Very much needed.

First happy thing to report.

Unison have won their case making it illegal to charge employees for employment litigation. Introduced by the Tories in 2013.

The judges quite rightly said it was wrong to make it difficult/impossible for anyone to resort to law.

Those who paid will be reimbursed.

That's truly disgraceful sad.

durhamjen Thu 19-Oct-17 20:04:58

Not unexpected, though.
This makes interesting reading. A performance tracker for the government.

Looking at Jess and Jen's post you feel something should be organised so that the regions get together and tackle this and don't let them buy the loudest shouters off.

durhamjen Thu 19-Oct-17 22:54:24

Is this really on in Brighton next month, whitewave?

durhamjen Fri 20-Oct-17 16:40:33

Some good news. MPs have voted through the emergency workers bill.

whitewave Fri 20-Oct-17 16:42:50

dj grin I don’t know -we do have the Komedia so perhaps it’s there.

durhamjen Fri 20-Oct-17 17:22:16

That's where The Treason Show was based, whitewave. I think it's a bit of artistic licence, though. Same as this.

durhamjen Sat 21-Oct-17 17:05:16

Just to make some people happy.

We can but hope dj

The Conservative Party exists for a reason. The most successful political party in the history of democracy has, for centuries, served the sole purpose of preserving the interests of wealth. I stress that when saying so I am not suggesting that is exists between to serve the interests of business, as it would like many to believe, but wealth. This is the party of the rentier, not the business person.

Always something that adds to the picture as a whole - thank you Jen. The Tory economic failure is plain for all to see and now the idea that they are the party of business is beginning to be exploded. It is sad that those who are on the edge financially are still having to suffer but this but hopefully this government will be gone sooner rather than later.

Sir Keir Starmer has laid some red lines down in defence of our democracy.

Good

durhamjen Sun 22-Oct-17 10:11:07

Hope he sticks to them, and this.

" MPs get the “final say on whether to approve the withdrawal agreement and how best to implement it”.
The transition period requested by the prime minister is added into the legislation.
A “completely different approach” to the use of so-called Henry VIII powers which the government argues it needs to make technical changes to regulations repatriated from Brussels, but which Starmer described as “silencing parliament and handing sweeping powers” to ministers.
A guarantee that workers’ and consumer rights, as well as environmental standards, are not watered down after Brexit.
A concession to devolved administrations which want repatriated powers that would normally fall under their remit to go straight to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, rather than first being taken over by the Westminster government.
Putting the EU charter of fundamental rights into UK law."

They all sound quite reasonable.

whitewave Sun 22-Oct-17 10:35:33

I want a guarantee relating to the various environmental protocols.

durhamjen Sun 22-Oct-17 10:49:01

Hopefully all those MPs who say now they will back Starmer and not pass May's catchall deal will stick to their guns this time, whitewave. Unfortunately, history shows it is not so, as the UC vote showed.

whitewave Sun 22-Oct-17 14:15:33

I know dj they need to stiffen their sinews.

People don’t seem to have any integrity these days.

durhamjen Sun 22-Oct-17 16:31:14

Have you noticed that housing is now flavour of the day?
Tories are saying it would be a good idea to build lots of social houses now as interest rates are so low.
I wonder which expert they are listening to today?
They have been told that for years, but are now in listening mode, just as the Bank of England are saying that interest rates will have to rise!

durhamjen Sun 22-Oct-17 16:33:03

Now I know why.

www.24housing.co.uk/news/labour-secures-opposition-day-debate-on-supported-housing/

durhamjen Sun 22-Oct-17 16:52:22

It's a con anyway. The Tories are going to have an 8 week review, by which time the interest rates will have risen and they will be able to say they can't afford it. They promised £2 billion to build 25,000 new homes. That's £80,000 per house.
Anyone know where you can get a new house for that money?

I see the BBC has been criticised by an overseeing committee for allowing Lawson to spout his rubbish, denying climate change without challenge on more than one occasion.

This will now stop hopefully.

whitewave Wed 25-Oct-17 08:17:29

Universities minister busy trying to explain away the McCarthyist letter sent by a Tory MP - grin. Yet another idiot trying to suggest he has more knowledge than the experts.

I see that Cambridge students are using their market forces to demand a less colonialistic tendency in the teaching and introduction of more black writers, for balance. They pay 9k a year so I think they are entitled to complain.

Showing the amount of influence that the Murdoch press has over worldwide press.
What's very interesting is that it's the Times group that is copied wholesale by US press.
