As Newcastle gets £500000 ot fight right wing extremism
www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/right-wing-edl-newcastle-racism-13402419
there is also news that the cities 2 universities are still attracting EU students and there are increasing numbers of students from the Middle and Far East coming here. Will the money really help? And what can be done to mend a fractured society? When I see the EDL demonstrating and yelling in a city centre crowded with all nationalities I can only see more trouble ahead. Can you educate people to understand the benefits these students bring?

Anniebach Tue 08-Aug-17 14:23:14

For me it's hypocritical to oppose grammar schools on the grounds that they devide children yet support selective schools for your own children. Emily T was asked and ger reply - I want best education for my children and the best education for all children.

Surely parents who want grammar schools want what they think is best for their children.

I am against grammar schools before I am accused of supporting them.

I have the same problem with Corbyn, he is against the House of Lords yet shoots Shami off there for a few weeks work as a labour party member

A little bit against perhaps

maryeliza54 Tue 08-Aug-17 14:23:00

I suppose the issue is whether what you choose for yourself/ your family is at odds with what is party policy. So selective education is a clear issue for Labour politicians.

MaizieD Tue 08-Aug-17 14:22:15

I'm sure that a great many Labour voters send their children to selective schools, too. It's not a crime. Though it's clearly a crime against the Labour movement in the eyes of many of the posters on here.

As is, apparently, Home Educating a child. Also perfectly legal.

Roll on the Revolution, eh? When all citizens live by the code of conduct decided by a committee of censorious grannies and are thrown into outer darkness if they deviate by so much as a millimetre.

maryeliza54 Tue 08-Aug-17 14:18:04

It's not Labour policy to do away with private schools - it's the selective issue - I think that's why Primrose said DA was worse

maryeliza54 Tue 08-Aug-17 14:16:00

It wasn't a private school for ET it was a partially selective and she must have thought it better

Jalima1108 Tue 08-Aug-17 14:14:30

It must be hard for some Labour politicians balancing their beliefs and what's best for their children.
Why should a private school be a better choice and best for their children?

If private schools are better and a Labour politician sends their children to one why would they want to do away with them?
confused

maryeliza54 Tue 08-Aug-17 14:11:35

Yes two of her three children. That's a real issue for me - I suppose a Labour politician has far more hurdles to jump not to be a hypocrite. If a Tory MP defended private education but sent his children to state school, that would be fine because he can do that but still believe in private education. It must be hard for some Labour politicians balancing their beliefs and what's best for their children. But obviously not true for most

devongirl Tue 08-Aug-17 13:42:30

Thanks for your reply, Annie

Primrose65 Tue 08-Aug-17 13:27:22

It's not just one tweet Maizie

She sent her children to selective schools, which I suppose is better than Abbott but not what she preaches

She is a hypocrite.

MaizieD Tue 08-Aug-17 13:12:01

@maryeliza

Just to backtrack a bit (I've been out shopping), this is about Thornberry's tweet.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-30142579

It amazed me at the time and still amazes me; how much can be read into three words and a picture.

Anniebach Tue 08-Aug-17 12:59:53

devongirl, I did reply to your question, I always reply if asked with courtesy.

I don't give thought to a different labour leader now, the far left has it in the bag,

When Milliband stood for leadership I voted for Andy Burnham.

When Corbyn stood i was going to vote for Yvette Cooper, changed my mind , had discussed it here with posters I believed to be socialist so voted for Corbyn, I was stupidly taken in by far left militants and didn't know Corbyn was a hypocrite who wanted to destroy the Labour Party and replace it with a communistq party.

Anniebach Tue 08-Aug-17 12:49:35

Give it some thought is the best advice I can offer maryeliza

maryeliza54 Tue 08-Aug-17 12:43:56

What do you mean? Why is faith different? I really don't understand at all? If there was no mocking at all of anyone's beliefs, that would be consistent but I don't understand why religious beliefs should be ring fenced.

Anniebach Tue 08-Aug-17 12:39:18

Very genuine maryeliza

Anniebach Tue 08-Aug-17 12:38:25

Teaching isn't a job Trisher?

maryeliza54 Tue 08-Aug-17 12:37:04

Another genuine question - I don't have a faith to be mocked but why should faith be treated differently from other beliefs? There is plenty of mocking of political beliefs from both sides that I can see.

trisher Tue 08-Aug-17 12:35:20

You have been asked about things Annie up till now you have been perfectly happy to post about your Labour credentials, your personal opinions and your background. Suddenly no-one has to ask.
And it isn't a question of there being no teachers (although there aren't and likely to be a lot less soon) Special needs education has been steadily eroded and reduced over the years because it costs a lot and education funding has been cut. Probably because people don't pay their proper taxes.
But also as I said 1 child does not equal 1 teacher so makes very little difference to the system
On the other hand 1 administrator is a job isn't it?

devongirl Tue 08-Aug-17 12:32:57

Annie, apologies for asking this again but I can't find my previous post, and therefore your answer. I know you don't like JC, now it's not clear that applies also to Emily Thornberry; as a labour party member, who would you like to see as leader of the party?

Anniebach Tue 08-Aug-17 12:29:03

Oops, but mocking my faith is low even for them.

Anniebach Tue 08-Aug-17 12:27:29

I'm not upset primrose, I knew when I posted about the properties the claws would be out, it gives them a way to defend dear Emily, they always use distraction .

Primrose65 Tue 08-Aug-17 12:18:22

It's rather ironic that personal attacks happen on a thread called 'A divided society, what can be done?' and the OP is one of the people who has upset you Annie

Anniebach Tue 08-Aug-17 11:58:43

Primrose , how lovely, how true, thank you.

Primrose65 Tue 08-Aug-17 11:53:23

Annie flowers

Anniebach Tue 08-Aug-17 11:51:11

But Trisher, are there no teachers who need the work .Jen is doing in her area ? If she is being paid then she isn't taking eno, oyment from anyone, as I have been accused of doing.

Anniebach Tue 08-Aug-17 11:48:02

Then Trisher I will await Jen to explain about her arrangements for teaching her grandson, she has spoken of it for years. Does she charge or is she doing a teacher out of a job or Tax Dodging? She is very concerned about education in this country. I too like openness and honesty .

I think this is fair, I have been accused of much in just one day.
