This as the Labour Party conference , a momentum fringe meeting.

Corbyn attended Momentum fringe invites but turned down Friends of Israel invite.

Very Donald Trump isn't it?

lemongrove Thu 14-Dec-17 13:02:56

Am surprised he showed his face there Primrose !

Primrose65 Thu 14-Dec-17 13:16:24

Yes, it was a first I believe. I think it was to reinforce his public statement that he did not agree with the boycott of goods from Israel.
I think he has a bit more legwork to do though, considering Emily Thornberry had to apologise to the Israeli ambassador last year when he compared Israel to Isis.

Do stop playing the nazi card, if you cannot admit the link was showing the enthusiasm of youth thinking of a new world of promise , it is a film , it is of a time before the war , there were young people in Germany who believed the promise of a new world where they would benefit ,

GracesGranMK2 Thu 14-Dec-17 15:02:29

This has to be the saddest thread on GN.

nigglynellie Thu 14-Dec-17 15:29:44

annie's quite right, whether we like it or not, the Nazi party, before the war were enthusiastically embraced by a good proportion of the German public, particularly the young. You only have to watch old newsreels to realise that the rallies, youth camps endless marching and eventually bullying, tormenting and murdering were all fervently embraced. Not just Germany, but other European countries admired Hitler and emulated him with vigour. The hero worship of one person can and has in the past gone badly wrong and there's nothing to say that it couldn't happen again.

Anniebach Thu 14-Dec-17 15:34:32

Thank you niggly, exactly what I meant

jura2 Thu 14-Dec-17 15:41:25

You post a link video about Nazis - and you say 'stop playing the nazi card' ...? Really.

durhamjen Thu 14-Dec-17 15:50:08

Corbyn has just won a peace prize, yet some people think his followers will act like Nazis? Really?
What peace prize did Hitler win?

whitewave Thu 14-Dec-17 15:55:13

The logic according to “those who know” is that if a political party attracts the enthusiastic young it will become extreme and rotten

What sort of logic is that. confused

jura2 Thu 14-Dec-17 15:59:06

I have to say, when I first came to live in the UK in 1970 and came across groups of very young teenagers marching to screaming orders, in uniform - I was truly shocked to the core. Same when I found that the same happened in many schools, including the manipulation of fire arms.

That really did remind me of youth wings under Hitler and Mussolini.

trisher Thu 14-Dec-17 16:08:25

Still notice Annie chooses not to remember the contribution communism made to fighting Nazis. The Nazis were embraced by many members of the German public and not just the young. But worldwide it was the communists and socialists who led the fight against them, who fought and died in Spain fighting fascism, and who stood with the Jews when the Blackshirts marched in London and many other cities. The British establishment of course actually thought Hitler wasn't such a bad chap to begin with.
If you want to remember history try to do so with some balance.

trisher Thu 14-Dec-17 16:12:20

jura2 that is so interesting when my children were younger I was involved in the Woodcraft Folk, woodcraft.org.uk
We knew an elderly lady who positively hated all forms of militarism and refused to take part in anything which involved uniforms or marching. She was Austrian I think.

Primrose65 Thu 14-Dec-17 16:16:47

I think you need to check your history of WW2 trisher. You'll find Stalin and Hitler had a "territorial and political rearrangement" in 1939. The communists were in collusion with the Nazis for a couple of years. Try searching on 'Stalin pact with Hitler'?

jura2 Thu 14-Dec-17 16:21:45

trisher, I was a girl guide as a child, and both my daughters loved Brownies and guides and so do my grandchildren now.

A massive difference to Army Cadets - which would be totally forbidden now in Germany or Austria- and which are clearly organised to encourage kids, often from inner cities and poor backgrounds- to go into the Army or Navy.

As said, would be illegal in Germany or Austria- exactly because of what is shown in video.

whitewave Thu 14-Dec-17 16:24:17

Remind me- what happened at Stalingrad

Which country lost more people fighting Hitler than every other country put together?

whitewave Thu 14-Dec-17 16:25:05

Remind me - who came back with a piece of paper saying “peace in our time”

trisher Thu 14-Dec-17 16:29:04

In 1939 the British were talking to Hitler as well Primrose65 Try googling the Battle of Stalingrad
But as you probably won't
Battle of Stalingrad, (July 17, 1942–February 2, 1943), successful Soviet defense of the city of Stalingrad (now Volgograd), Russia, U.S.S.R., during World War II. Russians consider it to be one of the greatest battles of their Great Patriotic War, and most historians consider it to be the greatest battle of the entire conflict. It stopped the German advance into the Soviet Union and marked the turning of the tide of war in favour of the Allies.
And if you doubt the sacrifice of life
official Russian military historians estimate that there were 1,100,000 Red Army dead, wounded, missing, or captured in the campaign to defend the city. An estimated 40,000 civilians died as well
And that is just Russia. The communists fighing in Greece, Yugoslavia and many other countries shouldn't be discounted either.
But hey they were communists weren't they and we all know communism is something to be feared don't we?

whitewave Thu 14-Dec-17 16:32:30

Snap trish except I’m too lazy unlike you to give a proper account

Primrose65 Thu 14-Dec-17 16:38:47

But the UK was not signing non-aggression pacts for a cut of Eastern Europe in August 1939 trisher. We didn't say - off you go then, but we want a cut of the spoils.
Hitler attacked Russia in 1941. Until then, Stalin was quite happy with his commission paid by the Nazis.

I don't fear communists at all, especially ones who are living in the UK.

trisher Thu 14-Dec-17 16:43:01

I read the book years ago ww and the memory of it has stayed with me. I am shocked that people don't give proper recognition to the battle and the huge loss of life. I think the history of the war is taught in a very narrow way in Britain. Of course some of the things that happened afterwards raise serious questions about that national hero Churchill.

Primrose65 Thu 14-Dec-17 16:44:23

Much easier to talk about Stalin than Corbyn!

Anniebach Thu 14-Dec-17 16:46:38

Like you fail to keep a balance when discussing unions Trisher.

whitewave Thu 14-Dec-17 16:48:03

trish yes I read a lot about Stalingrad as well. It stays with you doesn’t it? What suffering and bravery.

trisher Thu 14-Dec-17 16:49:21

If you have something constructive to say about Jeremy Corbyn then I would be delighted to discuss him Primrose65 however if it is to be conducted on the basis of the character assassination that has been a feature of many of the posts on GN I will stick to history and why it is so ironic that someone should call someone a communist and then post a video of the Nazis.

whitewave Thu 14-Dec-17 16:54:49

grin you could make it up really
