As the article says, we all like a trier and none are more trying than Diane Abbott.

Diane Abbot has called for "10,000 policemen in every ward in the country" there are 7,659 wards. She wants 76million police officers...

whitewave Tue 06-Jun-17 17:44:27

Tory van blew over

Oops

Must be feeling weak and wobbly

Anniebach Tue 06-Jun-17 17:44:35

He will get rid of her, she is no more use to him

Ana Tue 06-Jun-17 17:46:37

Is he mad? Since when does 7,650 times 10,000 equal 76 million? grin

Ana Tue 06-Jun-17 17:54:41

Oh no, he's right! Diane's back-of-envelope figurings must have been similar to mine blushgrin

I am wondering if DA might actually be unwell or suffering some sort of mental or nervous decline.
The slurred speech, spaced out look in her eyes, apparent confusion and inability to answer straightforward questions would have me worried if anybody I knew was showing these symptoms. Too early in the day to be "tired and emotional" is she perhaps showing serious signs of strain(or worse)?

Is her handbag big enough for a hip flask?

Jalima1108 Tue 06-Jun-17 20:01:58

MawBroon I have thought for a while that she seems unwell and not speaking coherently and therefore a serious liability to Corbyn and his hopes and plans.

varian Tue 06-Jun-17 20:06:03

Diane Abbot was a very intelligent high achieving young woman who in her youth broke through boundaries to become a black female British MP when that was a very difficult thing to do.

I do wonder that her dreadful performance in this election campaign may be an indication of early onset dementia. She does seem to be doing even more badly than most of us grannies might do on a bad day.

Jalima1108 Tue 06-Jun-17 20:14:28

Well, I didn't want to mention the 'd' word but I had thought of it varian.

Yes, Like her or not, she was clever, although a teacher or lecgturer apparently did tell her not to get a job involving maths.

Jalima1108 Tue 06-Jun-17 20:14:59

and perhaps I should not get one involving spelling hmm

ninny Tue 06-Jun-17 20:19:25

If that is the case she's not fit to be an MP or Shadow Home Secretary she's made a fool of herself and the Labour Party.

Iam64 Tue 06-Jun-17 20:24:17

I've never been a fan of Diane Abbott. I don't believe she would have been shadow Home Secretary had there been a different labour leader, with the whole parliamentary party to choose from.
I am however, concerned that there isss a health problem. The sky tv interview last night was so bad, I could only watch a bit of it (I'm also away with only intermittent iPad access to news). Her speech seemed slightly slurred and even slower than usual. She looked unwell and obviously struggled to deal with a fairly combative interview. She should be on top of her brief and she isn't, As shadow Home Secretary in election week she should have been prepared for he questions. An experienced politician ought to be able to respond, to have full confidence they know their department and can set out criticicisms of the current government and her own plans to operate more effective counter terrorism.
It was embarrassing and uncomfortable to watch her waffle, totally out of her depth. I find it impossible not to conclude there is a significant health problem. Any employer would surely recognise something is wrong and she needs to take time out.

Anniebach Tue 06-Jun-17 20:32:10

In the sixties the Labour Party had an alcoholic dependant deputy leader. I scoffed at her first interview cock up but if she is going to be accused of making a fool of the party let us remember it has bigger fools and this woman was the first black female MP in the house and we mustn't forget this.

whitewave Tue 06-Jun-17 20:32:32

If it is true - that is sad

GracesGranMK2 Tue 06-Jun-17 20:43:02

I'm glad it's not just me who thought there might be a problem with DA. Although it has been made out that she didn't know what he was talking about re the report she clearly did and when prompted picked up on what he was saying. I agree with Annie - there are bigger fools in politics but it didn't seem to be foolishness yesterday.

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/jun/06/diane-abbott-bullying-shadow-home-secretary-attacks

Is it as The Guardian suggests bullying to identify her blunders and make political capital out of them? Well in a way, yes, like the shameful treatment of Mo Moulmein was when putting weight and losing her hair during cancer treatment.
On the other hand, should Diane Abbotts own boss, I.e.Jeremy Corbyn and the LPHQ not be seeking to protect one of their own more proactively?
Perhaps they are, by pulling DA out of interviews, but more tangible support would at least show an awareness of the duty of care they have for one of their most prominent members up to now.
And dare I say it, endear themselves to the electorate as caring human beings.

POGS Tue 06-Jun-17 21:01:13

I don't follow why her being a black MP is an issue , other than she has made some , shall I say, strong comments about the colour of people herself.

The interviews with Murnaghan, Andrew Marr, LBC and others have obviously raised comment about her ability to take on the role of Home Secretary if Labour were to win on Thursday.

Her interview with Murnaghan yesterday was a shocker if you have not watched it.

If Dianne Abbott is as some are commenting on ill then surely Corbyn and the Labour Party should take her welfare into consideration. I still think she will resign before Thursday or be moved from the role of Shadow Home Secretary/ Home Secretary after the election is over.

Anniebach Tue 06-Jun-17 21:24:06

Her being a black MP is not an issue , being the first black woman MP in the house thirty years ago is to be applauded and I am not being patronising.

It is obvious the woman is ill, either physically or emotionally , she has had a tough two years, sticking with Corbyn when he was st his weakest and I hope he pays her the same respect.

merlotgran Tue 06-Jun-17 21:28:14

Well said, Anniebach. I don't like DA but I hate the feeling that she's being hung out to dry. To repeat a well known Elton John quote, 'She's not a well bunny.'

MawBroon Tue 06-Jun-17 21:33:49

Hear, hear. There is often too little loyalty among politicians, it can be very "dog eat dog" so it would be good to see some humanity from JC and his main people.
I suspect a similar lack of understanding to arise when if Theresa May gets in with a vastly reduced majority -or not at all, then the knives will be out!

Rigby46 Tue 06-Jun-17 21:39:19

ab . I agree with you- I do think she is ill - whether it's something physical,or related to stress who knows? What I do know is that over the years she has been subject to the most vile and racist abuse that some of you could not imagine. It has been much worse recently - here is one recent tweet ' I don't know how Corbyn managed to get it up when he was banging you up your back passage' ( or words to that effect). And she has had abuse since first elected. She must be a brave and strong woman who is now feeling the strain. Cathy Newman from C4 news has tweeted that the hard time she is getting at the moment when interviewed now smacks of bullying. I'm not making excuses for her, and FWIW I have never found her a particularly impressive performer but I do think she is given an extra hard time. I think Boris is performing really badly too and he's supposed to be the Foreign Secretary. As for the Chancellor and Health Secretary - well we don't know how they are performing do we because they've been locked in a cupboard.

MawBroon Tue 06-Jun-17 21:51:08

You might like to read my post of 20.57 re bullying rigby.

Rigby46 Tue 06-Jun-17 21:53:41

I had read it confused

MawBroon Tue 06-Jun-17 22:06:39

Ah, the way you started it was as if the idea of bullying was a new one by Cathy Newman's tweet. Sorry.
