Have we always had so many messages?

I like the fact that the Queen makes a speech at Christmas - mainly because we don't hear from her very often but May has given us a "Christmas message" and now we are going to get a New Year one too. Couldn't the politicians just shut up over the holidays?

Well said Chewbacca, & so sorry to read of your sadness . Hopefully as posters we will all think a bit harder about the affect our opinions may have on others, myself included. I am sure it's partially to do with being anonymous ( as per the thread I started)

Perhaps I should explain why I feel that the comment "She (May) has no one else to read bedtime stories to", is so abhorrent to me. We have no idea whether TM wanted children and couldn't, because of her serious health problems. But having personal experience of childlessness, and the huge, all encompassing sadness that it brings, I know the yearning of wanting a child to read a story to. And it would have broken my heart to read that someone was using that loss to score a cheap political point. But no matter what; it seems a low blow, to me, to correlate the woman's politics with her having no children to read a bedtime story to. I just cannot see what her personal life/tragedies, has to do with what she has done politically.

You're not wrong Granny23

I have read bedtime stories to my own children, DGC, Niece, nephew, and their children, other people's children when I've been babysitting and a whole class in a Nursery. That may be why I did not see anything wrong with the remark about Mrs T. I read it as indicating that she had no close friends or family to listen to her so had to share her thoughts with the rest of us.

Silly me, to miss the 'lowest, bitchiest comment' ever, as yet again what might have been an interesting GN thread turns into the same old, same old series of personal attacks on other posters.

lemongrove Wed 03-Jan-18 18:29:34

I rarely listen to official messages ( from anybody) but may do from a PM.

lemongrove Wed 03-Jan-18 18:27:51

Yes, hardly a ‘political’ post was it durhamjen?

Chewbacca Wed 03-Jan-18 18:23:44

You're absolutely right Ourkid; the comment about May having no one to read a bedtime story to was about the lowest and bitchiest comment I've seen on GN yet. I'm assuming that the author of that comment was a woman, which makes the comment even more abhorrent. Comments like that having nothing to with politics, news or debate. But they say volumes about the mentality of the poster.

durhamjen Wed 03-Jan-18 17:52:32

Of course it's in my view, by the way.
You don't have any political views, do you?

durhamjen Wed 03-Jan-18 17:51:26

Are you stalking me, lemon?

lemongrove Wed 03-Jan-18 17:49:39

In your view dj
And yes ourkid1 it was a very mean spirited thing to say I fully agree with you on that.

durhamjen Wed 03-Jan-18 17:32:21

She could read bedtime stories to her husband, but as he is her soulmate and agrees with everything she says, it wouldn't be a story, would it?
Her speeches are bedtime stories, as they are all fantasy. She tells lies about what she is going to do to help the whole country, then does the opposite.

OurKid1 Wed 03-Jan-18 15:05:29

Although I guess that anniebach and I are poles apart in our political views, I find myself agreeing with her again (that's twice since Christmas!). There is no need to say that May has "nobody else to read bedtime stories to*, then say that it was just a statement of fact. Saying "she doesn't have children" is a statement of fact. "Nobody else to read ..." etc comes over as mean-spirited to say the least. I fail to see the connection between the OPosters question and having children anyway.
Btw, no I don't think we have (had so many Christmas messages), but then I ignore them if I can.

In 2015 Corbyn did not give a Christmas message and was fiercely criticised for it in the MSM.

lemongrove Mon 01-Jan-18 19:50:32

I don’t know why anyone bothers to listen to Christmas messages anyway.

lemongrove Mon 01-Jan-18 19:49:16

Have you? GracesGranM2

Jalima1108 Mon 01-Jan-18 19:47:02

They probably write the stuff in October and are only required if there is a major incident over the holiday that has to be hastily added.
Like Jools Holland's Hootenanny, recorded well in advance and I always think - what if a disaster befalls the main participants?
Just to be cheery.

Jalima1108 Mon 01-Jan-18 19:44:38

They always seem to pass me by, although I did listen to HM this year as she was on as we sat down for after lunch (dinner?) coffee.

GracesGranMK2 Mon 01-Jan-18 18:47:04

Have you been one of the people to go on the 'anonymity' thread and declare you are never rude POGS?

POGS Mon 01-Jan-18 16:17:38

Thread title

Have we always had so many messages?

Yes . All Parties of any co!our in Government and Shadow Government have done so, other political parties and Devolved Government Leaders , they will continue to do so until Xmas is banned.

Elegran

" There is no need to watch, listen to or read all these messages."

I agree , if that makes me perceive other people intentions in an extreme manner or telling us others to stop getting het up then I am happy to share your company.

And May will have to do a lot of travelling in the EU as her speeches are always named after the city in which she makes them.
Where is she going in January?
Do you think she will list all the utilities the Chinese own in her Chinese New Year speech in February? To show us how well we are doing in trading with China?

trisher Sun 31-Dec-17 11:54:30

They probably write the stuff in October and are only required if there is a major incident over the holiday that has to be hastily added. It's not as if they have a lot of other stuff to do. As Brexit chaos develops watch out for a Chinese New Year Speech, an Easter Speech, a summer break speech, the possibilities are endless...

durhamjen Sun 31-Dec-17 11:50:18

"But we are being held back by a self-serving elite, who look after themselves and their friends and a failed system which delivers staggering wealth at the top, while more and more people struggle to simply make ends meet."

From Corbyn's speech. I
What's not to agree with in this?

durhamjen Sun 31-Dec-17 11:35:52

Trisher, are the speechwriters not allowed time off between Christmas and New year?

durhamjen Sun 31-Dec-17 11:34:43

This is a much more important Christmas message.
