Chief Executive has resigned - SJ told him to go he says. Good. Now let's see the leader do the honourable thing.

Rigby46 Mon 26-Jun-17 17:17:25

It's a good detractor isn't it?

whitewave Mon 26-Jun-17 17:14:10

There is such appalling incompetence they haven't a clue who was in the flats, so to suggest that they were full of illegal immigrants is ridiculous

durhamjen Mon 26-Jun-17 17:13:13

They could have been living with legal immigrants, friends who were there legally? Sleeping on the settee or on the floor?
Nobody knows whether there were any illegal immigrants there. It's something put out by the MSM just to demonise people.

Rigby46 Mon 26-Jun-17 17:11:20

If there were illegal immigrants , they were probably paying their rent by working in shit awful conditions being exploited appallingly

Daddima Mon 26-Jun-17 17:03:13

Here's something which puzzles me; it has been reported that there may have been illegal immigrants living in the flats, and they have been asked to come forward. If that is the case, who was paying their rent, as , contrary to what some sections of the press would have us believe, they do not receive free houses, and cannot claim benefits?

durhamjen Mon 26-Jun-17 16:51:02

Does anyone know when English rules deviated from Scottish?

Alima Mon 26-Jun-17 16:14:41

Breaking news, the cladding firm have ended global sales. As it should do.

whitewave Mon 26-Jun-17 15:49:44

rose our argument is that the government was, until last week preparing to water down all these rules, it still has no intention of forcing them on private landlords.

We aren't arguing about sprinklers etc. They should come with the health and safety rules if they were properly enforced

mcem Mon 26-Jun-17 15:23:39

Perhaps if Tory (landlord) mp's hadn't voted down proposals to make all rented properties fit for human habitation, we wouldn't need to ask such questions.

We should be able to take for granted that L.A. housing is safe and that appropriate. rules should be applied in privately rented properties but we can't.

The combination of money-grabbing landlords and a Tory government determined to cut regulation has brought us to this.

I appreciate that many good landlords are well aware of the safety of their tenants and don't include them in blanket criticism.

durhamjen Mon 26-Jun-17 15:22:22

How many people complained about there being too much elf and safety?
You were one of them, I am sure, roses.

Rigby46 Mon 26-Jun-17 15:14:02

The government wanted less regulation for new build schools - it removed the requirement for sprinklers. Now backtracked of course but bless - I don't suppose they really understood the implications the first time round. #safeintheirhsnds

rosesarered Mon 26-Jun-17 14:59:19

Are there any private very high rise buildings? If so, do they have sprinkler systems or any other fire precautions? It may not just be a matter of cladding.

whitewave Mon 26-Jun-17 14:51:48

In fact it is still saying that private landlords can choose shock

whitewave Mon 26-Jun-17 14:51:08

The government did. It has just done a panicked u-turn

rosesarered Mon 26-Jun-17 14:48:30

ww nobody who wants less regulation wants them for serious matters such as fire and safety regulations.

rosesarered Mon 26-Jun-17 14:46:24

Interesting post Granny23 and yes, we should have the same stringent tests and regs as Scotland, and hopefully it will be looked at now with new eyes as it were.

durhamjen Mon 26-Jun-17 13:41:15

This is interesting. A public health inspector who said they used to be able to decide whether to inspect places. Now it's just retro-active, when people complain.
They have shut down housing because of fire risk, but were usually called in because the houses were damp or had other problems. Nobody sees a fire risk normally. The people of Grenfell Tower did, so should have been listened to, instead of being seen as nuisances and threatened.

It's a question of austerity.
It's the same with trading standards, everything done on complaint rather than looking at a problem as a whole.

durhamjen Mon 26-Jun-17 13:25:39

Better than being burnt to death.
I hope the inquiry will tell us when, how and why the rules were changed.
Where was the Building Research Establishment in all this?

whitewave Mon 26-Jun-17 13:23:41

dj I can remember many comments about unnecessary bureaucracy and regulation particularly when we leave Europe.

So I wonder now how many people thought they were voting for a low tax, low welfare, low regulation economy? Because that is what individuals like Dacre, Murdoch, Banks and Farage as well of a few Tories are fighting for.

whitewave Mon 26-Jun-17 13:19:03

Those poor souls from Camden are being treated like cattle.

durhamjen Mon 26-Jun-17 13:09:36

Who now will admit to having said that health and safety regulations are too strict?

Eloethan Mon 26-Jun-17 12:56:13

Perhaps it's a combination of shoddy goods and a reduction in regulation and staff to enforce regulation.

I really don't understand how, when there is a known history of certain domestic appliances (and cars) exploding or catching fire, there isn't a law to enforce their recall. I hope I'm wrong but I suspect that at the moment manufacturers use actuarial data to weigh up whether to risk bearing the cost of settling claims for death or injury in order to save the perhaps far greater cost of recalling, repairing or replacing goods.

Jalima1108 Mon 26-Jun-17 12:52:18

I don't know, perhaps we didn't hear about them but I never remember hearing about fridges that caught fire or even tumble driers.

devongirl Mon 26-Jun-17 12:50:15

Jalima I suspect these apparently more frequent fires are the result of manufacturers cutting costs, although I'm sure such things must have happened previously, maybe we didn't hear about them?
