Sovereignty and 'take back control'

In view of developments in Parliament over the past few days, such as the 'Henry VII' clause in the Repeal Bill and moves to give the government a majority in House of Commons Select committees , I am wondering just what people who voted Leave understand by the concept of 'Sovereignty' and if they are at all worried by the Government's attempts to bypass Parliamentary scrutiny of legislation and amendments to legislation?

We should make them pay for it themselves.
There was absolutely no point in going to Florence to say that, and take her acolytes with her.
I wonder how much her junket cost us.

Just to spend our hard earned cash

Tegan2 Fri 22-Sept-17 17:33:41

Just got in and watching it on the telly. It could have been in a hall anywhere, so why did she have to go to Florence?

whitewave Fri 22-Sept-17 17:15:02

So what were we told?

lemongrove Fri 22-Sept-17 17:13:57

Everybody, including the EU.

whitewave Fri 22-Sept-17 17:12:17

Who needed it?

lemongrove Fri 22-Sept-17 17:10:27

Just watched it, thought it was an excellent speech and just what was needed at this point.?

whitewave Fri 22-Sept-17 17:05:31

I see May is trying to rewrite history. We have never been comfortable as being part of Europe.

Wonder what Churchill would say?

Welshwife Fri 22-Sept-17 16:54:03

Missed all that - have been travelling for a day and a half - catching up now.

UK has not paid extra money etc to the EU - each country pays 1% or 1.5% of GDP - same amount as everyone else and a fair way - countries who pay up the correct amount - pay 2% of GDP to NATO!

Greece and Italy are doing fairly well again now and of course the figures were all juggled to get admission into the EU.

Got to look up the speech now. Not seen any news since Wed evening!

durhamjen Fri 22-Sept-17 16:43:45

Yes, very good, as usual, at telling us what we wouldn't get, but couldn't say what we would get instead of Canada or Norway.

Barnier, "Needs to be turned into positive detail."

whitewave Fri 22-Sept-17 16:35:14

Watched it at Mums.

So no Canada, no Norway, no Irish border, stay as near to what we've got as possible, our courts will comply with ECJ.

We will continue to pay, and take part in the Single market etc.

So she said absolutely b--------r all.

Goodbye Hard Brexit.

durhamjen Fri 22-Sept-17 16:12:35

I like that. It's true.
I just heard a bit again about the EU residents living here. She said about the changes that will be made before the new regime. A strange word to use. It's normally used for authoritarian, oppressive governments.

Mamie Fri 22-Sept-17 15:48:29

I liked this Toby Helm tweet too.
"We are staying in the EU for two more years because we have no clue how to get out without doing untold damage."

Mamie Fri 22-Sept-17 15:43:17

No indeed, but first time she has said it.

durhamjen Fri 22-Sept-17 15:39:36

Nothing that we didn't know would have to happen, though.

No way could we get away with not paying bills, whatever some said.

Mamie Fri 22-Sept-17 15:37:49

I think this Dan Sabbagh tweet sums it up.
"May on Brexit: 2yr transition in which not much changes; plays security card with a treaty proposal; says we'll pay our bills until we quit."
I think there is some significant content there.

durhamjen Fri 22-Sept-17 15:29:47

Well, the speech is over, and I expected her to say we are going to stay in.
There was nothing new in it, as far as I could see. All warm words, and whitewash again.

whitewave Fri 22-Sept-17 11:26:43

Do the people of Florence or the world even care?

maryeliza54 Fri 22-Sept-17 11:08:46

Do the people in Florence know that Maizie?

MaizieD Fri 22-Sept-17 11:04:44

^ I do think that you would be hard pushed right now to find a Brexiter who thinks it is all going swimmingly and as easy as they made out pre referendum.^

Even on Gransnet? Surely not wink

MaizieD Fri 22-Sept-17 11:03:05

LOL!

BST, maryeliza

maryeliza54 Fri 22-Sept-17 10:55:53

Is that 2.15 British Summer Time or <holds nose> European Time?

whitewave Fri 22-Sept-17 10:54:20

Thanks maize

Just browsing twitter - I see Chapman is back. He reckons that in 18 months time you will be hard pushed to find anyone admitting to voting for Brexit.

Nor sure about that but I do think that you would be hard pushed right now to find a Brexiter who thinks it is all going swimmingly and as easy as they made out pre referendum.

MaizieD Fri 22-Sept-17 10:36:22

It's at 2.15 apparently, ww

whitewave Fri 22-Sept-17 10:10:16

What time is Maybots next attempt at trying to take control?

I have to go to Mums today so think I will miss it.
