The Irish question

Some of us would like more than anything to remain in the EU, along with our Irish friends, but if we have to leave then at least we hope to remain in the single market and customs union.

If the extreme brexiteers have their way this will not happen. The Republic of Ireland will keep free movement of people, goods and services with the rest of the EU. We will not keep any of these freedoms, so what will happen at the Irish border?

Sorry, been out all day. Yes, the targeting is awful - re skin tone/shade. I deplore it- but it is the reality- and not just here on the Swiss border, same on the French one, the Italian one, and all over Europe- including at Dover, I can assure you.

I could stand just a few metres from border and guess totally accurately who will be stopped or not. And I can assure you, the racism is not mine, for sure.

I’m surprised that Lemongrove, who is an Irish expert, thinks the Irish problem is “solved”. Many politicians over hundreds of years have thought that.

lemongrove Fri 08-Dec-17 20:45:39

If you choose to be dense suzied that is up to you, but I think you knew that I meant the problem of the Irish border which is what this thread is all about.
Anything for a sarky remark eh?

Jalima1108 Fri 08-Dec-17 20:47:15

Actually, I have found that at any airport I have been through that I am always the one who is stopped and searched. I am White British btw.

In a normal crowd I am nondescript and unnoticeable hmm

Jalima1108 Fri 08-Dec-17 20:48:44

ps I don't have dreadlocks, piercings, tattoos or a white van either!!

lemongrove Fri 08-Dec-17 20:51:27

You must look guilty of something Jalima (or suntanned)

durhamjen Fri 08-Dec-17 20:53:52

I thought it was supposed to be remainers who used insults, lemon.
I think we all know what you mean by dense, and you complain about it regularly.

Jalima1108 Fri 08-Dec-17 20:54:26

Rarely suntanned!

Guilty - possibly hmm
I'm the token white British old woman (in every airport, apparently - 'here she comes, let's nab her).

suzied Fri 08-Dec-17 20:57:42

I think lemongrove said “ the Irish problem is solved”, not “the Irish border question is solved” so that’s me - dense.

durhamjen Fri 08-Dec-17 20:59:45

Can't remember where I read the article about all this fuss over a border that we won't have when we leave the EU.

suzied Fri 08-Dec-17 20:59:56

Though the border question isn’t solved for all time is it?

durhamjen Fri 08-Dec-17 21:01:16

Neither problem has been solved, just shelved for the time being.

lemongrove Fri 08-Dec-17 21:09:18

Oh, the sour grapes on here could be bottled and sold ( at a discount)
Everybody was worried ( so they said) on here, about Ireland, could all this endanger the Good Friday Agreement etc, what would happen, it would all be terrible!
Now that everybody on both sides of the border is happy about what has been proposed, all that some posters can do is moan moan moan.
I really think that a few wanted it all to go horribly wrong,
Wanted T May to bow out and an election called for.
Which they fondly hoped Corbyn would then win, and maybe he would cancel Brexit.Well, that ain’t happening.

suzied Fri 08-Dec-17 21:23:52

Not moaning - Just questioning the motivations. NI stays in the single market just with a slight different wording as a sop to the nationalists. Open borders, what’s not to like. But hey, we’ve already got those? So the proposals are...everything stays the same! hooray! Crack open the champagne. Oops no - English sparking cider! We’ll change the descriptions slightly so Brexiters are happy, but don’t change any thing so much to make remainders happy and let’s spend £ billions to get there. Sorry if I’m not wetting myself with glee unlike the May supporters.

suzied Fri 08-Dec-17 21:38:28

So please tell me, as I am so dense, what is it about the the Irish border proposals that we should be so delighted about? Is it just that it is staying the same as it is now?

durhamjen Fri 08-Dec-17 21:49:14

Nothing is agreed until everything is agreed, so nobody knows, not even lemon.

Tegan2 Fri 08-Dec-17 23:16:04

This isn't the beginning of the end but the end of the beginning.

whitewave Sat 09-Dec-17 07:01:01

That’s very Churchilian tegan grin

whitewave Sat 09-Dec-17 07:01:48

Were you smoking a cigar when you posted?

suzied Sat 09-Dec-17 07:15:00

I think May takes the Neville Chamberlain role - being congratulated for solving the “problem”.

whitewave Sat 09-Dec-17 07:44:48

I think you are right suzied

“Peace until after Christmas” grin

Mind you if she is still around then - the loons are beyond fury. Just look at the Leave Facebook page. So perhaps they will stage a coup. Gove seems to be lining up.

lemongrove Sat 09-Dec-17 10:09:35

There won’t be a coup ww .....such wishful thinking on your part.
Just be happy that there will be a deal with the EU and no
Walking away.Brexit seems to be more of a reality now, and there will be no Armageddon as many Remainers thought.

whitewave Sat 09-Dec-17 10:14:11

Why on earth would I wish for a coup by the loons? It is bad enough what this poor country is suffering at the moment, especially if you are one of the millions of childr3n described in the House of Commons last week. How can the Tories live with themselves?

jura2 Sun 10-Dec-17 08:17:11

Now what will happen to Gibraltar- no-one is talking about this one.

jura2 Sun 10-Dec-17 08:28:45

Talking about Churchill- he had no qualm with crossing the floor to the Liberals when he felt the Cons were inadequate- if only those who strongly believe we are on the wrong road, be they from Labour or the Cons - would do the same again.
