Very much needed.

First happy thing to report.

Unison have won their case making it illegal to charge employees for employment litigation. Introduced by the Tories in 2013.

The judges quite rightly said it was wrong to make it difficult/impossible for anyone to resort to law.

Those who paid will be reimbursed.

The modern day shipwrecker, Katie Hopkins.

durhamjen
Katie Hopkins is an easy target for you, but I note that you haven't spoken about Italy prosecuting NGOs with assisting illegal immigrants.

durhamjen Sat 05-Aug-17 22:41:36

Possibly because it isn't in the papers I read.
Is that the first time you have mentioned it?

Tegan2 Sat 05-Aug-17 23:10:13

Katie Hopkins deserves to be a target for decent person methinks. I despair of living in a country where people give her the time of day.

durhamjen Sat 05-Aug-17 23:22:06

Huffpost is on an NGO boat which is off the Libyan coast trying to save refugees from drowning.
C-Star, the boat that has been hired by a rightwing group supported by Katie Hopkins is trying to stop the NGO boats from picking up refugees.
I despair of rightwing groups that do things like this. Obviously petra knows more about these people than I do.

durhamjen Sat 05-Aug-17 23:24:44

Of course, if governments did what they were supposed to do, there would be no need for NGOs to have boats in the area.

Has anyone read Jamie Olivers interview in todays Times magazine? He's absolutely furious with Theresa May and, even though he has always aimed to be apolitical [is that the right term?] he said he voted against the government this time and he has never voted before. It's all about the policy he developed with Cameron regarding childhood obesity and, as he's said before, May is the only PM that has taken no interest in his attempts to make our children healthier.

durhamjen Mon 07-Aug-17 11:54:56

Not surprising really. Parents trying to keep their children fed, let alone healthily, doesn't rate highly with May.

Just seen this. Serves him right.

"A tax expert, Professor Richard Murphy from City, University of London has joined the Technical Committee of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) project. He will provide expertise to develop new standards for the ways businesses report their payments to governments which will be incorporated into the GRI Standards. According to GRI, there is increasing pressure on big organisations to reveal more about their payments to governments. “Greater transparency can be one tool to help ensure public and stakeholder confidence that companies employ fair tax strategies and demonstrate their contributions to society in the regions where they operate”, stated the project proposal, which hopes to provide guidance that goes beyond any new legal rules. Professor Murphy is credited as the creator of country-by-country reporting, which is now being promoted by the OECD to improve tax transparency for multinational corporations."

Something else for the government to think about, as well as Brexit.

Anybody got any gold bullion under the bed?

“We haven’t put forward a lot because, as we know, there are differences within the cabinet about the sort of Brexit that we are heading for and until those differences are further resolved I think it’s very difficult for us to have a clear position,” said Fraser, who now advises businesses on Brexit"
...this is very reassuring, isn't it. so much for taking back control...it seems it's just the government that are deciding what's going to happen, except for the fact that they haven't agreed amongst themselves what it is yet...

Further to durhamjen 's comment re the selling off of NHS Professionals, here is an article from Global Research which contains some very alarming information re the privatisation of a multitude of services, which is gathering apace and the latest of which is the Court bailiff service.

www.globalresearch.ca/you-wont-believe-what-the-british-government-is-about-to-privatise-next/5603229

It is easy to sell of all the assets of a country for short term gain. But if, using the household analogy that the Conservatives are so fond of, you sold off everything in your home that enabled you to live safely and productively most people would think it a pretty short-sighted and stupid thing to do.

Welshwife Wed 09-Aug-17 10:46:54

You just couldn't make it up! 50 years ago if the privatising of all those bodies had been forecast it would never have been believed that any Govt could be so stupid and short sighted.

durhamjen Wed 09-Aug-17 12:29:37

"The “Still Too Poor to Pay” report said some boroughs had even introduced charges for disabled and unemployed residents for the first time. This pushed more than 131,000 London households into arrears last year. Where bailiffs are used, their fees are added to a claimant’s council tax arrears — which the charities said meant “inflating the debt and making it harder for households to repay”.

In the eyes of profiteers, there’s money to be made from debt, especially from the poor. Privatisation of the court bailiff system is like privatising parking enforcement – and look where that led – scandal after scandal. The civilianisation of law enforcement has always proved to be much worse than when managed by government with civilian scrutiny. This, like so many other privatisation projects this will end in failure with the over-stretched citizenry shouldering the burden of government incompetence and the poor exploited even further."

From Eloethan's link.

Anyone concerned about all the privatisation go to weownit and sign up to everything you can to try and stop it.
A few million more signatures would be very useful.

Did Brexiteers really think the government was going to let the British people take back control?

durhamjen Wed 09-Aug-17 12:34:30

An interesting update. Weownit has been blocked by various stakeholders in the selloff of NHSP.

weownit.org.uk/nhsp-no-sale

So you'll have to email separately from now on.
At least they know weownit exists.

durhamjen Wed 09-Aug-17 13:51:00

The government has woken up at last to the problems of staffing the NHS.

www.gov.uk/government/news/1500-extra-medical-undergraduate-places-confirmed

How long does it take to train a doctor?

GracesGranMK2 Wed 09-Aug-17 13:57:04

Thanks for the information Jen.

durhamjen Wed 09-Aug-17 14:04:10

And I've just read this as well, and it's made me so angry.

My MP has signed EDM 152 to try and stop the government selling off NHSP.
Do any of you know if yours has?
