This vid says a lot. Especially why the EU finds our government's attitude so incomprehensible

I think there is a forum asking for devolution for London.
There might even be a petition.

If London had devolution, that might be a good idea, because the rest of us could have our money back and not support the south so much.

GrandmaMoira Mon 09-Oct-17 10:17:09

When talking about devolution and the separate countries, as someone living in London, which is a global city, with a much larger population than Scotland, Wales or N Ireland, I feel London should have a lot more independence.
London also voted strongly Remain.

durhamjen Sun 08-Oct-17 22:55:28

Oh, and there should be proper devolution of powers. We would have to decide about transport, roads, education, the health and care service, etc., in all four separate countries, or decide that they should be truly federal.

durhamjen Sun 08-Oct-17 22:52:56

Yes, paddyann, but if England had a separate parliament where only English things were discussed, and Westminster could only discuss things that related to all four countries, wouldn't it make things more even and get rid of some of the anomalies and animosity?
We would then HAVE to separate out those things that were parochial from those that were truly uniting us.

paddyann Sun 08-Oct-17 22:46:36

DJ ENGLAND doesn't NEED its own parliament.Westminster is more than 80% English Mp's ,it makes it almost impossible for the other nations to get anything THEY want through parliament....and thats how WM likes it.Just watch them try to claw back the powers already devolved once Brexit happens. They dont like anyone having a say but them .62% of the Scottish vote was REMAIN yet we cant even have a voice in the discussions....thats Westminster saying we're second class citizens with no voice and it makes my and millions of others blood boil !

I think that your Mother was right about that JessM and further to that applies to any position in life, as well as politics.

lemongrove Sun 08-Oct-17 21:23:03

How many MP’s have gone straight from backbencher to Leader Of The Opposition, come to that.

durhamjen Sun 08-Oct-17 20:57:51

Curry didn't tell the whole truth, though, did she?
If she had, John Major would have been knifed as well.

JessM Sun 08-Oct-17 17:18:02

My late mother observed that when a female politician was having a rocky patch the knives would be drawn far faster than if the politician was a male. She was right about Edwina Curry and Thatcher. All Curry did was tell the truth. Imagine that! I think the only things delaying those Tory knives now are 1/ she could take the blame for the brexit disaster 2/ there are no strong candidates for a replacement 3/ they are terrified of an election. Not inconsiderable, so she might hang on in there despite the awful election and her weak and wobbly leadership.

durhamjen Sun 08-Oct-17 14:26:29

I wonder how many other MPs have gone straight from backbencher to Home Secretary?

GracesGranMK2 Sun 08-Oct-17 13:54:14

I must admit that I agree about her 'luck' with the cough, etc. If these things had not happened we would have had all the pundits reporting on the thinness of ideas in the speech and the fact they seemed to be offering Labour light.

Ilovecheese Sun 08-Oct-17 13:39:52

I bet he regrets a lot of things now.

durhamjen Sun 08-Oct-17 12:38:01

Yes, because it gave her the position she had.
She was also chosen by Cameron because they needed an expendable woman.

GracesGranMK2 Sun 08-Oct-17 12:34:04

In this government Jen?

durhamjen Sun 08-Oct-17 12:32:25

According to Andrew Rawnsley, the reason May is in the position she is in is because Nick Clegg turned down the position of home secretary. I bet he's regretting that now.

GracesGranMK2 Sun 08-Oct-17 11:09:49

The government is run by extreme capitalists who believe that nothing should fetter how capitalism works and will fight over the bodies of the old, the young, the poor, the less able and those in no position to create ANY capital for themselves to keep that mass of capital in their own hands. It is capital which keeps then nicely safe and very comfortable under such a lack of rules and regulations.

To expect people who watch while increasingly, companies create profit at the expense of the community, not creating profit that actually ultimately benefits the communities to behave in any way other than self-serving, in this case ignore the law to keep themselves in power, seems to me to be waiting for that mythical pig to fly over.

GracesGranMK2 Sun 08-Oct-17 10:55:43

The article in today's paper certainly takes this a step further in trying to uncover why May bowed to the tyranny of the very small majority. It won't tell us everything but it would be a case she has to answer - and about time too.

I would very happily pay into crowd-funding which uncovered and made the legal points clear - does anyone know if one exists.

durhamjen Sun 08-Oct-17 10:48:17

That and the fact that it's possibly an illegal government because May didn't have the DUP's backing when she went to tell the queen she had a government makes me feel quite hopeful again.

whitewave Sun 08-Oct-17 10:42:32

I think is a bit different as it is confirmation from Queen’s Council.

Clegg is also writing about it, and is certainly something that we should bear in mind if (almost certainly) Brexit is a total disaster.

We need a let out clause and I think most in Europe understand it exists, which is why Macron said what he said.

TriciaF Sun 08-Oct-17 10:38:35

Whitewave wrote
"The Guardian is reporting that May has received “secret” information saying that MPs could stop Brexit if it was thought to be not in the national interest."
Wasn't this mentioned and discussed months ago? ie the referendum result was advisory, not legally binding?
Going round in circles.

whitewave Sun 08-Oct-17 10:23:12

Clegg book might be worth a read -out next week I think

Mamie Sun 08-Oct-17 10:07:43

The main point I was trying to make was that all this talk of the imaginary horrors to come in the EU is displacement for thinking about the actual horrors of Brexit.

durhamjen Sun 08-Oct-17 10:00:37

300% tariffs on imported cars, Mamie?

durhamjen Sun 08-Oct-17 09:59:28

Did anyone notice that there is now a 300% tariff on Bombardier planes in the US, our best friend as far as trading in the future is concerned, as if 220% wasn't bad enough.

Mamie Sun 08-Oct-17 09:57:35

Exactly Jen, but if patriotism had ensured a massive demand for more British cars....?
