I can't find the thread on this - probably a zombie one by now, they've been going on so long!

It's all gone very quiet - maybe the DUP have again stopped taking phone calls from their 'confidence & supply' partners.

Anyone heard anything?

I hope you are prepared to offer 1 Billion if you want support on all of your suggestions Barmyoldbat!

Barmyoldbat Tue 27-Jun-17 18:26:15

Good post Luckygirl, with you all the way. Just going to have a family meeting on where to go for a family weekend, will offer my son some money to agree with my views! ,

newnanny Tue 27-Jun-17 18:25:31

But she does has majority now with guarantee of DUP votes.

durhamjen Tue 27-Jun-17 18:21:04

I was surprised it was the Times that called it a bung.
Is May losing her friends in MSM?

durhamjen Tue 27-Jun-17 18:17:46

think-left.org/2017/06/27/a-message-for-mrs-may-re-dup-agreement/

Do you reckon Mayhem will take any notice?

Newnanny, there isn't a majority government. That's the whole point.
May had a majority government until she held the election.
Did you not notice?

newnanny Tue 27-Jun-17 18:14:36

Surely no one would want another General Election with clock ticking away on Brexit. So really party with most seats securing majority government only way to go until Brexit is complete.

newnanny Tue 27-Jun-17 18:11:43

Sinn Fein will have to agree how money is spent if power sharing agreement is made in NI.If not then DUP will not decide either as power reverts to Westminster. Schools, NHS and transpoert infrastructure will benefit all of NI not just DUP areas.

whitewave Tue 27-Jun-17 18:10:48

No the main point is whether they are buying votes. Or bribery or corruption.

Baggs Tue 27-Jun-17 18:09:18

on

Baggs Tue 27-Jun-17 18:09:01

The main difference in views here seems to be about whether such political deals are despicable or not. Some think not, others think they are. That's all there is to it really and, after all, the deal is done and there's nothing we can do about it except rage.

So, rage one, sweeties.

durhamjen Tue 27-Jun-17 18:08:08

Agreed, Luckygirl. The bung is to the party as that is the only party which agrees with the Tory minority government. I don't think you can say that Sinn Fein agree with the DUP just so they can get extra money.

whitewave Tue 27-Jun-17 18:07:37

So how would you describe what has happened

Baggs Tue 27-Jun-17 18:06:11

I expect not, ww.

Baggs Tue 27-Jun-17 18:05:25

Oh dear, indeed, ww. My point exactly many times but always misunderstood.

whitewave Tue 27-Jun-17 18:05:17

Can you tell me baggs would this money have been paid if May had not done a deal?

Baggs Tue 27-Jun-17 18:03:16

The bung is to the region, * lucky*, not one of its Parties.

whitewave Tue 27-Jun-17 18:03:13

Oh dear

Baggs Tue 27-Jun-17 18:02:02

I thought many on the political threads never believed Tories had any soul. In which case, nothing is sold. I thought they were all evil sods, according to the leftmost gransnet tribe.

Luckygirl Tue 27-Jun-17 18:00:02

Parties do deals in order to bolster their position when parliament is a close run thing. And - as when we had a coalition - this is not necessarily a bad thing because it can temper the government's more excessive plans. But these are national parties representing folk from the whole of GB.

What is so wrong here is that May is delivering a very very large bung to a party representing a particular area which will get a disproportionate share of the money available and will be able to hold May and her cronies to ransom over more favours and skew votes in favour of political policies that are seriously regressive, not to say archaic and fly in the face of reason.

It is wrong on all counts.

rosesarered Tue 27-Jun-17 17:58:10

Am actually doubting how political you are Maizie..... sure you can shout and swear on GN but all that shows is immaturity.
If Corbyn had to cut a deal with the SNP, you think they would have asked fornothing ?

Barmyoldbat Tue 27-Jun-17 17:55:34

Despite the DUP getting money towards their NHS they have agreed to allow women to travel to Britain for an abortion which no doubt will be paid for by us or will we be sending them an invoice?

MaizieD Tue 27-Jun-17 17:44:31

It seems there is a lot of 'shock' expressed here, and yet most posters say they are very political and follow politics avidly! Amazing

And those of us who do are mostly saying that such blatant bribery is not common practice. Really, the tories have plumbed a new low in politics.

JC would have had to do much the same for Scotland if he had been making up numbers, and as already stated, bribes and corruption is when the money is spent personally by somebody, and not when it's going on schools, hospitals etc.

You don't have a clue what Corbyn might or might not have done whereas we know exactly what May has done.

Calm down
F Off roses

newnanny Tue 27-Jun-17 17:30:01

The main thing is we have majority government for the term of Brexit. It is less than two years away and a lot to do before then. Also DUP forced May to abandon Triple Lock and winter fuel payments to pensioners not living just on benefits, so all good imho.

Smileless2012 Tue 27-Jun-17 17:27:12

Well as you say, you're making a presumption that Labour during it's talks with the DUP were asked for more than they could "possibly stomach". None of us can say for sure just how sensitive the Labour Party's stomach is of course.

So, if the Gov. had secured a deal with the DUP without a 'bribe', would you have found it acceptable all be it distasteful? I'm still trying to get you to answer my question.

Thank you for your answer whitewave

rosesarered Tue 27-Jun-17 17:21:17

Exactly newnanny and smileless
