Why hasn't she been sacked already? She goes in holiday, holds 10 meetings with a range of senior figures, including BN without telling the FO and even worse, suggesting that BJ knew about it in advance. Downing Street says she has been reminded ' of the obligations which exist under the ministerial code ' -oh you mean doing what you want in foreign countries and then lying about it?

Why has May not said or done anything?

This was nearly a year ago, a debate in parliament about Nazanin and Andy Tsege, along with other prisoners in foreign countries.

I don't know whether there are any grounds for her being held - but even if, based on the law there, there are - I don't think the majority of British people would expect, or appreciate, a Foreign Secretary making a statement which has made her situation even more precarious.

I don't think any of us can be sure as to exactly what Nazanin Zaghari was doing in Iran but, whatever it was, I would expect a member of our government to make useful, and hopefully persuasive, representations on behalf of a British citizen rather than cause even more problems.

durhamjen Sun 12-Nov-17 00:23:56

So childish.

Day6 Sat 11-Nov-17 23:43:35

How long have you been following the case, Day6?

What does that matter DJ? That remark is akin to "My Dad is bigger than your Dad"

Why don't you add a 'nee-ner' for emphasis?

You are the expert are you?

For your information I remember the news of her arrest and 'trial' but cannot say I check the story every day. Do any of us? Obviously her case has been highlighted by recent events.

DJ - Do you have no feelings for anyone?

Yet another attack DJ.

You sound as if you are the complete authority regarding what's happened to Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe. I believe her to be innocent and I believe the charges against her are bogus but I cannot say that with complete conviction because I do not know what evidence the Iranians have - if any.

My point is that we should be bringing pressure to bear on the Iranian authorities for their inhuman treatment of Nazanin, but as usual the government bashers are having a field day.

I have little faith that anyone will be able to persuade the Iranian courts to release her. Iran answers to no one.

"They are required to bow to the Speaker when they enter the chamber and to refrain from insulting other members, for instance. "

You don't watch much of the proceedings from Parliament do you JessM.

POGS Sat 11-Nov-17 21:22:51

"wonder if she’ll be allowed to do her RNVR training whilst she’s in office? Probably not a good idea, who knows what forfeits she might bring back with her."

Forces Reservists have to conform to the required duties so why the hell shouldn't she do the same?.

GracesGranMK2 Sat 11-Nov-17 20:30:35

Well said Jess, especially "They are required ... to refrain from insulting other members" Oh that this was a rule on here.

Jalima1108 Sat 11-Nov-17 17:35:53

read my posts properly if you intend replying to them, otherwise just ignore them JessM

lemongrove precisely!!

Nobody wants ministers to spend time in an ashram Jalima1108 - but they do need to be functioning adults. There are a lot of rules (some of them archaic it's true) that apply in the House. They are required to bow to the Speaker when they enter the chamber and to refrain from insulting other members, for instance. There is a serious underlying reason for this - it's the most important room in the country and should be respected at all times, just like our courts are.
This prank is more the sort of thing you'd expect from someone who has not got over adolescence and wants to be accepted by "the lads".

Jalima1108 Sat 11-Nov-17 16:21:30

instead of all the navel-gazing
wink

lemongrove Sat 11-Nov-17 15:39:11

Nothing wrong with a bit of Naval humour, in fact, a bit more humour all round might be a good idea sometimes.wink

maryeliza54 Sat 11-Nov-17 15:31:18

And she didn’t have the judgement to leave it there did she? Oh silly me, expecting a cabinet minister to have judgement - wonder if she’ll be allowed to do her RNVR training whilst she’s in office? Probably not a good idea, who knows what forfeits she might bring back with her.

durhamjen Sat 11-Nov-17 10:10:22

But it didn't stay there. Mordaunt herself brought it into parliament.

Jalima1108 Sat 11-Nov-17 09:39:12

Yes, I remember; however, what happens in the mess/wardroom should stay in the mess/wardroom.

maryeliza54 Sat 11-Nov-17 08:00:37

Jal the reason I mentioned the RN connection was she herself said that the ‘cock speech’ was as a result of losing a bet with RN officer friends,

lemon I used the word ‘smutty’ and in inverted commas as it was exactly the right out of date word to describe the out of date humour she was demonstrating. Sorry the subtlety of that escaped you. I think what she did reflects very badly on her and shows a contempt for Parliament which is not in any way shape or form acceptable. Let’s hope she might be a bit more grown up now but if you look at BJ’s continuing ‘attempts’ at humour you can see why I thought they get on well. You can imagine them giggling and passing notes in Cabinet and TM saying ‘bring that note to me NOW’.

And lemon you must be the only person on the planet that thinks Penny M being an ardent Brexiteer isn’t the main reason she got the job. Alistair Burt was the obvious choice on merit

Morgana Sat 11-Nov-17 01:06:20

I am truly shocked that people seem to think it okay to post things which might be construed as indicating that there was some valid reason why this woman was imprisoned in the first place. Please. Think!
