually happened before they start shouting the odds. You are wrong Rr22 - not because you cannot have an opinion, of course you can, but because you did not bother to find out the truth before you formed that opinion.

I care.
I do not want a green passport but I don't mind any other colour.

You get a free passport if you were born before 2nd September 1929, my DM qualifies but at 88 I don't think she'll bother as she's never had one (never wanted to travel abroad).

I am only 61 & remember blue passports, I did prefer them as they were better quality. Mine (burgandy) ran out in 2013, might renew it I don't know as no plans to go abroad at the moment

Jalima1108 Tue 04-Apr-17 15:55:29

I like the red ones, they are slimmer and fit in my bag more easily but I don't really mind what colour they are (EXCEPT GREEN!).

I don't see why it would cost so much to change back to blue because surely they could carry on using red until they ran out of red books then order the new batches in blue?
Or am I missing something?

Anyway, you can always buy one of these:

Other makes are available, including designer ones at silly prices.

I was appalled that the Sunday Express chose to have the passport nonsense on its front page ,when so many other, much more important, things are happening, not the least of which was the brutal attack in Croydon.

GracesGranMK2 Tue 04-Apr-17 16:46:25

I care.
I do not want a green passport but I don't mind any other colour.

Perhaps we could have a choice. Although I wanted a pale blue car but had to have the white one I could afford so on that basis we might end up with the colour we are not keen on. (I wouldn't have a green car Jalima)

Jalima1108 Tue 04-Apr-17 16:53:49

I wouldn't have a green anything (except a lawn!)

silly superstitions.

Jalima1108 Tue 04-Apr-17 16:55:22

Well, I wanted a lovely blue car but couldn't afford it so had a silver one instead, common as muck and sometimes covered in it too.

durhamjen Tue 04-Apr-17 17:01:27

Perhaps the man who thought it pink had a form of colour blindness? Just a thought.

GracesGranMK2 Tue 04-Apr-17 17:17:09

Or it could be a new tradition - like riding in 'Hunting Pink' which is redconfused

daphnedill Tue 04-Apr-17 17:22:36

Some sanity about passports:

durhamjen Tue 04-Apr-17 17:25:58

Obviously the man who was humiliated does not hunt, Gracesgran, or he'd be used to it.
That's a word my grandson cannot say. He always adds an extra 'l'.

Gaggi3 Tue 04-Apr-17 17:29:14

Statistics don't support the claim that this is predominantly a Christian country.

VIOLETTE Tue 04-Apr-17 17:29:37

Why am I thinking changing the passports if it happens, after Brexit is a cynical ploy to extract more money from us ex pats ...the cost of renewing our passports from here is astronomical ......personally I would prefer a 'Citizen of Europe' passport such as is being proposed by some members of the EU Parliament as a way to ensure we can stay living in Europe ......the UK has no concern as regards UK Citizens living in Europe ...only EU Citizens living in the UK ...maybe the UK could propose EU Citizenship for them as well !!!!! I am not holding my breath ...

GracesGranMK2 Tue 04-Apr-17 17:47:45

I think you may have something there Violette (lovely name)grin

HurdyGurdy Tue 04-Apr-17 18:03:17

I would be very pleased to return to the dark blue passport, but only because I think it looks nicer than the burgundy one.

With so many covers available, you can have your passport any colour or pattern you want really.

Penstemmon Tue 04-Apr-17 18:28:59

If "feeling British" depends on the colour of a travel document you must be a very insecure individual confused.
I have had a passport since the age of 9 and have had several blue and burgundy ones..I always felt the same..it did not change my life in any way, except I could travel all over the world and experience a range of cultures and meet new people.

It feels to me that some people are real control freaks and feel that because GB is part of a big club and had to abide by club rules, that GB had a voice in making, they were not 'in control' and that upsets them over petty things like the colour of a passport.

NfkDumpling Tue 04-Apr-17 19:03:18

Have just looked up Open Skies Welshwife. Got it! I think!

It certainly will solve a lot of hassle to just move registered head office addresses to somewhere cheap in the EU.

varian Tue 04-Apr-17 19:10:55

I am very happy with my passport which tells the world that I was born in Glasgow, am a citizen of the United Kingdom and of the European Community.

I really don't care what colour it is, but I would like to keep it exactly as it is.
