Irony of all ironies! The Tories warned that voting Labour would lead to a minority Labour government propped up by the SNP. And what do we have today? A minority Tory government propped up by a D.U.P. with a vastly different agenda to most MPs, let alone us the electorate.

It would have been better to have limped on vote by vote as John Major did than get into bed with the DUP.

I was just asking what the position is about Scottish votes on laws that only apply to England, because the Scottish conservatives, with Ruth Davidson as their head, might be able to clip TM's wings. If TM has 10 DUP's and Davidson has 12 members, then those 12 might be able to sway things if TM gets a bit out of hand.

I was not propounding a view about the voting system, but merely seeking the benefit of others' superior knowledge and had not expected to fire off a nationalist rant! Sigh.

I view with great delight the fact that Ruth Davidson has asked for reassurances about Gay Rights from TM. But Alistair Campbell's question about NI government is really crucial, How can the conservative gov remain as the mediator between the political parties at Stormont when they are effectively in bed with one of them?
This association with the DUP is a figment of TMs imagination. Bt it might have dire consequences.

I recall her saying, "If I lose just six seats, I lose the election". Well, by her own assessment, she has lost and this is how she seeks to divert attention from her statement.

There must be many Tories who don't like this alliance with the D.U.P. It can only be a matter of time until someone ousts her I think. She has no authority/credibility left, and you can be damn sure nobody in the EU is going to respect her after this. She couldn't bring herself to talk on Woman's Hour, how is she going to deal with the EU negotiators?

I think the problem with Sottish, Welsh or NI MPs voting on purely English matters was/is the bone of contention - not anything which affects more than one 'section' of the U.K.. There are certain areas where each of the countries - except England - get to vote on things which ONLY affect their country - therefore right that the MPs from those countries do not vote on issues which ONLY affect England. Of course as Wales is in a slightly different position - the Welsh MPs would vote on the issues which affect Wales as well as England. There was talk of altering things so that purely English MPs voted on English things - I know that some MPs in the other countries did this anyway by themselves.
This could affect both the DUP voting on some things as well as the Sottish Conservatives.

Apparently, the numbers mean that the Conservatives benefit from EVEL, because they have a very solid majority in England.

The two big areas where EVEL matters are healthcare and education, because both have been devolved.

I'd have to check this, because I'm not entirely sure, but I believe issues such as same sex marriage haven't been devolved, but when the Act was drawn up, an exception was made for NI. Therefore, NI MPs can still vote on LGBT and abortion issues, etc.

There's a list somewhere with the issues which are affected.

The bone of contention was Scottish MPs voting on tuition fees for English students in the Blair government. Ironically, the Scottish Labour MPs defied the party whip and voted against introducing them in England.

The Scottish parliament then voted not to introduce fees, but the Scottish MPs had no voice in that.

The result is that Westminster MPs from Scotland, Wales and NI don't have a say in how the education and healthcare systems in their own countries are run, which is a bit silly.

PS. I didn't realise that Welsh MPs are in a different situation from Scottish MPs. It seems even sillier.
