Has the Conservative Party lost all sense of competence

This is not an attack on individuals but on the ethos of conservatism. Since the war the CP has created the myth that they are competent. Recently we have seen:

Incompetence with the economy.
Incompetence with benefits
Incompetence with state pensions
Incompetence with support for business and industry via infrastructure
Incompetence in many areas with government administration
Incompetence with transport
Incompetence in the criminal justice system
Incompetence in defence
Incompetence in education
Incompetence in the NHS
Incompetence in running their own election

I am sure there are other areas. Why does anyone vote for this incompetence? Surely we deserve better?

Shuffle’ is an old English word defined as ‘to walk slowly without lifting the feet’.

Nice non sequiter there, Jalima

Does the 'new' cabinet represent you?

This morning on Radio 4 I was unlucky enough to adult my ears by listening to Grayling. The questions concerned the chaos in the rail network and in particular in the south of the country. Grayling has received a report from the NAO.

Grayling repeated over and over again that the chaos was entirely the fault of the unions.

I have just been watching local lunch time news which reported from the NAO report which remember Grayling has read.

The fault the NAO said was laid both primarily with the franchisee but also at the bad handling by Grayling.

Clearly the new ministerial behaviour insisted on by Maybot does not include LYING.

ps disliking Corbyn and McDonnell and being suspicious of Momentum does not mean other posters being positive about the Tories - not everything is in shades of black or white.

Do you mean like this MaizieD?

From twitter (I love twitter grin)

Theresa May said her cabinet reshuffle makes the government look ‘more like the country it serves’.

The new cabinet is 96% white, 74% male, 60% went to Oxbridge and the average age is 50.

And what country would that be?

Cloud Cuckoo Land has been suggested...

Isn't it funny that the only way anyone can express opposition to the things posted on here is not by denying them or posting positive comments about the Gov, the Conservatives or Theresa. but by trying to derail the thread with comments about something else entirely. Makes you think everyone is deserting them!

Jalima1108 Wed 10-Jan-18 10:36:08

Revisiting a rebellious youth perhaps easybee? Epitomised in a crusty old-time rebel - I am surprised at the approbation for a foul misogynist though, or at least the lack of condemnation.

This from the above article:

A question: do the Tories meaningfully exist any more beyond Westminster and the closed circles of power and influence highlighted by the Toby Young fiasco? Corporate donations and hired help might just about get them through election campaigns. But while Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour party can justifiably claim to be a mass movement, the Conservatives have not released any membership figures since 2013, and are reckoned to have as few as 70,000 members. According to recent polling, 71% of Conservative members are men and 44% are 65 or over. More than half of card-carrying Tories still support the death penalty; three-quarters agree that “young people don’t have enough respect for traditional British values”. The grassroots may have liked Priti Patel’s claim this week that they are “the beating heart of our movement”, but that may well be part of the problem.

GracesGranMK2 Wed 10-Jan-18 10:28:54

Going back to the article. Could it be this one? Theresa May can rally her troops, but the Tory party is dying on its feet or was there another one yesterday?

eazybee Wed 10-Jan-18 10:25:14

I am looking forward to the appearance of a petition to remove John McDonnell following the unpleasant remarks and threats he made about Esther McVey. But I won't hold my breath.
Jeremy Corbyn supporters have apparently renewed a vicious hate campaign against her. What a surprise.

What fuels the constantly reiterated, unbalanced venom and bile expressed on here by a, fortunately, very few members?
Obviously, instructions from Party Headquarters.

As even 'young fresh-faced PMs' have 're-shuffles' then the quote from Huffpost is a bit meaningless really.

GracesGranMK2 Wed 10-Jan-18 10:17:20

I think there is a lot of truth in what you say whitewave. My sadness is seeing the older people who are so very anti the young.

I wonder where this would take 'party' politics. My feeling is that the Tories have recognised that more must be done at grass roots level - although I doubt it will offset what people see them doing in parliament.

(if anyone has the link to the article I would be grateful for a repeat).

whitewave Wed 10-Jan-18 10:00:54

The word is that they are dying on their feet.

Brexit is beginning to be seen as the last battle of the old guard and that they are now in no position to fight another great battle on this sort of scale. They have neither the troops nor the solidarity to do so. The cabinet continues to exist of the very types that the under 50s are rejecting. I.e. 34% public school educated. Few if any from a working class back ground, and a large % of multi millionaires.

Interesting article in the Independent which I think someone put up on a thread. The democratic process of encouraging people from all background and faith to come together as a community to deal with issues at root level. I think it may well have legs. There is certainly the enthusiasm and knowledge to do so. It would certainly bring a level of democracy to the U.K. not seen for some time.

From "The Waugh Zone" in the Huffpost.

Shuffle’ is an old English word defined as ‘to walk slowly without lifting the feet’. As she squares up to Jeremy Corbyn for PMQs, Theresa May’s task is to show how her re-shuffle is not a sign of a doddery Government but a fresh-faced reflection of modern Britain.

Is the Tory Party really becoming the party of old people for those with old people views?

Letter in guardian.

“Number of departments renamed: 2
Number of new party vice-chairman appointed : 9
Number of underperforming secretaries of state sacked: 0
Number of real world problems resolved: no chance.”

Channel 4

Reshuffle kerfuffle grin

Harassing, bullying or inappropriate behaviour will not be tolerated.
All ministers must sign up this -

I can’t possibly think why.

durhamjen Tue 09-Jan-18 18:06:07

He'll have to alter it again, as he said the universities Jo Johnson, and he's been sacked from that position now.
He already has two paragraphs on the OfS.

durhamjen Tue 09-Jan-18 18:03:53

Ah but...he's got rid of 40,000 of the ones he didn't mean. That makes him a reformed character!

Have you seen his wikipaedia page?
It says he has altered it over 280 yimes by 2018, which is pretty good considering it's an autobiography.

whitewave Tue 09-Jan-18 17:59:36

Love the way Young supporters are moaning on about the grief from twitter.

They are completely forgetting the foul and unpleasant tweets etc Young has dished out in the past.

What that about heat and kitchen?

durhamjen Tue 09-Jan-18 17:49:25

Raab also voted against making housing fit for people to live in. Amazing what you need to do to be made housing minister in this government.

durhamjen Tue 09-Jan-18 17:13:48

Dominic Raab's history doesn't bode well either.

www.24housing.co.uk/news/dominic-raab-the-doubt-of-the-benefit/

Sad that May can't find anyone better than these two.

durhamjen Tue 09-Jan-18 16:43:27

Wasn't she the one who said it's good that there are more people using foodbanks? That's why she lost her seat in Liverpool, before being shoehorned into Tatton when Osborne left. She was IDS second in command.
Doesn't bode well.

I see Jo Johnson has been moved from universities and put in transport under Grayling.
He kept defending Young even after he had resigned. He should have known better when posts were still being decided.

whitewave Tue 09-Jan-18 16:16:56

Some of her comments about the sick and poor in the past have been nasty and disgusting.

durhamjen Tue 09-Jan-18 16:11:27

www.24housing.co.uk/news/research-reveals-true-impact-of-universal-credit-on-the-rental-market/

I can't see Esther McVey being more understanding than Gauke on universal credit. Fairy godmother and pantomime season are over.
