May is to make an important announcement at 11.15

whitewave Sat 22-Apr-17 15:48:30

Is that addressed to ana?

rosesarered Sat 22-Apr-17 15:46:07

Just because we may disagree politically doesn't mean we can't be civil and forgo constant little digs.

whitewave Sat 22-Apr-17 15:44:52

Oh! I stand corrected (not)

rosesarered Sat 22-Apr-17 15:43:46

Actually ww none of my comments have been of a personal nature ( to anybody at all.)

rosesarered Sat 22-Apr-17 15:42:28

Ah! Your fave saying!

whitewave Sat 22-Apr-17 15:41:55

rose pot and kettle has suddenly sprung to mind!

rosesarered Sat 22-Apr-17 15:41:14

Hopefully Ana we will get what we want! grin

nightowl Sat 22-Apr-17 15:41:03

anniebach you say: ".. then came the miners strike when we had to fight the enemy within". Who is the "we" you are referring to, and what was the "enemy within"? As I recall it, this was Mrs Thatcher's line but she was apparently persuaded to scrap the reference in her speech to miners being the "enemy within".

Well said Eloethan. I am shocked and surprised by your statement anniebach. I am, by now, fully aware of your view of the Labour Party but I had no idea you agreed with Thatcher's analysis of the miners strike. As someone from a mining area, to another from a mining area, I thought we shared some views in common. I was clearly wrong.

rosesarered Sat 22-Apr-17 15:40:22

GGM2
Why do you always have to make personal comments I wonder?

Ana Sat 22-Apr-17 15:39:41

You mean we might actually be able to stay in the EU, and the last year will all have been like a bad dream...grin

GracesGranMK2 Sat 22-Apr-17 15:36:46

It seems that some who didn't vote for either the conservatives at the last GE or to Leave in the referendum are now hoping they can somehow get rid of both!

That's what happens in a democracy Ana. A new election brings a new mandate. Just think, it may be just what you want.

whitewave Sat 22-Apr-17 15:33:13

fitz You have to wait for the manifesto, but if I was guessing I think they will acknowledge just as the Libs and Greens and remain Tories and some Brexiters that free movement will be desirable certainly in the short term, as London businesses and many other industries, particularly the NHS and agriculture can't function without a supply of this labour.

GracesGranMK2 Sat 22-Apr-17 15:32:42

What this particular GE is about really, is who you think would make the better Leader (and cabinet ) to deal with all the negotiations around leaving the EU.

No it isn't Roses. This election is about that for you (apparently) but others may feel it is about other things for them. You do like telling people what to think don't you.

Fitzy54 Sat 22-Apr-17 15:28:35

Ghetto? No idea where that came from! I'm sure you all get the gist of what I tried to say anyway....

Fitzy54 Sat 22-Apr-17 15:16:09

I still want to know what Labour are saying here. Does anybody have any detail on what Brexit stance Labour propose on freedom of movement? And if it is anything other than " no restrictions" then to me, that looks like as hard a Brexit as anything ghetto suggest the tories will end up with.

dbDB77 Sat 22-Apr-17 15:00:23

I agree with roses - Article 50 has been triggered and we need a government that can best negotiate for us - as things stand the unelected Lords could cause all sorts of mischief to any final deal - if TM wins this GE it will give her the mandate she needs.
I've never voted Tory in my life but this time..?? hmm

rosesarered Sat 22-Apr-17 14:58:57

Well, they have an uphill slog if they think that! Labour has promised to uphold Brexit, and only the Lib Dems are promising 'something' not another referendum but a referendum to accept the new deals ( and try and crawl back to Brussels.)
The Libs won't have the power to do anything though.

Fitzy54 Sat 22-Apr-17 14:57:54

Brexit is clearly the main issue and Labour rightly point to a likely hard Brexit if the tories are in power, but they seem reluctant to explain what terms they would seek. The EU say free movement of Labour is an absolute requirement for soft Brexit. Fine as far as I am concerned - good actually - but is that Labour policy?

Ana Sat 22-Apr-17 14:51:34

Or should do.

It seems that some who didn't vote for either the conservatives at the last GE or to Leave in the referendum are now hoping they can somehow get rid of both!

rosesarered Sat 22-Apr-17 14:46:46

But Brexit takes precedence.

whitewave Sat 22-Apr-17 14:41:01

No this election is about this governments record and Brexit.

rosesarered Sat 22-Apr-17 14:37:09

What this particular GE is about really, is who you think would make the better Leader (and cabinet ) to deal with all the negotiations around leaving the EU.
This is not quite like a normal GE.
In five years time the GE then could be different, more based around domestic policies.
If Labour had a different Leader (now) then it's possible that many more would vote that way, but do enough people trust Corbyn and Co to get a good deal with the EU, as he is generally seen as a weak person.

GracesGranMK2 Sat 22-Apr-17 12:31:29

You are right Jalima. As the man who turned lies into an art form said:

If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.

The next part of the quote however says:

The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie.

He then advises politicians:

It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.

So all we can do, against any of them is to keep seeking real evidence of the truth.

Jalima1108 Sat 22-Apr-17 12:21:56

I suppose the Conservatives being 'good with the economy' is something like the Emperor's new clothes, if some people are told something by a posh bloke they will believe it in spite of all the evidence to the contrary.
Nice one!!

You could substitute the word 'Labour' for 'Conservative' in that sentence and 'posh bloke' (or woman?) would be equally true.

GracesGranMK2 Sat 22-Apr-17 12:11:06

But rain is wet Annie. What you think about the Tories is an opinion. Your argument for holding this opinion may be backed by your evidence of what they have done or will do but it is far from a fact in the same way. Someone else may hold a different opinion based on exactly the same evidence.

However, this is not what I was saying. You do not seem to be getting anything out of the constant barrage of opinion re JC and I fear you are not doing yourself any good. Obviously it is your choice though - I just thought I would say.
