West Coast is run by Virgin Trains, of which Branson owns 51% and Stagecoach owns 49%. I doubt if he had anything to do with the decision; it appears to be quite local and not even apply to his other franchises (I haven't seen them named as participating in the ban) I suspect both an earlier poster and I were confusing the West & East Coast lines. Virgin has only a 10% stake in the latter.

I am related by marriage to a family of DM readers. I have heard them say "It tells it as it is".

It is like their bible - they have always read it and their political views have never changed, unless you count becoming more entrenched. They can quote many headlines years after their publication, and if it is pointed out them that some of it is pure lies, even with proof to back that up, they simply refuse to believe it, because they want it to be true. It seems to make them feel superior.

I stress that I am not describing all Mail readers here, just a group that I know well.

I'm sorry I've not yet got any answers from the Daily Mail readers on GN.

I am genuinely curious as to why anyone would read the DM. I don't just mean read it occasionaly - I have done that. I mean read it regularly and agree with its political stance.

Did your parents read the DM? How long have you been reading it? Do you generally agree with the opinions expressed there? How many other newspapers have you read and why do you continue to read the Daily Mail??

So why are some posters on other threads getting so exercised about Branson and Virgin trains if he only has a 'tiny share'?

I would like to ask those who always buy the Daily Mail, "Why?"

Is it because it is light reading? Perhaps you like the reports on fashion? celebs? sport? tv? or is it because you agree with their political views?

If that is so I would like to know - how long have you been reading the DM? Have you ever had different political views? Do you think that your political views have been influenced - or even formed by the views of the Daily Mail?

I am asking this as a genuine question. The surveys after the EU referendum found that newspaper readership was one of the most significant determinants of voting pattern in the referendum.

The Daily Mail (and the Express and the Sun) told their readers in no uncertain terms that they should vote to Leave the EU and most of them did.

Jeremy Corbyn WILL let trains sell the Daily Mail once he renationalises the railways, his official spokesman declared today.

I am annoyed because they do not stock The Express and Star.

I can't recall ever buying a paper on a train. I buy one before I get on the train.
By the way, legs55, the i costs 60p, and has sudoku and crosswords enough for most train journeys.

Strange but the DM runs out first in my shop. I suppose the anti brigade on here thinks they are better than those who purchase it. That's what comes across. The reason it is read widely is probably because the majority of the population agree with it.

They are not allowed to have their opinion though because it does not agree with yours.

Branson has only a tiny share in the West coast line. He's not dictating what you can read on not his trains. They're just not selling the Daily Mail any more.

I feel tempted to offer you the usual Leavers' retort: Suck it up...

Richard Branson is also a strong supporter for remaining in Europe, while The D M has led a strong campaign for Brexit.

But surely Sir Richard wouldn't be influenced by this, would he?

I certainly won't be allowing Mr Branson to dictate what I read if I have the misfortune to be travelling on one of his trains. I will make sure I buy the Daily Mail before alighting and then openly flaunt it as I read it. The man is despicable. He one of the biggest remoaners out but chooses to be a tax exile so as to avoid contributing to this country's services and his Virgin headquarters are not even based in a EU country ( Switzerland) to reduce his tax bill even more. The man cares about nothing but his bank balance and I avoid using his companies wherever possible.

varian I consider your comments offensive regarding the newspapers sold in Lidl, not a shop I use as I prefer other Supermarkets. I read the Express now, I used to read the Independent but even before it went on-line only it was becoming very expensive, DH read the Sun (I also glanced at it)

I swapped to the Express on cost grounds but I enjoy doing the crosswords & sudoku, if I don't like what's printed I don't read itBecause I read a newspaper doesn't mean I agree with what's written or the Political leanings

For once, or maybe twice(!) I agree with Nigel Farage. Just because somebody doesn't agree with something doesn't mean it is wrong or should be "banned". How narrow minded of Virgin staff. We need all sorts of views to make the world go round, harmoniously.

Pure censorship on RB's part as the DM criticised his trainset and doesn't support the Remain campaign. I hope the DM points this out but since their print and online readership is 29 million a month they are not going to miss a few copies sold on trains.
