Yes, i read that Congress had discussed the nuclear code issue and that the head of the armed services would not obey a call to 'press the button' if it was deemed to be ' illegal ' (whatever that means.) I think this is unprecedented. In the past the have obeyed without question.

fluttERBY123. Let's hope so. I was reading an explanation of the system. He has a card on him with codes (rather than a button) and has to take advice from the military but does not have to follow it. If the people around him have any sense they will have replaced the card and given him a toy one in its place.

I think if Trump did have finger poised on button the military would send in men in white coats and do the explaining later.

quizqueen It is nothing to do with him being white - although I do wonder if Obama would have such extreme responses if he had been white. He is either a saint or the devil to most people. It was obviously difficult with a Democrat President and a Republican President - but he seems to have made a lot of serious mistakes - the excessive use of drones, imprisoning whistleblowers, lack of prison reform etc. and the positives seem to be more along the lines of him being charismatic and able to speak intelligently which are a bit nebulous.
Trump isn't standing up to North Korea, he is poking it with a stock. South Korea is very unhappy with Trump's handling of the situation. His own companies make their goods overseas. The people his policies have caused to be expelled from the country are not undesirables but the easy targets. Don't forget his pardoning of that appalling Sheriff.
People take a black and white view of both parties as they do here about Brexit - but ignoring that his speech has changed more than can just be put down to age is not helpful if you are arguing in support of him. He rambles and loses track of his sentences. People around him have tried to deal with it by writing things down but he gets bored when he has to read things.
He will probably be tempered later this year when there are bound to be more Democratic wins and hopefully the balance in the 2 Houses will change.

If Mr Trump was black, none of you would dare say any of the things you write about him on here but, instead, he just happens to have a personality which most of you don't seem to like. I expect he speaks highly of all you lot too!!!!
He's trying to do the best he can for his country which is why the voters chose him. He's standing up to the bully in North Korea, he's trying to get rid of undesirables in his country and prevent more from coming in and trying to improve the economy of the US by prioritising buying from the home economy. What's not to like!!!

I sympathise with the choice that Americans had in the last election. It was the not voters who made the difference and although I strongly believe in voting, I would have found it difficult to vote for Hillary.
The Democrats should be using the shock of Trump to put their own house in order but instead they are pointing fingers at Russia and banging on about winning the popular vote (which just means that they won California and New York as if the rest of the Country doesn't matter).
I think Trump is awful (the worst is the nepotism and money making by Kushner and the daughter-wife, a look at their financial arrangements is an eye opener), but I can understand why he won.
Much of the harm he is doing will be reversible but his supreme court appointments will be causing damage for years. He will have a way to go to beat Clinton's repeal of the Glas Steagal Act in causing harm though.
The US has long had a choice between bad or worse although there is a glimmer of home in some of the new Democrats coming through. It is ironic that one of their best was elected in Alabama - but following that result 13 states brought in laws making it more difficult for African Americans to vote and the ability to gerrymander in the US is horrendous.
They have a long way to go to improve things. I hope he does not get in again (I would be surprised if he wanted to stand again) but the whole system is very dysfunctional. Trump just seems to be to be a symptom of that dysfunction.

Radicalnan are you a Trump supporter? It's very difficult not to comment on him when he is so powerful and yet makes such outrageous (and frankly, childish) statements. What worries me (being in the UK and not the US) is the likelihood of him starting a nuclear war in which case we are all doomed.

He seems a narcissist ( I know it's an armchair diagnosis). He needs constant praise and adulation, but can't listen to anyone else's views about the world.

Never a day goes by one here without someone assessing him as a sociopath, they are quite common among the population and high functioning at times and can be very successful. How do we think Hilary is mentally then?

Petra, my understanding is that he provided a private fitness evaluation, and refused the normal evaluation. The medical on next Friday will be the first time the Whitehouse medical staff have had the opportunity to do anything formal.

Yes, nothing he's done will have kicked in yet and the recovery has been steady and is forecast to continue that way - unless Trump takes steps to increase the growth rate too quickly, which is what he's promised to do.

The economy etc was on the up before he took over the presidency. He's simply claiming the successes brought about by the previous administration. The same way he claimed that through him there had been no aircraft lost of life in 2017 failing to mention that there hadn't been for the previous few years either.

The US economy is looking healthy and at present it's what's called a Goldilocks economy - everything is just about right. But there's a couple of things that aren't being said. The first thing is that if President Trump keeps his promise of increasing economic growth to 4%, that could create a boom that leads to a damaging bust. The cynic in me thinks about a lot of rich people making a lot of money in the short term leaving everyone else to pay the price later.

The second thing is the rate of unemployment, which is stable at around 4% and well below the target. This is the official unemployment rate (U-3). But a lot of workers have taken part-time jobs whilst looking for full-time work. Also, most job growth is in low-priced sectors and some people have been out of work for so long that they'll never be able to return to the high-paying jobs they used to have. This means there's an increase in structural unemployment which is where there's a mismatch between the jobs available and the skill levels of the unemployed. The Chairperson of the Federal Reserve has said the more accurate unemployment rate is the real unemployment rate (U-6) and it is double the official unemployment rate U-3. Apparently this situation is unique to this period of recovery in American history.

I agree Fennel. I don't like his public persona one bit. But he seems to be lasting a lot longer than many people thought. The Dow is at an all-time high, North & South Korea are talking for the first time in ages - if this was Obama, we'd all be singing his praises.
