Watching BBC News now. A white van has ploughed into people on London Bridge, shootings and stabbings at Borough Market.

It's still ongoing.

Your first point that is, no Maisie not meant to be satirical at all, just having an opinion.

Bobbysgirl19 Mon 05-Jun-17 00:00:24

Sorry that was an answer to GracesGran. Yes, good point Maisie.

MaizieD Sun 04-Jun-17 23:55:30

Actually, GG, closer reading of Bobbysgirl's post makes me wonder if it was intended to be satirical...

Bobbysgirl19 Sun 04-Jun-17 23:53:28

Yes I do! Most definitely!

MaizieD Sun 04-Jun-17 23:53:05

I'm afraid I think a thread intended for solely for condolences and sympathy is better suited to Chat than News and Politics.

GracesGranMK2 Sun 04-Jun-17 23:34:32

Do you think terrorists attacking people in our country is somehow outside politics Bobbysgirl?

Bobbysgirl19 Sun 04-Jun-17 23:29:57

Well said M0nica good post! I had to look up at the title of the thread at one stage to remind myself which thread I was reading. I thought I may have somehow wandered into the politics forum!!

MaizieD Sun 04-Jun-17 23:29:25

Incidentally, why did all the news reports tell us that May was briefing Trump about the London attack? Why not our European neighbours? I found that very strange.

MaizieD Sun 04-Jun-17 23:25:38

Just found this on Twitter:

twitter.com/evanmcmurry/status/871358001541595137

Some discussion at White House of possible London trip later in week to show solidarity after attacks

It's got to be a joke, surely? Presidential visits require hundreds of police (and months of planning).

What a brilliant notion; tie up our security forces chasing after the Orange One just when we're all on edge and need the protection they offer us. angry

durhamjen Sun 04-Jun-17 23:19:58

By the way, RAF, the minutes silence was for London as well.

durhamjen Sun 04-Jun-17 23:15:42

They probably got more than that as they were dastardly.

MawBroon Sun 04-Jun-17 23:13:24

Sorry. Serious thread.
Bad MawBroon (it is just one of my bêtes noires)

MaizieD Sun 04-Jun-17 23:07:43

Behave yourself, MawBroon!

MawBroon Sun 04-Jun-17 22:52:58

I hope they didn't get "just desserts " ??

durhamjen Sun 04-Jun-17 22:46:01

Are you telling MawBroon off, Monica?

durhamjen Sun 04-Jun-17 22:42:24

Grande shouted "Manchester we love you" before Black Eyed Peas' will.i.am said: "Manchester, London, we are here together and we are one."

The Red Cross were collecting for London at the concert.

M0nica Sun 04-Jun-17 22:38:30

Good God, is there no thread on GN that cannot be taken over by petty electoral politics.

This was a dastardly attack by evil minded people who got their just desserts. All over the world, if the victim descriptions are to be believed there are families mourning or worrying about family members who have been injured or killed. Even the political parties have said they would suspend campaigning today.

Surely for one day we could just think of the victims, praise the swiftness of the police response, think about the wider issues and stop all this JC/TM discussions about how many angels can dance on the head of a pin. It adds nothing to the sum human knowledge and reduces all those who suffered to political pawns in an election battle. They deserve better than that.

GracesGranMK2 Sun 04-Jun-17 22:36:09

It lasted until May made her speech on the steps of No 10 Maw, when she decided to say much more than she had to and make it an election speech.

As it was Corbyn's speech was not given until the evening as agreed between the parties (you can see the embargo time at the top). So Corbyn stood by the agreement but May did not. Perhaps a little truth helps us see who made the agreement last.

May is desperate to hang on to the UKIP voters and that was almost certainly her reason for making the speech she did and also for puffing herself up by taking to the lectern on the steps of No 10. I don't think we have ever seen a PM do this so often. A speech calmly made inside No 10 would seem to me to be much more appropriate.

Tegan2 Sun 04-Jun-17 22:14:45

I guess the problem is that Theresa May obviously had to make a statement this morning but that did come across as electioneering even if it was unintentional. I believe that the Corbyn statement wasn't released until after 7 o'clock. At the end of the day, given the fact that we're so close to the brexit negotiations plus the fact that there are so many awful things happening at the moment it really isn't a very sensible time to have a general election is it and it's hard not to question the reason for Theresa May to do so.

RAF Sun 04-Jun-17 22:13:58

Just watched the Ariana Grande concert, very moving, just a bit surprised that no mention was made of London, we are suffering too

Luckygirl Sun 04-Jun-17 22:12:27

I think you will find that TM did a bit of electioneering of her own outside No. 10 and took advantage of her position to break that agreement.

MawBroon Sun 04-Jun-17 22:04:54

I thought Corbyn was suspending electioneering (and that includes speeches) for today out or respect. confused
That didn't last long then.

GracesGranMK2 Sun 04-Jun-17 22:02:27

I'm sorry if someone has already put this on. This was what - Peter Kirkham, former Senior Investigating Officer, the Met had to say in an interview on Sky News.

"The police service is in crisis because of the cuts. They're being dragged from pillar to post. We hear talk of extra police officers on the streets. They're not extra. They're police officers who've had their rare leave days cancelled, they've had their 12 hour shifts, that are now routinely extended to 16 hours, they're being drawn from other areas."

GracesGranMK2 Sun 04-Jun-17 21:55:30

Maisie, I had a quick look and I can't believe there aren't even enough police dogs! Not enough police, not enough helicopters and not even enough dogs! It sounds like final straw time.

durhamjen Sun 04-Jun-17 21:34:31

That could explain this, GracesGran.

I await a message from Gove saying he made a mistake telling us we could look at skwawkbox.
