Arlene Foster one half of Northern Ireland’s power-sharing executive, faced calls to resign after she was implicated in a £400M scandal, in which the party administered a scheme handing out money to businesses, ostensibly for renewable fuel purchases, but which frequently turned out to be fraudulent. She refused to step down and that's when her republican then-counterpart, Martin McGuinness, quit in protest — and the devolved government collapsed. Politics in Belfast has been particularly embittered ever since and looks poised to take a huge step because of agreement to form a coalition with Westminster Tories. Not sure how the DUP's so called Kingmaker role will play out, but I hope this does not stir up the 'troubles' again.
