Chief Executive has resigned - SJ told him to go he says. Good. Now let's see the leader do the honourable thing.

durham and ww it is becoming increasingly obvious to me, and am sure to others that whatever I say on any thread, however resonable, is met by constant and personal attacks.

Give it a rest!

By the way, Laura Pidcock's mother is a waspi, for anyone interested.

Austerity kills.
Homeless die.

durhamjen Sat 01-Jul-17 14:52:36

Speeches now, roses.
You really ought to listen; you could learn something about how others have to live.

whitewave Sat 01-Jul-17 14:50:32

No doubt rose you would agree with the snooty Tory councillor that really having ones rent taken from ones bank statement in error is a only a tiny worry!!

durhamjen Sat 01-Jul-17 14:31:18

Trust you to stick up for the Tory.
It's not rocket science to stop the payments. They have a whole housing office to do that.

rosesarered Sat 01-Jul-17 14:27:46

Isn't the protest led by McDonnell and the peoples assembly to stop austerity, not protesters about the fire tragedy? Or is it both?

Although it does seem insensitive ( rent deducted) surely this is simply computers, money taken by direct debit, I imagine there may also be BT and Sky and utilities bills ( deducted) if residents set them up to be paid this way they would continue until they are cancelled by residents.

Hoping protests are non violent too, a quiet dignified protest can be more hard hitting than one which descends into looting and rampaging.

durhamjen Sat 01-Jul-17 14:25:58

Even the BBC and Sky are covering the march. They must think this one is important.
Not one day more!

WilmaKnickersfit Sat 01-Jul-17 14:19:24

Yes, I am hoping the protests don't turn violent dj, fingers crossed. Sometimes though, it does get the message through.

durhamjen Sat 01-Jul-17 14:13:05

The protests are today, wilma. Many of the posters are asking for justice for Grenfell.

whitewave Sat 01-Jul-17 14:05:04

They have behaved with tragic dignity. But if there was civil unrest who would blame them?

WilmaKnickersfit Sat 01-Jul-17 13:58:01

I get that they're defending their corner and maybe we'll find out they tried their best in the circumstances, but I don't think they realise how inflammatory some of their words are.

I must admit I am very surprised there hasn't been violent protests. We've seen it before when people felt let down by officialdom and the Grenfell tragedy is by far the worst thing in years (not meaning to compare, but hopefully you know what I mean).

whitewave Sat 01-Jul-17 13:50:33

On a Newsnight one day this week there were two survivors saying what they wanted from the judge and his investigation . What they did say -and I suspect this Is true of a lot of rented places in London and possibly elsewhere.
The flats were being managed with the intention of running them down to sell off at a massive profit. The poor shoved out and the wealthy moved into eye watering lay expensive property.

What sort of country do we want?

I think it. Is time to decide. I think we can give a guess what the Female Tory councillor wants.

Iam64 Sat 01-Jul-17 13:47:25

I heard the 'perceived failings' with incredulity and anger..
I heard the female counncillOr make the comment about having rent deducted despite the home being destroyed, I was stunned and angry.
The response of KandC council from day one has been scandalous. All l.a.s have emergency/disaster plans. Many regulars here will have been involved in the plannng in one role or another and watched the incompetence, arrogant response of this council with horror.
Its impossible not to conclude the conservative council has neither any understanding or compassion for the residents.

grumppa Sat 01-Jul-17 13:32:41

I agree, whitewave. The Kensington woman's performance on Today this morning was unbelievable - arrogant, insensitive, and occasionally plain stupid. But that has been the standard of communication from the Council from day one.

The only valid point she made, that this was too big an event for a local council to handle by itself, should have been made early on, with thanks to all the volunteer organisations and individuals who had stepped in immediately, and a plea for understanding and an assurancecthstbcouncil staff were working their socks off. Mentioning the point now, in the way she did, cut no ice at all.

There's a 38 degrees petition at the end of it.

Just read this.

Because some of the survivors still dare not come forward because they are frightened of being sent back home.

durhamjen Sat 01-Jul-17 11:45:37

His double barrelled underling is leaving as well. Hope they are replaced with a normal Brown, Smith or Jones, or do you have to be double barrelled to get to the top in Kensington and Chelsea.

durhamjen Sat 01-Jul-17 11:19:46

Paget Brown said he was departing to accept some responsibility for “perceived failings” by the council.

Perceived failings?
Not real failings, then, it's just a matter of perception.

Not sure the government taking over will be any better. The London Assembly could, though.

whitewave Sat 01-Jul-17 08:56:07

I suspect that the Tories are busy trying to bury the intention of "making a bonfire of regulations"

Ironic in the circumstances.

whitewave Sat 01-Jul-17 08:21:22

Kensington councillor on radio 4.

I have never heard anything like it in my life!!!!! She is blaming the survivors, the press, the "complexity etc. It is absolutely outrageous.

One survivor has just had heard bank card/ statement back and her rent has been taken from Grenfell. The councillor said "oh come on that is a tiny thing"

There is a suggestion that there may be civil unrest -is anyone surprised!?

durhamjen Fri 30-Jun-17 17:56:01

I agree, rigby, that's a police matter.
My husband was responsible for CDM in his company, so I know a bit about it. It only came in in 1994, I think. The 2007 changes were to bring it all together, and decide who was ultimately responsible for any health and safety issues, but he wasn't working by then.
One of the first things I thought was it was a CDM issue, but as I hadn't seen it anywhere else, I assumed I must be wrong.
